What is Happening with Wizard’s Store?

If you visit Wizard’s Storefront Feedback at Amazon.com, it appears something bad has happened of late. The 90 day feedback shows 23% negative, but the 30 day feedback shows 53%. Exploring the full feedback, 35 out of the 50 most recent are 1 star out of 5. These have some interesting comments attached to them:

“I ordered a $200+ robot dog and they sent me plastic superman figurine!??!!?? I sent the seller 2 e-mails and received NO response and it’s been over 2 weeks! What a bunch of crooks! AVOID AT ALL COST!! Amazon should really consider banning this merchant from the marketplace!”

“they send the wrong toy plus it was a cheaper version, and charge me original price they never answer my emails ,i had to contact amazon directly, but amazon saved the day, till this day i havent heard from wizard entertainment”

“The seller falsely advertised the LEGO Star Wars Clone Scout Walker. When contacted a couple days later a crushed box with a piece of junk metal arrived. I contacted the seller several times & got no response. Even after filing a claim with Amazon the seller still refused to acknowledge the defect/cheating they performed.”

Most other comments are very similar. There are several reports of people receiving a Superman action figure in lieu of their items, several reports of multiple attempts to contact Wizard via email and phone being ignored, or being sent damaged or overpriced product, complete with the lower pricetag on the box. I contacted Wizard to ask about what seems to be a major case of mail fraud, and received this official response from April Wiggins:

“This is an issue that we are aware of and are addressing. During a recent
inventory move we incurred some damage to parts of our inventory. Since many
of our customers are collectors, these items are not suitable. When this
occurs, we send people a free gift (with shipping at our own expense) to
compensate them for their inconvenience. They also receive a full refund on
their order.

Although we send a note attached, it is confusing to some. We apologize for
any confusion and we continue to clear up any misunderstandings. To date,
anyone who was inconvenienced received a full refund and a free action
figure.”

Now, there are zero out of those 35 cases where the same poster has posted again to say anything like, “I got my refund” or “I re-read the paper that came with the Superman figure and realized they sent it as an apology,” so it still seems like something else might be going on. According to an anonymous source within Wizard, the customer service phone number no longer “goes to anything” and the non-replies to the email address are on purpose.

In addition, looking at Wizard’s Forums, the customer service problems appear to have been harrowing them for a lot longer than the last 30 days. A post dated August 8, 2006 is the first to note the non-answering of email and the phone number that’s very difficult to find. The frequency of these style of posts kicked up in March of 2009, with six and a half pages of comments similar to the Amazon feedback. Most of these include statements like, “I’ve been waiting 3 weeks,” “My order shipped with several missing items,” and “I’ve emailed several times with no reply.” These customers are seeing charges come up on their credit cards days or weeks before anything is shipped. They contradict Wiggins’s official statement, saying that after several months they had to dispute the charges with their credit cards in order to get their money back.

A moderator, “Jerry Whitworth,” has gone on this thread repeatedly telling people, “Don’t order from a company you have problems with,” as did moderator “jaydee74.”

One poster, Chris Underwood, even pasted in his entire customer service email experience. He received order confirmation April 30, 2009. He then sent emails that weren’t responded to on May 1, May 6, May 8, and May 9, all with no response.

With all this evidence, it seems something more than a note that is “confusing to some” is the problem. Wizard’s official statement says they’ve been prompt with refunds, but the customers tell a different story. While one has recently noted a refund, it was a full month after order placement (and credit card charge), and still with no communication.

This may be indicative of the larger problem Wizard has been facing over the last year or so. With magazine closings, location closings, and layoffs, things don’t look to be getting better. While Gareb Shamus purchased the Big Apple Con and revived the Chicago Comic-Con name, it is interesting to note that both DC Comics and Marvel Comics are conspicuously absent from the list of exhibitors for this year’s Chicago show, which is only about two months away. Image, Dark Horse, and IDW are likewise missing.

Rich? Rich Johnston, is that you?

Nice bit of detective work there, Lucas.

When I buy my collector’s toys, I got through private individuals on eBay, so I just assume that there is the possibility for a scratch here or there.

But knowing Wizard’s general reputation, I wonder why would anyone buy toys from them at all, regardless of their rating on Amazon.

  2. Metal Misfit Says:

It’s all the fault of that smug Jerry Whitworth!

I’ve bought and sold on Amazon for years, and even the “better,” 90-day rating of 20-odd percent negative is way too high for someone who does the kind of volume that I would imagine Wizard does. If you’re a major, commercial vendor and you’re not at or around 90% positive feedback, something’s gumming up your works.

I think the DC & Marvel will not have booths at the Chicago Con is a little misleading. Dan DiDio will be at WW Philly and DC will have a presence there, but they are not listed as “exhibitors” on the WW Philly page. Yes, companies like Avatar are listed, but Avatar does actually do sales through their booth, and Image, Marvel, DC et al don’t, so that may be the distinction. Many of the folks on that list look like vendors with booths, not publishers who are just displaying and promoting.

