well this is interesting news, will it see print?

There are a number of question here. The marvelman/miracleman run had graphic scenes of child birth, male|child rape, graphic violence. How could Marvel reprint this?

The other question is the marvelman logo, apparently this is what Todd McFarlane has the rights to. It might seem like a minor trivial point, just use the old logo.. However the change of logo from the golden age to the Moore,Leach,Warrior logo is perfectly written into the story arc. See the Marvel MarvelMan t-shirt - old logo...

I for one would love to see this reprinted it contains some wonderful moments and fantastic art from leach, Davis, Totleben.
The Gaiman stories are ok... and the initial art change, Chuck Beckham, when the booked passed over to eclipse is horrendous and jarring after the wonderful art of Davis....

oh nostalgia.. the days when this, watchmen, swampthing, dark knight returms, born again where on the stands and it truly felt that the medium was truly special, your secret world.

oh and for anyone wishing to see Moore tackle a moore(sic) traditional superhero, and lets face it, most comic readers want to read traditional superheroes.. look no further than
Captain Britain, newly reprinted in omnibus format, with some truly amazing Alan Davis art... Shame its not being reprinted in its original black and white..... Alan Moore without pretense...

I look forward to seeing this story unfold..
Marvel reprints MarvelMan for Mature Readers.

As far as I can tell, McFarlane can't really do anything.

They can reprint those old Moore/Gaiman stories because they own the original character trademark and will surely have the blessing and cooperation of Gaiman and everyone who worked on the old stuff. Just change all the lettering to Marvelman instead of Miracleman and it's done.

Case surely closed.

Is it finally over? I wonder. I don't think Todd McFarlane will go down without a fight. I'm sure he will try something.

It bodes well that Buckingham was invited to the announcement. With Marvel helping Neil out with Marvels and Miracles with 1602 I think we could possibly see him and Mark finishing their run on the book. A definitive finish. At least I hope so. I don't want to see Miracle/Marvelman brought into the MU. I'm hoping Marvel will see thy can make enough money on reprints to let the story come to a close. If they want, they can have either Kid Miracleman or Young Miracleman. (Just kidding :P)

And all I can think about is how Marvel will now throw its own Captain Marvel into the trash to be forgotten in all likelyhood now. It was bad enough they only did The Return to hold onto copyrights.

And Billy Batson still can't have the right name on his comic.

Marvel has to talk to the people who worked on the "Miracle Man" series because, more than likely, that stuff was not created under a work for hire contract. Moore and the artists involved probably hold the copyrights to their efforts. If this is indeed the case, Marvel can't reprint the work without their permission.

As for Todd McFarlane: I wonder if he understood that Eclipse mainly published creator owned works. He also seems to think he owns the rights to Twisted Tales, even going so far as to try to create a TV series based on it, but he doesn't. I asked Bruce Jones specifically about this and he confirmed that McFarlane doesn't it the rights to Twisted Tales.

If McFarlane owns anything at all, it might be to the Miracle Man name, since it was created solely to avoid a trademark issue with Marvel Comics. But that would be about it, I think.

My first reaction, upon reading the press release, was: "Well, that's not nearly enough!" Meaning, the fact that they're going to reprint those (rather awful) old Marvelman strips from the 1950s and 60s was not anything to get excited about.

Then I started thinking and reading about it more, and came to conclusion that this must only be part 1. Marvel wouldn't be making a big deal out of just reprinting the original stories from the Silver Age of comics. Instead, they must be planning to also reprint the Moore and Gaiman stuff (very good, if true!) and probably even planning to have Gaiman finish "The Silver Age" and start and finish "The Dark Age" (more good news, if true). However, then I started imagining Micky Moran's fate after that happy event... when he becomes integrated into the Marvel Universe (probably via a story device that physically transports him to the 616 universe). If that happens, then I fear that they'll have gone too far. In that setting, Marvelman is just another Superman clone, with his uniqueness ruined by the existence of characters like Gladiator (from the Imperial Guard) and the Sentry. It just doesn't work.

So here's hoping I'm wrong in what the House of Ideas has in mind.

I think it would be cool if Neil Gaiman was handed the storytelling duties on Marvelman. That would REALLY stick it to Todd BIG time. Neil could create a whole new backdrop for the character...looking forward to it either way!

There's a lot of misplaced skepticism going around, methinks. Marvel wouldn't announce acquiring Marvel Man just for the privilege of reprinting old romps of MM with evil botanists. The fact that they're in talks/consulting/working with Gaiman, Moore & Buckingham alone is very promising. Me, I'm excited!

Though getting Ditko to draw more Spider-Man (or anything else, for that matter) would have been even better.

I remember when Miracleman came out back in the 80's. I was 14 and it TOTALY changed my thinking of the super hero genre. For those who never heard of the title, if Marvel does reprint the Moore and/or Gaiman issues, I HIGHLY recommend picking it up. the 1st 3 issue story arc by itself is simply amazing. This was Moore at his finest.

another example of how it's all about the creator (writer). miracleman by moore? amazing. miracleman by gaiman? not as good as moore. marvel's miracleman? who knows. if they get someone great to write it, it has a chance to be great. if not, not so much.

I've never read any of the Marvel Man comics, but if it had been written by the likes of Gaiman and Moore, then I'd definitely buy an omnibus or anything else of the sorts that collects those reprints.

Hmmmm. It does appear that Marvel have only bought the rights to use the Marvelman character, not the rights to publish the Moore, Leach, Davis, Austen, Veitch, Totleben, Buckingham and Gaiman stories. The thing is, without those, Marvelman is just another Captain Marvel/Superman stand in, and ultimately pointless. I expect the next announcement will be that Mark Millar is being given the writing reins, Kimota help us.

A lot of the big announcements feel like all style but this feels like all substance. I cannot wait to see what Marvel does with this one!
