Look out, Dark Avengers, Hulk, and Secret Invasion: Wednesday Comics just jumped to the top of the pile.
DC Comics announced today that John Arcudi and Lee Bermejo’s Wednesday Comics feature starring Superman will be serialized in USA Today. The initial strip will appear in the July 8th print edition of the paper, with the following installments appearing online at USAToday.com.
For those of you not keeping score, this is the highest selling newspaper in America, with a circulation of 2.11 million, even narrowly beating out the Wall Street Journal. These strips will come out each week on USA Today’s site the same date as Wednesday Comics hits the stores, and the online strips will be promoted in the print edition.
“It just makes sense, no?” wrote Alex Segura in DC’s blog, the Source. “A weekly series created to remind readers of the joys of standalone comics and the newspaper strips many of us grew up on debuting in the pages of one of the most well-known and widely-read newspapers ever.”

That is just plain awesome!!!!!!
maybe they will include an ad with each chapter reminding people that the entire book is available at a comic shop.

Now this is actually big comic book news, not because of the “immeasurably long awaited” return of a character dead for two years, but because a major nationwide newspaper is going to be carrying it

…only one part?
June 15th, 2009 at 7:43 am
wow… even if it’s only a wordless superman strip like the shots above i’d be happy. Who is that artist? That simple strip there captures everything Superman is about.

Hey, the news wasn’t announced only on DC’s blog, but it’s big and bold on the front page of this morning’s USA Today’s Life section. Now that’s true nationwide coverage.

awesome. much deserved for superman

I like this – big news and if they mention the comic it’s another win.
Better use of the news media than Marvel’s “Reborn,” which isn’t really news anyway.

Detourne_me, I would figure the artist is Lee Bermejo, as it said in the second sentence in the article.
And this is pretty cool. I mean, Superman had huge success in the Sunday strips back in the late 30s and early 40s, so why not? If this is something that is continual for a long period, I see nothing but good things in the future.

Welp, time to get a subscription of USA Today!

Wow. Kudos to DC for this one. Very impressive and totally unexpected.

For once, DC actually has news to trump Marvel’s. The return of Steve Rogers? Eh. A partnership with USA Today? Pretty smart.

Superman fighting someone other than Lex Luthor. Mainstream America’s heads will be blown!

Great news but it points out how messed up the Superman books are – if someone goes to a store and asks for Superman or Action, they’ll get the confusing (to them) tales of er, the Guardian? Mon-El? Nightwing and Flamebird? who the heck are these people? etc etc.
Not to mention they’ll get those freakin’ ugly covers by Fernando Dagnino, and the dull but competent artwork of many recent neo-Super pencillers – e.g., Julian Lopezzzzzzzzzzz (the extra z’s are for boring), Sidney Teles (poor imitation of the lively, idiosyncratic stylings of Norm Breyfogle), Pere Perez (just kinda ugly), … Although some Renato Guedes, Pete Woods or Gary Frank might keep them coming back.

This is the first time the news has carried a legitimately awesone story.
“Spider-man Unmasked!”…for 6 months until we undo it, “Captain America Dead!”…for two years until…”Captain America Alive!”, allof these are pretty pointless headlines.
Way to go DC on actually knocking one out of the park.
June 15th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
um Sean…you bring that up you have to include Superman dies…for 10 months….and Batman Dead…for 2 months….
Be fair.
This is a home run for DC and for comics in general…anything that might bring more customers to comic shops is a win win!
Now with me saying that..how is this trick going to be fubarred?!?!?!
June 15th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
WOW! That comic strip looks better than any of the other Superman stuff being published right now! LoL! GOOD LUCK to the non comic book fans who may venture out to buy a current DC superhero book…Hint: They wont be able to understand any of the plot lines lol. Looks like Marvel will win here too lol!
June 15th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Wow, never thought I’d see this.

Agree with Unit99. Hadn’t even thought of that!

“The initial strip will appear in the July 8th print edition of the paper, with the following installments appearing online at USAToday.com.”
Hooray! Even if it’s ass-backwards, it’s about time DC started putting comics online. Now, if only they would do it with the monthly books.

You know what would be really cool? If after the Superman strip has run its course, they turn around and do the same thing with Batman. And then Wonder Woman. Etc.

don’t think things will get “cute” or watered down with Disney either. I mean, Miramax is a division of Disney… Look at some of the films they’ve made! Not kiddie fare. They also own ESPN and ABC. Sports (with all those beer and Viagra ads), and shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Grey’s Anatomy. Again, not for the kids.

Greetings everyone, This web page is remarkable and so is exactly how the subject had been expanded. I like a few of the remarks too even though I would choose all of us keep it on topic to be able to add importance to the topic.
