Lainey Gossip has posted up the first three photos of Josh Brolin as that baddest of the bad ex-Confederate gunslinger, Jonah Hex:

jonahhexlive

Pretty cool, right? if you click the link above, there are two more images. We’ve already seen some photos of Megan Fox in costume, for this adaptation of the Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray-penned comic. John Malkovich and Will Arnett are also in the film.

Jonah Hex is due out later in 2010.

  1. Darthphere Says:

What gives you the idea this movie is inspired by Palmiotti and Gray?

  2. Jomma Says:

    Looking good!

  3. midKnighter Says:

Not what I expected. Don’t recognize Jonah or Josh instantly from this picture. I’m sure I end up enjoying the movie nonetheless.

John Albano & Michael Fleischer should be credited also.

  4. Wyatt_Burp Says:

    He ain’t ugly ‘nough.

    Megan Fox’s purty awesome.

  5. Mega Gear X Says:

I wonder if they are going to CGI in the nasty fleshy strip over his eye…

  6. Waiting4GreenLanternTheMovie Says:

Very early prediction, this movie will make less than $30 million in its 1st 3 days in the theaters, then the numbers will drop dramatically every weekend thereafter.

    Jonah Hex?

    Is DC/Time Warner serious?

What’s up with Green Lantern: The movie? What’s the hold up?

    Jonah Hex?

Please. This movie will do about as well as MARVEL’s last Punisher: War Zone movie…and that’s NO compliment.

    Jonah Hex?

  7. Fred Says:

Well, there have been films based on obscure characters whose box office has been surprising (Blade) to truly jaw-droppong (Men in Black). Conversely, there have been movies like Superman Returns and Hulk that flop despite starring iconic heroes. It all comes down to quality, marketing, and good timing.

So, Jonah Hex may beat the odds because its a comic flick from a barely used genre (Westerns).

  8. Jerry Says:

I doubt the general public will even think of this as a comic book movie. It will sink or swim on whether they can sell it as a straight Western. For which $30 million would be a pretty good opening, actually.

  9. CitC Says:

I don’t think there will be over the top money expectations for this movie. How have westerns been doing anyway? How did 3:10 to Yuma and the Jesse James movie do (”I will be mad as a hornet. I will be hot” - I love that line)?

  10. kaijubotx Says:

Looks OK, but no deranged eye on the scarred side? Maybe they’ll CGI it in post?

  11. HeatHotHard Says:

He’s not ugly enough; his eye’s not bugged out. Get the CGI Two-Face from “Dark Knight” to play Hex.

  12. Jonah Hex Says:

Hex has been one my favorite characters for years, This first picture looks pretty good. Lets hope the movie is good.

  13. snikt snakt Says:

Not quite what I envisioned it as looking, but looking forward to this movie nevertheless!!!

  14. 04nbod Says:

his disfigurement doesn’t look extreme enough to me

  15. Waiting4GreenLanternTheMovie Says:

    To Fred,

You’re right, Blade was an obscure character whose success is [arguably] considered the franchise that launched the “new” type of superhero movies we enjoy today. For the record, I do believe that Blade revived the entire live action, hero movie genre, post Christopher Reeve/Superman: The movie and Keaton/Nicholson Batman movies. However, the first Blade had NO real competition in comparison to what Jonah Hex is going to encounter in 2010 and the bar of expectations (as far as the “wow” factor is concerned) has risen to such heights that I just don’t think a “cowboy” movie is going to reach, much less surpass the mark. In the same year, Jonah Hex will be going against Iron Man 2, Spiderman 4 and probably the Transformers 3 and all that DC can put out is a movie about…Jonah Hex? Good luck to Jonah Hex: The Movie and DC, they’re both going to need all the help they can get to make an impact (and profit) in the 2010 movie arena. If Superman Returns failed to deliver the goods, I wonder what are the expectations of Jonah Hex? To make more than $550k in opening weekend? It might make that.

  16. jimmy palmiotti Says:

John Albano and tony DeZungia’s created Jonah Hex, justin and i write the new series. a lot of the visuals in the film were taken from the new series…you will see actual scenes from some of the series covers we have done come to life.

as far as Jonah going against other films, well…i think it is going to do well on a number of levels…first, its being shot like a real western and not a cgi monster like the new terminator, which still hasnt made its budget back yet.

second , its got academy award winning actors like brolin and malkovich…and last, got a cast and crew that are pretty amazing.

who will see this film: western fans, comic fans, brolin fans, malkovich fans, megan fox fans, action fans, and so on…just wait to see the trailer…i think its gonna surprise a lot of people…

and WAITINGFORTHEGREENLANTERNMOVIE: dude: what does transformers 3, spiderman 4 and ironman 2 have in common? they are all blockbuster sequels…nice to shoot down a film before its even made. your reasoning about money and box office are not reality based…all hex has to do is find an audience and make budget…which is 1/6th of all those movies mentioned. really, all I want is a great , well told story.

