Via this Lionsgate press release, Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the Mark Millar/John Romita, Jr. action/comedy comic of the same name has finally found a home. It was turned down from studio to studio until a deal was struck with Lionsgate. There was a certain amount of buzz from the footage shown at this year’s SDCC and there’s uncertainty exactly when it will be released in 2010, but consider me pumped and thankful it’s finally going to come out.
Kick-Ass is about an average comic fanboy that one day decides to fight injustice. The catch? He has no superpowers. He meets an eclectic cast of characters along the way. It’s gritty, violent, but oh-so funny.

No surprize that LionsGate would win out in the end. They have a long history of controversal films. Though given recent failuers like The Spirt & Punisher: War Zone I wonder if they had second thoughts?

I hope this comes out January 2010… I don’t want to wait any longer!

I don’t think this story is entirely accurate. The script was turned down from studio to studio, but the movie itself sparked a bidding war upon creation independently. At least, that’s how I was known to understand it.

Am I the only person than enjoyed Punisher: War Zone? Oh fanboyish is such a curse

Ironically, this may mean that my dad will see it. He pretty much rents the entire Lionsgate catalog as it is. The previews for this in SD were amazing!

I too like the Warzone movie.

No Atreyu I thoroughly enjoyed Punisher: War Zone. Fanboys are never satisfied, that’s why we append ‘boys’ to the end of their title. They’re like children, easily exictable but never happy with what they have. Or they prejudge things before experiencing them. Thankfully I’ve seen none of that for this film. No fanboys, just fans.
And Blithe you’re correct, the SCRIPT was turned down repeatedly but the final movie had a lot of people eyeing it even if they didn’t put bids in. More studios would have bid but a few didn’t feel it would be good for their image. Just because I WANT that steak that looks oh so amazing, doesn’t mean i can finish it, you know.

You are not alone Atreyu, you are not alone.
Peace.

No! Better make it January 2011 so it won’t come out before the first comic arc is finished.

The first arc, specifically #8, is 10 pages away from the finish line.

I saw several clips of this at SDCC last month, and the crowd went WILD. Which is almost an understatement. I know almost next to nothing about the comic book KICK-ASS — even though I’m an admirer of the works of both Millar and Romita Jr. — but the teaser clips they showed have definitely piqued my interest. I will definitely go out and see this movie!
