What NOT To Do At SDCC

July 25th, 2009

Wow, this is pretty low even for the kinds of things we’ve already seen floating around Comic-Con.

I know all about the “booth babes” and my own feeling on the subject is pretty much meh. Maybe I’ve just been inured to the use of women’s bodies to sell things, and I’m used to the idea that comic conventions are “for the boys” even though I’ve been fighting that notion in this here blog. It’s kind of funny to me, too, that “booth babes” are still used to lure fanboys, who then turn around and complain about Twilight fangirls squealing over Robert Pattinson. Still, way to take the whole idea to a new low, EA Games. Rewarding guys for committing “acts of lust”? With no definiton on what that entails?

So now the girls standing around awkwardly at various booths are not only going to be stared at and groped a few times, they’re going to have boys trying to do so and document it on photo to try to win a chance to–hang out with more girls?

Sounds like EA Games needs a quick lesson. Hey guys? Women aren’t like your video games or comic books. We’re people, too. We get to choose with whom we commit “acts of lust,” and sometimes we don’t like it on camera. We certainly don’t like being bought and sold for the price of a video game.

Someone keep these guys away from the Twilight fans, please.

Also, if I never hear another joke about a “chest full of booty” it’ll be too damn soon.

(thanks to Blog@’s own David Pepose for setting me off on a rant at 9:30 on a Saturday)

Totally agree with you about “booth babe.”

They do definite “acts of lust.” It’s the heading under which it’s defined: “Take photos with us or any booth babes.” The next one is “Prove It” and it explains what that means, then “Repeat” and explains what that means.

It’s still a stupid promotion made possible by the already stupid concept of “booth babes,” but it’s not maliciously suggestive.

Can we please stop whining about the TWILIGHT thing, please? If this is supposed to be a separate story, fine, but taking potshots at people who don’t like TWILIGHT is ridiculously amateur. A journalist isn’t supposed to bring their personal grudges into every article they write…

Someone on another blog pointed out that in most strip clubs, the patrons are not allowed to touch the dancers.

If only booth babes were given such autonomy.

  4. Jeff Trexler Says:

If I were EA’s lawyer–or ethical advisor–I would have killed this in a heartbeat. It’s not just an invitation to harass the women in EA’s employ; it provides an incentive to make unwanted advances to women throughout the Con and around San Diego.

The fact that EA seems to equate “acts of lust” as taking photos with “any booth babe” or “more babes” doesn’t actually help EA at all. You don’t have to be that clever a lawyer to see how this could lead to a viable assault lawsuit by an individual woman or a class of women harassed by men who stop them–or worse–for unwanted “acts of lust.” “We didn’t intend for things to go so far” is not going to be a viable defense, especially when the company has been so negligent as to encourage guys to take aggressive action.

EA legal should put the PR team under supervision, stat. Then again, we might also want to put the legal team under supervision, since they seem to think that small print boilerplate excuses negligent design.

did you see the comicvine vid where they went around zooming in on girls’ breasts and bums?

    “If I were EA’s lawyer–or ethical advisor…”

I don’t know what EA stands for, Jeff, but it’s clearly NOT “Ethical Advisor.”

    Egregious Assholes, maybe?

While it’s obvious to any rational being that the language used in the ad is merely meant to keep in the theme of the advertisement, whoever designed that ad should know their audience better. While I’m sure they’re not advocating “committing acts of lust” or actually guaranteeing “a sinful night”, there are plenty of socially inept nerds that won’t be able to distinguish between the ad’s language and the ad’s intentions.
