Will they be LOST without BKV?

July 6th, 2009

MTV’s Splash Page picked up on a bomb dropped during a recent Damon Lindelof Q&A. Brian K. Vaughan, comic book writer extraordinaire and the man responsible for much of the pop culture, comic, and light-hearted moments (one can assume anyhow) on the last 2.5 seasons of LOST, is leaving.

“Unfortunately he has left for greener pastures,” the series’ executive producer Damon Lindelof told fans during a Q&A Session at Curzon Cinema.

There hasn’t been any indication yet what those greener pastures might be, but to get Vaughan, who was a full producer last season as well as one of the writers, to leave a hit show in its final season, those pastures must be very green indeed.

Since the breakout hit of Y: The Last Man and his run on Runaways ended, Vaughan has been content to write WildStorm’s Ex Machina as his only current comic book. He’s had a near radio-silence since shutting down his own website, BKV.TV in February, 2008. In addition to comics and TV, the writer has penned drafts of movie scripts adapting his own comics. We’ll have more as soon as we hear it.

unfortunate, but im not worried or anything, it will still be great

I pray it’ll be OK. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the show had a major upswing 2.5 seasons ago.

Coming into the home stretch, I assume that Cuse and Lindelhof will be taking a stronger hand in the direction of the final season. Since a lot of shows promote writers into producers, they become top-heavy after more than a few years. His departure will probably have a streamlining effect for the show.

I remember when BKV said that TV work won’t change his comics output. He was writing 3 ongoings then.

From what I understand, BKV has at least three new creator-owned comics projects in the pipeline. He’s focusing on getting Ex Machina finished first, though. I don’t think writing Lost has significantly affected his comics output (other than giving him the opportunity to leave work-for-hire comics behind).

    NOOOOO!!!

I mean, OK, Lost will probably be fine. I agree with Mr. Wesley that Darlton were probably going to be taking most of the writing chores as the show heads into the home stretch (now 18 episodes, as ABC gave one them one additional hour: woo-hoo!!), but it still hurts.

I have to wonder what these “greener pastures” are too. Perhaps the “Y” movie is starting to pick up steam?

At least there’s still Ex Machina to look forward too. I’m way behind, buying it in trades, and I haven’t picked one up in a while I’ll have to do that soon.

  7. Mr Wesley Says:

It’s really too bad that “greener” isn’t capitalized. That would have brought on all kinds of speculation.

  8. Shaun Says:

I’d have to guess that “greener” is literal, meaning more money, in that BKV’s probably a pretty hot property now, given Lost and how Hollywood is all over comic book titles right now. And given what a cash cow Lost is, whatever’s next must really be big. Which I speculated that the Y movie may be getting closer to reality.

Unless of course he’s planning to run as a Green party candidate for public office? :-)

You’re right on the money with this post, keep it up!
