DC announces Red Tornado mini-series

June 11th, 2009
Author David Pepose

Can’t get enough of Big Red? Well, DC has the answer for you: a new Red Tornado mini-series.

The onetime member of the Justice League will be examining his origins in this series by Kevin VanHook and artist Jose Luis, teasing the idea of Reddy’s “android family,” which may come into tension with his wife and adopted daughter. And if you click the above link, you’ll also get a J.G. Jones image of a character known as the Red Volcano…

Hot stuff? Or is this series just going to be blowing in the wind? We’ll find out in September.

yes, because the people demanded this after reading all about him in Justice League of America. yes, this was a great idea Didio. Who would have thought we needed yet another story about Reddy?

  2. gary Says:

why do i think that the blackened figure below him is tomorrow woman?

  3. Bruce Logan Says:

    Oh Yea-aaaaaawwwnnn, ZZZZzzzzzzz…

  4. stipula Says:

Strictly for Red Tornado fans, I would imagine.

  5. Johnny Blaze Says:

They’re probably androids for the other elements:

    Air: Red Tornado
    Fire: Red Volcano
    Earth: Red Geo
    Water: Red Hydro

    or some such theme.

I hope their is some reference to his Justice Society origins!!!

  6. tcjohnson Says:

Whoops, got the writer mixed up with somebody else. This is the guy who wrote the oracle miniseries….yeah, still not buying it.

  7. Michael Says:

    About time

  8. matchesmalone Says:

The answer is… blowing in the wind. Elsewhere too.

Hey DC! More Jose Luis Garcia Lopes, less “Ed Benes protege” Jose Luis.

  9. matchesmalone Says:

oops Lopez not Lopes – no TLC fan here that was a typo

  10. birmy Says:

I can’t imagine there’s much audience for this. The endless exposure he’s gotten in JLoA, coupled with a must-pass writer (author of Oracle and Superman and Batman vs. Vampires and Werewolves), makes this a non-starter.

Actually, it was stated sometime back, that the other 2 Red’s are Earthquake and Monsoon.

  12. Simon DelMonte Says:

Anyone remember the Busiek Red Tornado minseries from right before the Crisis?

They should have stuck with the “ending in the letter ‘o’ motif.
But at least I got the concept correct: elemental androids.

    Simon DelMonte Says:
    >>Anyone remember the Busiek Red Tornado minseries from right >>before the Crisis?

Yes, from 1984 with the wretched Red Tornado art.

Is DC setting up us Reddy fans for another heartbreak?

  15. Stephen Says:

    Ugh. that should have read:

Yes, from 1984 with the wretched CARMINE INFANTINO art.

  16. Jim Kingman Says:

I remember the Busiek Red Tornado miniseries! I even remember when RT got that colorful costume! Justice League of America #110, published in December, 1973! I even remember when Red Tornado sacrificed his life to save Earth-2 in Justice League of America #102, published in 1972. I even remember when Red Tornado drew Earths 1 and 2 together towards complete destruction in Justice League of America #82, published in 1970! Man, it’s GOOD to be old!

But I have no idea what Red Tornado did last month.

  17. Tim Says:

So why was Greg Weisman and Joe Bennett’s Red Tornado mini canned? I would’ve bought that.

  18. Cisco Kid Says:

    Mini Series: Nah
    Backup Feature: YES, PLEASE!

  19. Scott Says:

Wasn’t Greg Weisman supposed to be writing a Red Tornado mini?

  20. Jeff Bear Says:

I’ve always been a fan of Red Tornado. My main issue is that nobody seems to be able to write a story about him without him getting blown up. It’s like they consider him a “Cheap Death” where he is constantly getting a new body. Does he get his bodies cheap from Sams Club or something? He seems to get new bodies more often than Batman gets Batmobiles. No wonder his wife loves him. It’s like sleeping with a different man every time!!! Give us something different. He was human briefly in his last arch in JLA. Did he do the deed? His wife could be pregnant! That at least could be cool and give us some good character development!

  21. Stephen Says:

At least have Gerry Conway write it.

    I miss Traya.

  22. Kevin Huxford Says:

That mini was done by Kurt Busiek back in the day? Oops. I was just saying how that mini bored me. But I haven’t read it since it originally came out, so maybe it was just my 9-10 year old tastes and not the writing.

  23. cpahl20000 Says:

    Sounds great !

  24. ScottyQuick Says:

As long as they’re giving VanHook characters I don’t care for, go for it DC!

  25. superfriend Says:

I no longer wear my rose colored glasses for the Satellite JLA. Looking back, I cannot figure out why Elongated Man or Red Tornado were ever on the team when Plastic Man, Metamorpho, and Black Lightning were not.

After having Red Tornado take up the main part of 6 issues during Meltzer’s run and having to revisit the story again during McDuffie’s, I have no interest in another story focused on him.

  26. Kurt Busiek Says:

    >> Yes, from 1984 with the wretched CARMINE INFANTINO art. >>

    The pencil art was gorgeous.

If we’d been able to get an inker who’d have been sensitive to the pencils — particularly the wind and rain effects — it’d have been sweet.

But in any case, Carmine’s part of it was done well.

    kdb

  27. Tessa Says:

Considering that Oracle: The Cure was such a catastrophe…

Man, I’m sorry for you Red Tornado fans.

  28. PyroTwilight Says:

I hope Tomorrow Woman appears in this mini to some degree. She was made by Morrow like Red Tornado’s body was they’re family-ish.

  29. empty_handed Says:

this is ridiculous.. first Magog ONGOING! and now THIS!.. we are sick and tired of red tornado in the past 2 years or so in JLA..

i cant imagine anyone getting this except die-hard fans of the character..
