Frank Miller writes first draft of 300 sequel

July 23rd, 2009

Would the sequel to Frank Miller’s 300 be called 301? 302? 600? 300 II? 3,000? 300: Three Harder?

Either which way, the Hollywood Reporter has stated that Frank Miller has recently polished off the first draft of his comic book sequel to 300, which smashed through audience expectations in a live-action film adaptation directed by Zack Snyder.

This follow-up will be published by Dark Horse, who printed the initial book. THR also asks some interesting questions regarding casting: Miller and company would be doubly hard-pressed to recruit original star Gerard Butler, considering (A) this role made him really famous, and (B) well, if you’ve read the book (or know anything about how the Battle of Thermopylae ended) he’s not in a position to do sequels.

Either which way, while the comics portion of the project is chugging along, the Hollywood Reporter has also stated that neither director Zack Snyder or writer Kurt Johnstad have been hired yet for work on the film.

Guys just because Mr.Miller is writing a draft to be published as a comic book that doesn’t mean it’s going to be adapted to film at soem point.

@Ayres – I’m pretty certain that Miller had decided to write the comic sequel for the express purpose of having it adapted, whether at the prompting of the studio or not I can’t remember. The fact that the sequel seems like a “done deal” isn’t just rumor-mongering, anyway, but the fact that this whole project has come up out of the fact that they were talking after the movie’s success about what a boon it would be to have another one.

Does anybody remember YEARS ago when Frank Miller, possibly in a drunken stupor, gave a speech at what I believe was a Wizard Con, lambasting all the comic creators out there for merely wanting to use comics as a stepping stone into Hollywood, and how he cited his own experiences (up to that point, the infamous Robocop 2 ordeal, etc.)? Then Robert Rodriguez did a bang-up job on Sin-City, and Zack made Miller’s already over-the-top sword-and-sandels epic even more ridiculous (to great or horrid affect, depending on where you stand), and suddenly Frank Miller doesn’t mind trambling on Will Eisner’s legendary creation, The Spirit, and writing a sequel to 300, a project both Zack Synder and Miller both said was logistically pointless.

He was offered Buck Rogers (did anyone ever want to see a Frank Miller Buck Rogers? really?), and possibly lost that chance with the horrible performance of The Spirit. Now Mr. High-and-Mighty-down-with-Hollywood is willing to bastardize his work and others, just to get back on “the good foot”, as it were, now that he’s no longer the golden child of comics-to-film.

the first post is right. even if he does write a follow up graphic novel to 300. There is a chance it would never come out as a movie. i hope this does not happen. i would love to see another one. As far as titles go, the author and some of you are just sounding stupid. The novel should be called 10,000 or however many Spartans were at the end of the first movie. I cant remember what the number was. I would be just flat out disappointed if it was 301, 302, 300 2, or anything ya’ll posted.
