@L – When you write something as a reporter, even a blogger, you need to cite your sources. Since David first saw it on Rich’s site, not in an e-mail to retailers (David isn’t, as far as I know, a retailer), he cites THEM so that if the information is wrong people know where he got it and that he’s not just making it up–and if it’s right, credit where credit’s due to the person who informed David. Which is good, since the person who informed David is obviously reading David’s work.

By “reporting”, you mean they received the same email all retailers got from DC regarding the rings? You make it sound like he did some work regarding it. Most knew about this the day before, too. It should say ‘reposted’ instead.

Personally, I’ll pay $3-4 for each of those issues to get the respective ring. A lot of them I was alredy planning on reading and some others I wasn’t (Outsiders, JLA, and Adventure).

Flight rings. (Actual flight not included.) I’d go for that. When they relaunch Legion as a monthly in about a year after being the Adventure backup, I could see that.

25 copies of Outsiders gets you 50 rings. If there is demand for the rings, give them away with every purchase of Outsiders, and you increase demand for Outsiders. It is DC’s hope that some of those readers will be so enamoured with the comic they will pick up the next issue to see what happens next. Either way, the retailer does not lose out, sells more comics and gets a bunch more rings to use to incentivise purchase.

I’d love for them to do a promotion like this with a Legion ring! I need one for my Booster Gold Halloween costume and am unwilling/unable to pay the exorbitant eBay prices for the ones that exist now.

I’ll say what I said over at BleedingCool.com. If this does well, they should do it with all the different Green Lantern rings, then work their way to the Flash rings and Legion rings.

@Rich: That last point was my thoughts on the situation, but rereading it (and your comment) I see something was lost in translation and it looked like I was attributing it to you. Sorry for any confusion!

Since we’re talking about it, what I meant by it possibly hurting in the long run was the fact that if a smaller shop wants to give away Star Sapphire rings but doesn’t have enough of a fan base to buy 50 copies of Outsiders, they might get a few extra sales in the short term, but they might lose money in the longer term based on overordering.

I don’t think I said anything about hurting anyone. Just that they’ll probably give the rings away with a purchase of the comic. In fact it will probably help most, by increasing sales on lower-selling titles.
