EW unveils first look at Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

July 16th, 2009
Author David Pepose

Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the cover for its upcoming issue, and it has the first look at a certain spy of the Marvel Universe:

That’s right, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow.

Granted, she’s mostly obscured by Tony’s armor, but you now know hair style, and you can see that the leather jumpsuit is making a transition to the screen. If you like your pictures extra blurry, there is a screen capture of an inside image that was aired on TV, which ComicBook.com has right here.

So what do you think, Rama readers?

It’ll be cool to see her as a badass. I like her as a dork in Woody Allen movies, too.

  2. Antonio Says:

Mickey Rourke looks like the white version of Flavor Flav, he has no business acting.

  3. Eric Says:

So excited for the Black Widow, but why does she have little-girl-princess curls

  4. Ken Says:

You know, I love Scarlett but I just wasn’t seeing “it”. However, after seeing that cover image, WOWZA! She looks amazing as the Black Widow. I just hope she can hold a decent Russian accent during the film.

  5. Fletcher Says:

“The Return of Ironman.” Like he has been gone for sooooo long. Who is he again? What does he do? EW is such a weak magazine.
Hopefully, this one will be better than the last one. The first one was sooo craptastic.

  6. anotherdae Says:

Don’t get me wrong I love me some ScarJo. BUt what bad casting! There are thousands of actual russian girls with the correct hair that could do this.

  7. hyperactivator Says:

Cool. I hope she does well enough to make it into the Avengers.

  8. Zombozzie Says:

Hey Antonio, I bet you have never seen The Wrestler, b/c if you have, then you wouldn’t of said such a silly comment :P

  9. 13 Says:

ScarJo looks great, but I also question the “princess curls” hairstyling. Something sleeker would seem more Natalia. The hair does seem a bit more toned down in the image from the movie. Perhaps its just overstyled for the cover shot.

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, eh! I like her well enough, but I just don’t think this role fits her. Mickey Rourke is a good enough actor but who came up with the costume?

What worries me more is that it looks like his suit gets its juice from an “Iron Man” power cell on his chest. I don’t want to end up with all the bad guys being created because of Starks invention.

It’s like the first few seasons of “Smallville” where every bad guy was was connected to “Kryptonite”.

Stark’s not the only smart guy in the world, other people can invent weapons all on their own.

I agree this seems like terrible casting:
Ms. Johansson is cute as a button but I’m cringing even right now hearing her do a Russian accent in my head.
Let’s hope she has the best dialect coach in Hollywood.

  12. Bloodmage Says:

I think Scarlett looks great as Black Widow, I still kinda think she woulda looked much better as Yelena though.

  13. Lucho Says:

    Scarlet is way overrated.

Still I´m looking forward to this sequel!!!

  14. Unit99 Says:

    >Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow.<

Yes she always looks good…I mean ahem! She looks just like the Black Widow. On a side note, am I the only one who enjoyes reading about Black Widow when she works outside the Avengers and the marvel Universe…or is it just me?

  15. Showbusiness77 Says:

I am pumped for Iron Man 2. Comic book movies are on a great streak currently with Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hulk, etc. It’s really difficult for me to see Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow. I honestly always expected an eastern european woman in the role. I feel that Milla Jovovich would be an absolutely perfect Natasha Romanova. I agree … what’s up with the princess curls.

  16. Wendell Says:

This picture is just the first of many, which will be released strategically to entice us. Scarlett looks OK here, of what we can see of her. I do like the bracelets, glad to see those on her, but I’d get rid of the “fingerless” gloves. Her costume is simple, I just hope the people who’re making the decisions don’t over-think it and give us something “distracting.” And speaking of distracting, I also hope they do something cool with Whiplash’s costume design. I would have liked to have seen Mickey Rourke play the Crimson Dynamo, but if Whiplash is his calling, so be it. Just give him a cool costume and get rid of the chest light, please. The main problem I have (with this picture) is Downey’s pose. He looks stiff, constipated and very uncomfortable. I know it’s only a picture for a magazine, but in comparison to Scarlett’s and Mickey’s poses, Downey’s looks awkward. For the record, I really admire him as an actor. My comment is not one against his skills, talents, etc. I do hope this movie’s much better than the first though. The first left me somewhat, underwhelmed.

