Heaven's War by Micah Harris and Michael Gaydos, in which C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams take on the evil Aleister Crowley. The title plays on Williams' novel, War in Heaven.

Lucifer's Garden of Verses Vol. 1: The Devil on Fever Street by Lance Tooks.

Creature Tech and Tommysaurus Rex by Doug TenNapel both have underlying Christian themes.

Thomas Nelson is publishing a fair number of Christian graphic novels for children and teens, and Zondervan's Zonderkidz line is publishing a lot for younger readers as well.

Fair point, Karen. Looking at the original press release (copied at http://captionbox.net/loosepages/?p=540), it's meant to suggest that this is the first U.S. university collection of comics focused specifically on religion.

I remember that conference. G. Willow Wilson went as the alumna-Muslim-comics creator trifecta. So I suspect they'll put Cairo in there, since it talks about the divide between the Muslim world and the West and how Muslim teachings could provide the tools to bridge that gap.

There are numerous comics Bibles floating around. (EC Comics, home of MAD, published one in the early 1950s. DC did some oversized treasury editions in the 1970s. Numerous manga bibles are in print.) Norton has Crumb's Genesis due in November, and the Wolverton Bible was just published. The American Bible Society has a few titles related to Christianity, and Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe has the historical aspects of many religions. Gene Luen Yang created "The Rosary Comic Book", which can be used as a rosary. In fiction, "Left Behind" has been adapted into graphic novel form. Tyndale and Barbour both publish fictional GNs to teach religious ideas. And Marvel adapted The Screwtape Letters into GN form.

Jews and comics are intertwined. (Superman = Moses) Stan Mack has a good history of Judaica, there are many fictional graphic novels pertaining to Judaica, and then there is the historical aspect, as found in "Palestine". Add the Holocaust aspects, and it mushrooms to include Magneto of the X-Men.

Michael Allred has adapted the Book of Mormon into GN form.

There are publishers in India who have published religious comics. Virgin Comics used mythological/religious avatars for modern storytelling. Ancient Mythology is rampant in Marvel and DC Comics. (Shazam and Wonder Woman being the two most visible examples.)

Islam is a bit more difficult, given that iconography is discouraged. "The 99" is fictional, but designed to appeal to a Muslim market.

And... Walt Disney Comics and Stories #666 includes the Mickey Mouse version of Dante's Inferno (produced in Italy).

What exactly does this mean: "first library collection devoted exclusively to the study of comics"? What about all these places?
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/eguides/graphic_novels/index.html#colls

A very odd statement, that throws a small spanner in my enjoyment of such good news!

I recently completed an extensive research project called "Who Saves the Superheroes?: An Examination of Eschatology in Comic Book Literature" at my college that revolved around analyzing the Apocalypse and Armageddon in comic books. (Eschatology is the study of ideas about the end of the world.) I would definitely suggest "Kingdom Come" to the library and would also go as far as suggesting "Watchmen". Of course, end of the world scenarios are kind of a recurring theme in comic books (especially in superhero comics), so it's easy to suggest almost anything along those lines.

And here's some shameless self-promotion regarding that research project I mentioned: http://news.rutgers.edu/medrel/news-releases/2009/03/who-watches-the-watc-20090305