Ii am staying positive as hell and looking forward to this. I think Brolin looks awesome.

  17. Captain Infinity Says:

I seriously doubt that WB is sinking $150 million dollars into making Hex, so it’s not like it has to set all kinds of box office records to make a profit. Perspective, people.

  18. Captain Infinity Says:

    Also, what Jimmy said…

  19. BobH Says:

    That’s “DeZuniga”

  20. Ryan Says:

Looks great! Stylistically, I’d love to see Brolin packing 1851 Navy cartridge conversions in keeping with his ex-Civil War look (rather than the newer 1873 SAAs), but that’s the Western gun-nerd in me speaking.

Man, I’d love to be an extra in this movie.

  21. the one Says:

What will make or break this film other than if its good or not is will it appeal to everyone since the main character is dressed in his confederate army suit. Believe it or not that is still a touchy issue.

  22. Dohan Hex Says:

“In the same year, Jonah Hex will be going against Iron Man 2, Spiderman 4 and probably the Transformers 3 and all that DC can put out is a movie about…Jonah Hex?”

    ——————————

    My response:

No…Umm, Jonah Hex is coming out in August 2010. Transformers 3 hasn’t even been greenlit yet so it doesn’t have a real release date. Spider-Man 4 is coming out in 2011. Iron Man 2 is coming out in May 2010, and it’s not even competiting agains Hex.

WAITINGFOR THEGREENLANTERNMOVIE, before you talk crap, do some research before you get owned again and again.

  23. Unit99 Says:

    >Waiting4GreenLanternTheMovie Says:Is DC/Time Warner serious?

What’s up with Green Lantern: The movie? What’s the hold up?

    Jonah Hex?<

YES, BECAUSE unlike Marvel, DC actually publishes NON-Superhero comics! Uhh! SHOCKER! Did you know that there are NON-Tight wearing comics????

  24. Corey Henson Says:

Waiting4theGreenLanternMovie: You make a couple of good points, but I think you’re jumping the gun a little bit on your prediction of the movie’s success. First, Megan Fox’s star is on the rise, and after Transformers 2, she may become a legit box office draw. People like movies with hot women. Second, look at the success of 300. It was a weird-looking gladiator movie with a no-name cast, and it made $200 Million domestically. So there is a precedent.

  25. Evil@work Says:

“who will see this film: western fans, comic fans, brolin fans, malkovich fans, megan fox fans, action fans, and so on…”

Hey don’t forget us Palmiotti and Gray fans…

  26. jimmy palmiotti Says:

    evil work…never!

sorry for spelling your last name wrong tony!!!

  27. abe Says:

I can’t wait to see this movie.
    This looks amazing. Just amazing.

  28. Matt M. Says:

This won’t be perceived as a comic book movie by the general public. Now whether or not the production has such expectations because of the studio itself is another question entirely. And remember, even “flops” like SPEED RACER make back their costs or they wouldn’t do ‘em. Just because you’re hoping for a MEN IN BLACK doesn’t mean that you’re gonna get it, or be particularly displeased when it doesn’t happen.

I’d love for this to drive up sales of the comic, but hey, the fact that the comic is still ongoing is pretty impressive in this day and age.

    We needs more westerns, dammit.

  29. Michael Says:

    Jimmy,
This looks freaking awesome. I have to admit that while I love your work I held off on Jonah hex because …it’s a western. The times I have had to talk with you and Amanda at signings and at Megacon made me give it a shot. It’s great! Look forward to it on the big screen!! Congrats man!

  30. Waiting4GreenLanternTheMovie Says:

To Jimmy Palmiotti, Captain Infinity and Corey Henson, I genuinely appreciate the intelligent, articulate and (let me emphasize) MATURE manner, in which you all expressed your opinions, without having to resort to using childish rants and quotes, as certain fanboys did, because I may have hurt someone’s feelings by speaking less-than-highly of their hero. All of your points, Gentlemen are very valid and makes excellent sense.

OK, so Jonah Hex won’t be going up against Spiderman 4 and (as I said “probably”) Transformers 3, but it will be released in the same year as Iron Man 2 and even though they may not go against each another directly, ultimately their box office earnings will be compared to one another for the sheer fact that they both originate from comic book properties. That being said, at-the-end-of-the-day, making movies is primarily (if not entirely) about making money and I don’t think countering MARVEL’s box office dominance by releasing a Jonah Hex movie is the right direction, at this time. With the unprecedented success of Dark Knight (and once again, in my opinion) I don’t think they [DC] should follow up that progress and momentum, by releasing a movie featuring a C-list character like Jonah Hex (and let’s be honest, he IS a C-list character). It just seems like a backwards move to me, but that’s my perspective. There are so many other characters in DC’s library who deserve a cinematic audience, while the superhero movie business is STILL thriving. How about a live action movie of Wonder Woman, SHAZAM, Green Arrow or dare I say it…Green Lantern, which is currently (and has been for quite some time) one of DC’s hottest selling comics.

