As with his Peanuts design, I don't feel that the cover captures the tone of the comics themselves, and it really reflects his own particular style, more than anything else. Compare this to Jacob Covey's Popeye design, which makes use of Segar's own art, but still manages to look contemporary and slick. Even Seth, in a recent interview, admits that he doesn't think he's a very good designer because he's only interested in working within his own personal style. I am certainly of an age to have read Melvin Monster comics when I was a kid; I know I picked up Nancy, Little Lulu, and others. But I don't have much memory of the comic, although the name was familiar. The D&Q Melvin/Nancy FCBD flip comic was a big hit at my school this year, and every single copy I had was taken - mostly by girls and a few adults who remembered the comics from their childhood. I agree, this D&Q edition is gorgeous. I'm so looking forward to reading it! This book is in my stack of must-read-SOON books.