Interesting. I was working a recent convention as a dealer when a gal hit up our table with a packet from Wizard/Chicago Comic-Con. She said very urgently, “I represent another convention and we REALLY NEED more dealers!”

    Now I know why.

I sell on Amazon and these guys don’t hold stock of anything they list. They over inflate prices (sometimes over 1000% markup) and when they get an order, they buy at normal price from vendors like me. They have the item sent to them and then they send it out to the customer. That’s why it takes weeks to get any sort of response from them because they themselves don’t know when an order from the vendor they purchased from will come in. If they feel an order is taking too long, I assume weeks, they will send out a small figure hoping this will buy them some more time so they can look elsewhere. They figure the loss of money they incurred from the cost of the figure and shipping will be made up by the hyperinflated prices they are charging the customers. This is fraud plain and simple and they should be shut down immediately.

April Wiggins is a liar and Wizard is actively and knowingly engaged in fraud.

After hearing in March about a really good sale that they were offering I ordered 52 separate items (sometimes in multiple quantities) on Wednesday April 1st. My order had a Subtotal of $258.48 with Shipping of $17.99 for a Total $276.47. I payed through Paypal (something I later came to regret) and they promptly e-mailed me to confirm the order.

I heard nothing more until 2 weeks later when Paypal notified me of a $21.94 refund from Wizard. To this day I have no idea what that refund was for.

Over two weeks later I received a package from them in a HUGE box. There was no packing slip or invoice included. Beyond a couple of pieces of newspaper, there was no packing material. All of the items had been dumped in the box and thus many of them came damaged. I had one TPB arrive where there is a noticeable hole in the cover because the corner of another Trade had been forcibly pushed through during transit. I had a variant cover book for which I paid $9.99 sent with no bag, no backboard and arrived looking as if it had spent significant time being kicked by someone. Imo a $9.99 variant cover from the last 2 years should not arrive in the condition where it would be graded “poor” or in the 3.0 range from CCG.

When all was said and done, the package was missing 8 items totaling $52.92 + the shipping cost of those 8 items which i do not know the amount of. I am glad that they had issued me the $21.94 refund, but they still owe me over $30.00 more.

I tried to be forgiving with the damaged items as not everything will be in great shape when it’s on sale. So giving them the benefit of the doubt, the total from this group came to $43.98 + whatever the cost of Shipping is, which I am unable to calculate with certainty.

I sent two e-mails to wizarduniverse and never heard back. I then opened a dispute with Paypal and sent more e-mails through them. I never heard back. I went to Paypal to escalate my dispute and was told because Wizard had sent me SOMEthing then Wizard had fulfilled their responsibilities.

Wizard is actively and knowingly engaging in illegal business practices. I was not previously aware of those Forums, but thank you for providing the link. Hopefully someone will soon organize a class-action suit so that we can sue the heck out of these %$#@’s.

    Hm,

I just joined that Wizard Forum and it says that I do not have permission to reply to that thread. Figures.

Ordered a AP statue from them on may 24th. received a cheap south park plastic figure on june 5th. wizard entertainment from what I can see is guilty of at least continual deceptive advertising and maybe even mail fraud. how any business, artist or person in the collectibles industry would want to associate with this company is a shock. I will file a bbb complaint after I get cc refund

  10. Gary Says:

I ordered 2 Batman Knightfall figures for a total of $38.00 including shipping. The items arrived within a week but my credit card had been charged twice, so I paid $76.00. I went online to the Wizard Universe store to check the items and they had raised the prices from $15.00 each to $30.00 and $50.00 for each one. I immedeatly sent an email requesting a refund and was replied to by “Peter Katz” who told me, “No probelm at all. We will take care of this for you. Regards. Petar Katz, Wizard Entertainment”

Guess what? I haven’t seen anything yet and Peter/Wizard Customer Service has not replied to any further emails about this. I have filed complaints with the BBB and the FTC and both have been ingored by Wizard so far. I’ve filled out a complaint with the New York State Attorney General’s Office but haven’t mailed it yet.

  11. Matt Says:

I ordered 15 figures from them on 7/16,
but only received 5 of them!!!!!
i tried to send mails to them for 2 weeks!!! But they got no reply at all!
i just tried to ask help from paypal but it said that my order is not protected?!
is there anything else i can do?
i just want my money back
    thanks~

I, too, sell on Amazon and had Wizard regularly puchased items from me they they were listing in stock for far more than I was selling them for (one time I sold an item for $12.99 that they had listed for $80). Several of the items were near Christmas time and I can’t imagine they were able to get the item to their buyers in time for the holidays since I had to ship it to them first. As a seller on a much smaller scale, I always wondered how they were able to remain selling on Amazon with such horrible customer service.

  13. Ron Nelson Says:

This is the same problem i had at chicago comic con (wizard world. i bought a vip ticket based on what i would extra items i would receive. Some items were missing, show exclusives that they said would be at the show never arrived at the convention. Im still waiting for 1 more item that i dont think ill every receive. Stay away from this company there is no customer service.

  14. eggie Says:

Now it seems that they’ve closed the online store and their amazon store as well…guess that should tell us something!
