Marjane Satrapi wants your help

June 25th, 2009
Author Sarah Jaffe

While Iran is still wrapped in turmoil and the world watches more and more via the Internet, sometimes green Twitter avatars don’t seem like enough. It’s hard to figure out what you can do that might actually help.

Via Becky Cloonan, Marjane Satrapi has reached out to the comics community and asked that people sign a petition to the secretary general of the United Nations, asking for support for the Iranian people and an end to the violence.

Dear Friends

To all who beleive in freedom and dememocracy
Please sign this petition to United Nation to stop the violence, arrestations and torture in Iran.
The situation is really really bad.

Please forward it to whoever you know
Best and lots of love
Marjane Satrapi

The petition is here if you’re interested.

    Thanks, Sarah!

Stop messing in other country’s affairs . . . you just don’t learn, do you !?

Since you obviously don’t know, Satrapi is from Iran and lives in France. She appeared before Green party members in European parliament with possible evidence of fraud in the Iranian elections. Now, don’t you think we should sort of listen to what she might have to say? Thanks.

    Dear Troy:

Let me elaborate a little on my previous entry:

This is a comics blog, right ? Therefore, notwithstanding the request of X or Y for support, we should stick with comics.

Now, I will respond to your comment even when i feel it belongs to a world politics blogs, regarding a post by Sarah which I feel does not belong here for the very same reason.

Should we listen to what Ms. Satrapi has to say ? Yes and not because of who she is or the place where she was born, but just beacuse she has the right, in my view, to say whatever she thinks or wants.

The real issue from my end is, why should Sarah or any other analist, wheter political or not, should say something regarding that particular country ?

I am not talking about journalist reporting facts, but about people with an audience voicing issues about Iran.

We all know that this particular country is not fond of foreigners messing on their affairs, right ? That’s the way they think, feel, live and we should all (not only Americans) respect
    that.

We may not like the way they do certain things, I am not supporting the way they treat women or journalists for example, but still, is the way they live !

I am not sure you noticed, but Iran as a country don’t like when Americans and specially Americans mess with them. Then, why do it ?

Fraud in Iran . . . not surprised ! There where allegations of fraud in US elections a few years ago, there are fraud allegations in my country right now and we follow the system.

Iran government requested people to follow the legal system regarding the so called fraud allegations. They did and the system outlined several irregularities but still, the elections where declared as valid.

Why should foreigners would like to mess (or otherwise voice petitions to their audience) with Iran when why know how sensitive those guys are ?

That is my point Troy, just what I wrote on my firs message, but a little bit more detailed.

    Thanks

You said: I am not sure you noticed, but Iran as a country don’t like when Americans and specially Americans mess with them. Then, why do it? Why should foreigners would like to mess (or otherwise voice petitions to their audience) with Iran when why know how sensitive those guys are ?

The reason we, regardless of our nationality, should speak up against this injustice is because it is injustice. I don’t care if you’re from Mali or Maine, if you could do something to halt the injustice across the world and a petition can actually help, then you shouldn’t hesitate. You yelled at Shawn, “you just don’t learn, do you!?” But it is you who have to learn that justice and the voice of the people shouldn’t take a backseat to what any government thinks, especially this one that has already killed several of its own civilians who were protestors.

    So again, thank you Sarah.
