Hey wait a minute! I thought Marvel characters weren’t allowed to smoke anymore?

August 7th, 2009

And yet here’s Steve “Captain America” Rogers smoking a pipe while ironically telling his pal Bucky that they should enjoy some fresh air. Sure, the panel is from a story in 1944′s All Winners Comics #12, but Marvel just republished it on Wednesday, as a back-up All Winners Comics 70th Anniversary Special #1. Aren’t they concerned about the tens of thousands—well, thousands anyway—of the impressionable 35- to 60-year-old readers who pick the book up are going to see their idol Cap smoking a pipe and take up pipe-smoking just to emulate him?

Considering that belt is tight around his ribs, Steve probably can’t inhale anyway.

    Re: fun fact: Awesome!

  3. Kerry Callen Says:

They should have simply changed the smoke to bubbles.

  4. Russ Burlingame Says:

I think not enough superheroes smoke pipes anymore.

  5. jefped Says:

Not enough actual PEOPLE smoke pipes any more. I have a pipe and it’s a joy to smoke. There are so many great aromatic tobaccos to choose from.

Cigarette addiction is a tragedy for so many people. However, allowing it in comics influences no one (do we go out and attack people as a result of superhero battles?).

I don’t mind seeing it in movies or comics. (It’s a lot better than smelling it!)

  7. Ian Says:

Huh, I didn’t know it was still 2002. Guess this stupid issue will never die.

  8. Steve Says:

You’re overlooking the most obvious of ironies, here…

“Hey. Bucky. Let’s enjoy this fresh air. While I blow smoke in yer face.”

    “Okie dokie hunky dorky, Steve@!@”

Almost every month Marvel releases reprints some comics from the past where people smoke in comics. Especially the Marvel Masterworks Hard Covers and Trade Paperbacks.

This is nothing new. This is not an interesting blog post. Somebody needs to take a class on effective blogging.

  10. Russ Burlingame Says:

There’s a big difference between hardcover anthologies that run $30 or more, and a mainstream, floppy release intended to be bought by new and casual readers.

This is the very best comment I’ve ever received on Blog@. I’m going to print this out and hang it on my refrigerator so I can be reminded that I need to go back to school and get my masters in Effective Blogging every time I open it to get a drink.

This short article cracked me up. It’s the reason I left my earlier (admittedly lame)comment. Didn’t truly consider the post about smoking. It was more about the humor.

And we must all agree humor’s a subjective thing…

  13. Doogalis Says:

Welllllll, I guess I had my sense of humor turned off for that one. I failed to notice it as a bit of whimsy. I usually look to ‘rama for news. Particularly the blogs. I live and breathe sequential art storytelling. I got thrown by the “blog as entertainment” aspect of it. It was a slow news day after all. I apologize for my earlier inappropriate snarky comment.

i wish people would stop acting like quesada did something stupid by banning people from smoking in marvel books…

“i wish people would stop acting like quesada did something stupid by banning people from smoking in marvel books…”

Good point… It wasn’t nearly as stupid as making a deal with the devil to break up a perfectly good, committed marriage.

  16. whothewhatthe Says:

Well, fanboy d, the problem is that it was stupid. What? Nobody in a fictional universe smokes? Since we’re so concerned with showing everyone living a politically correct healthy lifestyle, let’s ban them from being shown eating fatty foods while we’re at it. In fact, no more overweight characters whatsoever and alcohol should not even exist in the Marvel U. Get a grip…..