These superhero/comic book character movies and subsequent franchises are not going to last forever and I just feel that DC should put its best foot forward (while the “getting is still good”) and concentrate on getting their more popular characters onto the big screen.

  31. jim Says:

    Totally love it :)
    Can’t wait
Comic movies are on the rise :)

  32. George M. Says:

I think this looks cool. I love westerns, and Josh Brolin has proven he has the cred to pull in a real audience. Lots of potential for real crossover success. I predict that they will dirty-up his face a bit in post, but I kind of like the subtler, more realistic look. It sells the film a bit more.

  33. Steve Broome Says:

Everybody’s an expert on the box office now lol. I like the cast a lot, looking forward to this.

  34. Axon Rey Says:

I think facial hair was a poor choice for this- and maybe it’s because it’s a still, but this shot looks pretty low budget.

  35. Brad Smithee Says:

Waiting4GreenLantern: I’m assuming you’ve been browsing the net, as the Green Lantern film has been all over it - especially in the last 3 months. Casino Royale’s Martin Campbell is directing, Berlanti, Green and Guggenheim (the latter of which has been on the net a lot talking GL) are writing the screenplay, and scheduled release date is June 17, 2011. A tonne of the rest of the cast has already been hired as well. Looking forward to it big-time, but on to Jonah Hex.

Brolin’s an inspired choice, and Malkovich is awesome. The pics look good so far, I’m sure there will be some tweaks in post. A lot of people won’t care whether this is a comic film or not, and either way I’m bringing some friends on opening weekend. Great talent and a genre we don’t see much of - plus it’s Jonah friggin’ Hex for me. Wahoo!

  36. Brad Smithee Says:

by the way, I meant a tonne of the CREW has been hired. check the imdb page for more info.

  37. NeoSamurai Says:

I’m still hesitant on the make-up but it could look better in close-ups and in action. I’m more concerned on which story they’re using for the movie–I’ve heard the one that is a zombie movie and the other that’s a gritty spaghetti western revenge tale both being mentioned as the solitary plot (i.e. Malkovich as a vodoo practitioner in the zombie flick or Turnbull in the spaghetti western). Both could go very well, but have different kinds of marketing power.

  38. E. Allen Says:

I don’t feel that Hex has to be the next Dark Knight to be a success. I’m sure it’s going to draw an audience from comic fans, western fans and movie fans. Why is it that so many posts are all in the negative vain, before the movie even been completed. After you see the movie, give your opinion, and stop speculating.

  39. Mallfunction Says:

This movie will probably be in the cinemas in the USA in the rest of the world a direct to dvd film.

Will see it but i doubt i will go to the cinema for it.

  40. Kevin Says:

This will be perceived as a comic book movie about as much as A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE or ROAD TO PERDITION were…which is to say not at all.

  41. abe Says:

    Mallfunction, I certainly hope not.
I want to see Hex on the big screen here in Australia.

  42. NeoSamurai Says:

    @Kevin

It depends on what the story is. If it’s the zombie spaghetti western script, not necessarily. If it’s the straight spaghetti western, you could be right.

  43. Richard J. Marcej Says:

Jonah Hex is one of the (very few) comic characters, and may be the ONLY comic character from the mainstream companies that could actually get a normal non-comic reader to read a comic book.

Not only are the monthly issues of Jonah Hex well written and illustrated, but you don’t need to read 20 other cross-over issues starring characters and covering storylines to figure out just what the hell is going on!
And you don’t need to know 20-30 odd years of continuity without being completely lost!

A movie fan/western fan, who enjoys this film and the characters within, can easily enter a comic shop, pick up an issue, read and enjoy. They won’t be confused or frustrated because they don’t know who this is or what that was and they may even return and buy the next issue, and next, etc…

Hell, a Jonah Hex makes a helluva lot more sense, if an intent is to help introduce comics to new customers, then any of the current crop of super powered-continuity-crossover-crisis confused characters!

(and besides, this may get DC to offer new volumes of Jonah Hex Showcase volumes!)

  44. ComicBookShopper Says:

There is one big reason why this movie may not be as good as many hope: Megan Fox.

Hex is a very character-driven story. He is most successfully presented as a loner who no one ends up liking very much. By putting Fox out there as a distraction from what should be a full-bore introduction to the ugliness that is Jonah Hex, they risk watering down what could be a strong story.

Look at the reviews of Transformers 2. They put in so much useless nonsense about the human characters (including Fox), that they forgot to make the robots the most important thing in the film.

    Here’s hoping…
