So I suppose, like all of you, I’ll be checking out this Wednesday Comics thing from DC to see what I think about it–as a comic, and as an idea for the medium. There is also No Hero, and The Unwritten, which is still fabulous. Also, Jeff Lemire’s original graphic novel The Nobody comes out this week, and though I shouldn’t spend that kind of cash, I really am tempted.
With all that goodness, I don’t know if there’s any more room in my increasingly tight budget for more comics, but, well, I always want more comics. So what else hits this week that looks good?

My comic budget is ever tightening as well. I know this is slightly off-topic but I think I’m finally at a place where I’m ready to start phasing out 80% of the comics that I’ve been reading since I’m 9 (so roughly 16 years). I hate to say it but mainstream industry (specifically Marvel) has managed to finally literally turn-me-off from their comics. I look at my weekly comic lists and realize that I’m forking over on average $5 more per week. And this $5 is not because I’ve found great new books that I’ve love reading, but because 80% of the books that I pick up have gone up in price by $1, with absolutely nothing substantive to show for it (no extra pages, back-ups, nothing). I finally got really pissed and decided that I’m not going to be a test-subject while companies (again, especially Marvel) figure out how far they they keep pushing prices before I budge. I’m budging now!! So July is when I’ve committed to wrapping up a bunch of books that I’m no longer going to buy. It’s a shame too, because this means I’m going to stop buying a bunch of books that I really enjoy story-wise, but lately I just couldn’t get past feeling cheated out of my money to fully enjoy them. In the long run, I just can no longer justify throwing away money with price-gouged comics…it would be stupid and irresponsible of me.
That being said…back on topic, this week is small for me anyway. Green Lantern, Wednesday Comics, and The Unwritten. (Not-surprisingly, all books that are either standard $3, or I feel are worth the $4 price.)

I’m going with Wednesday comics first – definitely Batman and thinking about Red Robin. Not 100% sure about anything else yet this week.

Just FYI, David Mazzucchelli’s new book, ASTERIOS POLYP, is out this week, and it’s likely to be tops of my Best of ’09 list at this point. By a long ways.:)
I’m also very jazzed about the Hal Foster PRINCE VALIANT reprint from Fantagraphics.

as terrible as it sounds, there is nothing for me this week. If my wallet were to expand, I could expand my interests, but as it stands now, well… maybe next week?
Cheers,

In addition to Unwritten and Wednesday Comics, I’m picking up:
BPRD 1947 #1 (Never go wrong with dips in the Hellboy pool.)
Batman #688 (With today’s news I might be dropping this for 6 months.)
Green Lantern #43 (Can you say Event done right!)
REBELS #6 (Vril Dox, Starro. This story is building. A comfort read for me.)
Red Robin #2 (I might drop this one soon.)
Superman World Of New Krypton #5 (Still going strong.)
House Of Mystery #15 (This might be Vertigo’s “weakest” comic; a complement as it seems to me we are in what I’m calling the “Vertigo Renaissance.”)
North 40 #1 (The previews looked interesting)
Strange Adventures Of HP Lovecraft #3 (Great art and the best HP related comic I’ve seen in sometime. I do not like the pricetag however.)
