This just in from Ain’t It Cool News — after Metal Men, Dan DiDio’s going for the monthly gold!
The man behind the Metal Men is moving to an all-new, all-different monthly series later this year, AICN reported. Here’s the quote:
Yeah, I’ll give you a scoop. I’ll give you a spoiler. You know what, I had so much fun writing METAL MEN that I’m actually going to be taking over a monthly title coming up at the end of the year.
The head honcho of DC editorial has been working with Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez on the current Wednesday Comics Metal Men feature — could this be another crack at the Alloy-able Avengers?
Despite my initial thoughts to the contrary, probably not, as they are currently the back-up for the new Doom Patrol series — as reader David Uzumeri notes below, this likely means that DiDio is taking over a different monthly feature, instead, just referencing Metal Men as the impetus — after all, he did get his start at DC writing Superboy. Thoughts?

I don’t think that quote necessarily means the monthly title is Metal Men, though. He mentions that the fun he’s having with Metal Men is why he’s continuing writing, but the quote could easily mean that he’s taking over Teen Titans or Jonah Hex or anything.

I like his work so far on Metal Men. He’s been among the few who are really mastering the pacing needed to write a weekly one-page comic.
And I liked his editing on Teen Titans. I think that he does have skills. They just aren’t enough when his vision for all of DC is so opposite mine. But in smaller chunks, he seems to be very capable indeed.

Why not write a monthly? It’s not like he’s been doing anything important at DC recently.
ZING!

Well, at least we know the Titans are safe from a more direct exposure to Didio’s death scythe, as DC’s announced new writers for those books very recently.
For some reason, the first book that comes to my mind is Booster Gold…

Based upon this Metal Men strip in Wednesday Comics and his issues of Superboy, there’s nothing to suggest Didio is a good writer. In fact, quite the opposite can be implied.

Did Didio write the era of Superboy after Joe Kelly left when Superboy was a superintendent of a slum apartment building? Those were dark days for the series…

I’m sure we’ll find out what title he’s giving himself in the next 20Q, but it’ll sure be fun to speculate before then. I’m betting it’ll either be one of the secondary Gotham City titles, like Red Robin, Sirens, or the Outsiders, or something like Adventure Comics or Magog.

I would LOVE to see Dan Didio write SEVERAL DC titles*
*and hand over the reigns as editor in chief to Mark Chiarello, the GENIUS behind Wednesday Comics. All of the projects he’s worked on (e.g., Wednesday Comics, the Batman Black & White series/volumes) have been of high creative quality and innovative in presentation…. I’d rather see DC put out 10 high-quality products a month than 80+ titles with endless fill-ins by anonymous-y artists, who sometimes are such an afterthought that different names are listed in the solicitation, on the cover, and the book and/or its previews.
I have enjoyed Mr. Didio’s writing on Metal Men so far – as another commenter mentioned, I think he makes good use of the format.

Personally, I’m looking forward to Dan DiDio firing himself off a book for refusing to impose an editorially mandated revamp of the title.

And didn’t he co-write SUPERBOY with Palmiotti?

Well, OUTSIDERS has been great since Tomasi started writing it…
…so I’m betting DiDio will take over that book, and ruin it.

Once again, DC is aping Marvel. THEIR head person in charge is a celebrated artist, so Dan D. is gonna write a property that nobody gives two craps about. METAL MEN? Ridiculous. This is why DC will always be 2nd rate, at best.

I know he’s the EiC and all, but shouldnt quality, public and critical acclaim be the reasons for doing a monthly, not because he’s “having so much fun”?

No…no, it hasn’t.
Tomasi, outside of GLC, hasn’t been that good a writer.

The day Didio writes a monthley, will be the day I drop DC Comics altogether

Here’s the thing: he’s so hands-on as an editor that if he were to co-write a monthly–plotting it while someone else wrote the dialogue, and giving the artist some freedom to structure the pages as they see fit–there’d be basically no difference between that title and any other in the DC Universe.
