Did you have your fill from yesterday’s news of the first look at Scarlett Johanssen as the Black Widow?

Well, Paul Cornell of Captain Britain fame, along with Dark Avengers: Hawkeye artist Tom Raney, have some news that’ll make die-hard fans of the Soviet spymistress up a wall — Black Widow: Deadly Origin.

Cornell told the LA Times that his take on the character is that she is the world’s most experienced spy, honing her martial arts skills while having her body in prime condition for more than 50 years.

Yet the hook of this book will be that every man that Natasha has ever kissed — be it Iron Man, Hercules, or Daredevil — is now vulnerable to a “technological curse” which only she can foil. The four-issue miniseries is due out this November.

    Only a four issue mini?
For most of my comic collecting life, I’ve been hoping that someone would see what a rich and fascinating female character Natasha is, I sincerely hope this is a big success for everyone involved, I’d love to see an ongoing happen. Paul Cornell is one of those writers who not only always manages to bring something new to the table, he also manages to stay very respectful to the body of work that’s gone before, his Captain Britain run being a wonderful example of that. Tom Raney knocked my socks off years ago with DV8 and Stormwatch, and nothings changed since then. Great pairing on what could be a bit of a big seller considering the response Scarlett is getting on message boards right now, the interest on this title might be very ramped up.

Wow. What an amazingly sexist concept.

It’s like they didn’t even read Richard K. Morgan’s brilliant Black Widow mini series a few years back.

But what could you expect from the company behind “Marvel Divas.”

    Back to Rucka’s Batwoman…

  3. VichusSmith Says:

OK, so I was wondering why this was referred to as “year one” You’re baiting us!

  4. David Pepose Says:

@VichusSmith: When I wrote this post earlier, the LA Times had originally referred to it as “Year One.” But as soon as I saw the change on their end, I made sure to follow suit. Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for reading!

The image above looks like the obligatory “make the character resemble the actress in our upcoming movie” with the semi-curly hair and all.

    So lets get this straight:

The mini-series focuses on Natasha passing a deadly tecnho virus to every man she ever kissed.

So, essentially, the plot is about the Black Widow spreading VD throughout the Marvel universe.

How wonderfully progressive! I’m can’t wait to read upcoming tales about Hawkeye’s problem with genital warts and Tony Stark recovering from the clap.

Between this and Marvel Divas, Marvel is sure boosting their mysoginistic bona fides lately.

    TopJack wins.

Except that he (essentially) repeated himself when nobody reacted to his first comment.