  17. Ryan Says:

I don’t care for Johansson. She always comes off as someone who isn’t that bright but is desperate to come off as “deep.” I also don’t find here as “hot” as every other guys seems to think… but then again I think Megan Fox is way over rated to so I’m outside the norm.

That being said, Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the most overrated and obnoxious actresses out there and she didn’t ruin the 1st movie.

  18. silvanthalas Says:

Johansson as Black Widow is about as “good” as Howard as Jim Rhodes. Ie, good actor, but not good for the role they were cast in.

  19. Matt Says:

You guys are complaining about her hair being curly? Really? God I hate fanboys sometimes…
Looks amazing. I Loved the first, can’t wait for the second. Thor is shaping up to rock too.

  20. Stephen Says:

Scarlett does not look like she pull it off. She’s hot, but is she Russian super-spy hot? I think not. Why not go the easy route and just cast Famke Jansen?

  21. Erik Says:

Just… wow. One picture and people have made up their minds that she won’t work in the role. Once we get two pictures, people will be able to judge the whole script as well, right?

  22. Josh Says:

After seeing the first Iron Man movie, I was pretty sure part 2 was in capable hands and knowing Scarlett Johannson was involved was only a plus. I’m a huge fan of her acting and her beauty and seeing this photo only reinforces my faith in John Favreau as a director. This movie is going to kick ass and its highly probable that we are going to get a preview at the San Diego Comic Con. Can’t wait!

  23. silvanthalas Says:

“Once we get two pictures, people will be able to judge the whole script as well, right?”

Thanks for pushing logic off a cliff for us!

  24. Anal Surprise Says:

Is it me, or did they “tweak” the armor?

The armor is part of the reason the first movie was such a success. They nailed it perfectly. It was based on the Extremis armor, which has been the penultimate armor for Iron Man to date (putting aside nostalgia over the classic armor, which had no points of articulation on the elbows and knees and simply didn’t make any sense).

Marvel has taken way too many liberties with the armor since they nailed perfection during Extremis, and it’s nowhere near as cool today as it was back then. Thankfully, we’ll always have the first film, which froze that armor in time.

I’m a bit apprehensive about possible tweaks this time around. If they’re anything like the ones the comic books have seen in the past 2 years, it’ll be a step down. Maybe not a big one, but a step down.

I also agree with whoever said there are plenty of qualified Russian actresses who could’ve been given this role. This would’ve been a good opportunity for Marvel to MAKE a new star, alongside the established ones.

Loved the first movie, like all of the actors in the 2nd one individually… but something about this mix (and the tweaks to the armor, if those gloves are any indication) makes me apprehensive.

“Mickey Rourke looks like the white version of Flavor Flav, he has no business acting.”

Antonio, his Academy Award nomination says otherwise.

“Why not go the easy route and just cast Famke Jansen?”

Stephen, she’s 44 years old. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but they probably want to cast Black Widow as a bit younger, especially if they want to use her again.

  26. anotherdae Says:

yes Milla Jovovich would have been an obvious choice. What happened?

  27. Kon Def Says:

“Stephen, she’s 44 years old. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but they probably want to cast Black Widow as a bit younger, especially if they want to use her again.”

Uh, yeah but Robert Downey Jr is 44 and Mickey Rourke is 57 so that argument doesn’t hold much weight.

The obvious reason they don’t use Famke Janssen is that she was already in three Marvel films as another character (Jean Grey/Phoenix).

Milla Jovovich would have been totally hot, but maybe she’s a little skinny? Meh.

I think people are nitpicking Scarlet to death. She looks a little lolita there but it’s hot, so I’m not complaining.

  28. jmb418 Says:

“…which has been the penultimate armor for Iron Man to date”

It’s his next to last armor?

I don’t think that word means what you think it mean.
