Project Rooftop announces “Wolverine: Look Sharp” winners

He’s the best there is at what he does — and what he does… is so terribly stylish!

The Ol’ Canucklehead has changed costumes here and there since his earliest appearance in 1974, evolving from short whiskers to a scalloped cowl, from spandex to leather to black ops body armor, from yellow-and-blue to orange-and-brown and back again.

But Project Rooftop called several months ago for a new redesign for the Adamantium Avenger — and boy did they get a lot of responses! After weeks of deliberation, the winners of the Wolverine redesign contest were finally announced:

Grand prize winner Lee Chen Fang!

First prize winner Gabriel Pinto!

Second prize winner Ricardo Venancio!

And runner-up Dave Kennedy, whose distinct take on Wolverine was definitely my favorite of the bunch.

Among the special guest judges for this competition were Wolverine: Weapon X creators Jason Aaron and Ron Garney.

First prize looks like just a mash-up of his first 2 costumes with a hint of Liefeld (pouches!!!). The others are interesting. Though, if Wolverine just randomly showed up to an X-meeting in the runner-up costume, everyone would think he had finally completely lost his mind.

I realy enjoy Project Rooftop, but it’s impossible to judge each entry accurately, because so much of the illustration is based on the illustrators personal style and other factors, such as pose.

I know it would never work in reality, but I’d love PR to have a contest where artists have to work with a character model already in pose, to help level the playing field a little.

While I agree that useing a stock model sheet would level the playing field, it would also make the rsults very boring. This isn’t Nascar.
Besides that, drawing ability alone will not make you a finalist if the design doesn’t appeal to the Judges. The results for this contest are a clear example of this. The styles used run the gammut from expertly painted to cartoons to naively rendered. Design seems to be the main issue.
I mean Joe Quinnones design didn’t make the top ten and he can draw better than most any of us.
(and for the record his design is my fav)

I think it’s interesting how Grand, Second, and Third prizes seem to draw from Wolverine’s past for the visual design. The Grand is looks like it draws from his Weapon-X/X-Force history with some sort of psuedo-military design. Second seems to come from his past in Japan thanks to the ninja boots he’s wearing and the back of his shirt looking like it could be a yakuza tattoo. And Third obviously is a draw from his Canuck heritage.

Just noticed the SHIELD logo on the grand prize winning design’s belt. That is a cool touch.
