Will Robert Pattinson’s Shaft sparkle?

Youngblood might be getting a little bit more sparkly. MTV spoke with director Brett Ratner on who he’d like to be in his movie — the answer may surprise you. Or sicken you.

“Definitely [Robert Pattinson] from ‘Twilight,’” Ratner told MTV News when asked if he has his eye on any potential “Youngblood” actors at this point. “He just feels like he belongs in that world. I don’t only see him as a vampire, he’s a really good actor.”

Okay, that isn’t an unfair statement to make, about his acting chops (although, admittedly I wouldn’t know, not having seen Twilight). But the character that Pattinson would most likely play? The leader of the Youngbloods, a certain redheaded archer named Shaft:

(And no, for those just joining us, this guy has nothing to do with Richard Roundtree or Samuel L. Jackson.) What do you think? Do you see a resemblance here? Or is Brett just joining the Twilight bandwagon a little too late? Sound off!

I don’t know yet if this is the stupidest idea or the most brilliant. Ratner wants to shun the Youngblood fans out there, but bring in 14 year-old girls (or those with the mentality of one).

The “myth” that twilight fans are all 14 years old girls, is just that, a myth. I’m a 37 year old mother, who doesn’t have the mentality of a 14 year old.

  3. Katrina Says:

I agree with Michelle, I’m 40 and love RP. So do most of my co-workers. Great Idea RP as shaft. I hope Brett signs Rob up before someone else does. He seems to be very busy these days. He is in demand and not just by 14 year olds.

Michelle is right; people with terrible taste of all ages can enjoy “Twilight.” Actually, it’s kind of brilliant. Take the star of a successful adaptation of one of the most vacuous, over-rated books ever, and insert him into the film adapation of one of the most vacuous comics ever. It’s perfect. The only question: will Yellow Hat now harass Pattison too?

  5. Weeji Says:

I haven’t seen Twilight, but if the guy can act, then why not? Best of both worlds, early 90′s comic book fans and women?

  6. michelle Says:

    Hey Brad,
Why is it that I have terrible taste if I like Twilight? Can’t it just be that you disagree and not be some character flaw on my end? Have a great day, btw!

Dude’s dreamy, no two ways about it. Thanks for that headline- you made my immature snickering Friday. :)

Wow. A Liefield comic movie, with Ratner directing, and Pattinson starring. It’s like the perfect storm of suckiness.

  10. Alexa Says:

I don’t care for Twilight and I love RPattz because he’s hilarious when he talks about Twilight– he loathes it so!

  11. Deco Says:

whatever – beetlejuice could NEVER be batman; an australian song-and-dance dandy could NEVER be logan; a gay cowboy as the joker? NEVER… etc. yawn. Why would Youngblood actually be an interesting movie again?

  12. Sarah Jaffe Says:

This is indeed the best post title ever. That said, commenters, I’m a 29-year-old journalist and comic fan with multiple advanced degrees, and I both enjoy Twilight and Robert Pattinson. So can we lay off the condescension?

  13. Russ Burlingame Says:

No. We can’t. It’s in our DNA as pop-culture junky loudmouths.

  14. Vaneta Rogers Says:

I don’t think Robert Pattinson would take this kind of role, but you never know. He leans more toward artsy films, like his portrayal last year of artist Salvador Dali. That said, his role opposite Hugh Jackman in next year’s Unbound Captives is fairly high profile, although a small part. Still, I just don’t see it either way – it doesn’t seem like the kind of role Rob needs, nor the kind of actor the part needs. But like Deco pointed out, we’ve all been wrong before.

Oh, and for the record I’m a 43-year-old fan of comics and Twilight, and yes, when it comes to my fandom and entertainment choices, I do have the mentality of a 14-year-old, and I hope to keep it the rest of my life.

Despite the myth that comics are for kids, people of all ages read comics. And despite the myth that Twilight books are for kids, people of all ages read and love them.
