Tell Me What to Read: Wolverine edition

May 13th, 2009
Author Sarah Jaffe

OK, so I already hit up the comic shop for this week. (Purchases: Hellblazer trade, Young Liars and Unknown Soldier #1, which I should’ve read months ago. Unforgivable. Also, if you didn’t buy The Unwritten and the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, we aren’t friends anymore.)

But. In the wake of a thoroughly mediocre Wolverine movie that I enjoyed far more than I should’ve, I find myself with a strange desire to read Wolverine comics. I’m a Jason Aaron fangirl, so I’ve been tempted before this to check out his take on the character, but I have this problem where I want to go back to the beginning with everything–it keeps me out of the superhero section quite often. I want to know EVERYTHING, which is impossible with these characters with this epic history.

So, I figured I’d ask you. Recommend me a trade that I can pick up and devour in one sitting. The more foulmouthed and gory, the better.

(No, the picture wasn’t entirely necessary. But I like it.)

Wolverine: Get Mystique or X-Force: Angels and Demons are probably the two best recent Wolverine stories for a new reader, although you might want to read Messiah CompleX beforehand if you’re really out of the loop on the past few years of X-Men status quo. Really, if you’re looking for tons of violence, you can’t go wrong with the current incarnation of X-Force, especially the Wolverine story in the “Ain’t No Dog” one-shot Charlie Huston did last year.

Another excellent low-brow Wolverine story is the Punisher/Wolverine crossover Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson did for Marvel Knights Punisher #16-17. It’s really more Punisher finding increasingly comical ways to test the limits of Wolverine’s heaing factor than an actual Wolverine story, but any book that has Frank the Tank and the Old Canucklehead slaughtering an army of chainsaw-wielding midgets is worth reading.

I really liked the Enemy of the state/Agent of SHIELD storyline a few years ago by Mark Millar and JRjr.

hmmn, but if you want a concise history of wolverine in a trade…
I’m not sure. If you can find trades of the Marvel Comics Presents…Wolverine those were amazing stories. The really boosted Wolverine into the spotlight as they were solo stories and he really developed the Clint Eastwood attitude and look.

  3. Matt D Says:

Seriously, go read Wolverine: Get Mystique and Wolverine: Manifest Destiny.

Aaron’s Wolverine stuff is the best in years.

  4. Shane Says:

If you want to read something Wolverine-y, you could always just get Origin. It’s certainly not the first thing published about the character, but it is, well, his origin story. You already know one of the big twists of it after seeing the movie, of course, but I think that it would be a great place for you to start.

Assuming you haven’t read it already.

  5. Daryll B Says:

For his history, Marvel did a pretty good job summing up everything in that Wolverine Saga freebie giveaway a couple of months back…

As far as trades go..I agree with Enemy of the State and Get Mystique….but I’d also recommend:

Blood Debt (for the possibility of it being the major basis of Movie 2 along with the first Wolverine trade)

Not Dead Yet – What happens when the world best assassin tries to kill Logan? A lot of intense action

I could say origin or weapon x but to go more offbeat check out the Weapon X trade from Age of Apocalypse….Wolvie teamed with Jean Grey…and Sentinels, exploding zeppelins and weird teched out villains abound.

Finally I’d like to state yet again what a crime it is that Marvel hasn’t collected or recollected the Weapon X / Shiva storyline that gave us Wraith, Silver Fox, Maverick, Sabertooth and Wolvie teaming back up together….

(I know I know I could see that in X-Men Mutant Genesis and Team x/Team 13…but I’m greedy ok?)

Finally for your Deadpool fix, I’d go with Deadpool: The Circle Chase…just pure insanity….

Not a huge Wolverine fan, but I do pick up things that interest me on occasion.

Warren Ellis and Leinil Yu: Really enjoyed this. This was really right before Yu shot up as a superstar. This probably put him over the edge.

Steve Skroce: I always like Skroce’s artwork, but this proved he could write as well. Good stuff.

Eduardo Risso and BKV: Haven’t read this yet, but Risso and Vaughan? Gotta be good, right?

Original Claremont/Miller mini: It’s Miller and Claremont at the height of their popularity. There’s a reason they keep this in print after 20 years.

Origin: I know a lot of people didn’t like Origin, but I’m not one of them. I enjoyed it, if nothing else, for the amazing artwork.

Weapon X: Really where the whole Weapon X idea and groundwork came from.

The Death of Wolverine: Okay. I’ve only read the Jason Aaron issue of this, so I can’t really speak about the others, but that issue was pretty damn good.

Origins Vol.4: I really got this for the Captain America appearance, but it turned out to be a pretty solid story.

I haven’t read Get Mystique or Enemy of the State, but they sound pretty good. I will probably also break down eventually and get Old Man Logan.

Not sure why, but stupid WordPress didn’t like that I was trying to post links in the comment. Kept saying that my message appeared to be spam and that spam wasn’t tolerated here. Once I took them out, the comment went through. Between this and the almost constant “enable your cookies” even though they are enabled message that I get when trying to post a comment, I’m not sure why I bother.

  8. Shaun Says:

Well, the Claremont/Miller “Wolverine” miniseries is a great one to read. It’s a classic, and it’s actually aged pretty well, and it’s likely the basis for the next movie (which will, hopefully, be a better movie than this first one). Wolverine in Japan. What more do you need to know?

I also really love, and highly recommend, the Kitty Pryde & Wolverine miniseries. That serves as an excellent companion piece to the aforementioned Claremont/Miller mini. Great stuff.

Along the same lines, sort of, is the current Wolverine: First Class series. It’s all about Logan and Kitty, and while it’s really an “all ages” book it’s definitely one of the best comics out there. Definitely one my favorite reads these days, as it’s just damned fun, but it doesn’t dumb things down either. Adults can enjoy it as much as kids, maybe moreso. I’ll gladly take it over any of the dozen or so Wolverine books being published right now.

I suppose Wolverine: Origin (NOT to be confused with the ongoing “Origins” series) is a worthwhile read also. That’s definitely a bit more gory than the stuff I mentioned above, though not overly so. It’s a better origin story than the movie was!

  9. Dave Says:

“Eduardo Risso and BKV: Haven’t read this yet, but Risso and Vaughan? Gotta be good, right?

It’s not. It’s a completely insubstantial and pointless series that spends 3 issue rehashing the most obvious Wolverine plot points imaginable and reads like Vaughn dictated the entire thing over the phone in half an hour. I guess the best thing you could say about it would be that it’s vaguely competent, but really that’s only due to Risso’s presence raising it above mediocrity in any way.

As an added bonus, it costs more in trade form than it would have to buy the single issues as they came out.

  10. lilacsigil Says:

Wolverine: Origin is hilariously bad, but if you liked the movie there might be some interest there. If you liked the team stuff, you might want to look at Larry Hama’s run on Wolverine which features a lot of the characters like Wraith and Silver Fox. I have no idea if it’s in trade, though. For more recent stuff, the Enemy of the State/Agent of SHIELD 12 issue run by Millar and John Romita Jr is pretty good and contains the sheer joy of Wolverine fighting a shark.

But my #1 recommendation would be Barry Windsor Smith’s Weapon X. All the parts of the adamantium storyline that they watered down for the movie, and a true horror comic.

  11. detourne_me Says:

you mentioned before that you like Gambit.
There was a Gambit/Wolverine miniseries in the 90′s. i’m not sure how well it stands the test of time, but i remember really loving it.

  12. midKnighter Says:

Bought GET MYSTIQUE because of the buzz and felt rather disappointed. What was so good about it? All open for suggestions here. (I would recommend SCALPED though)

  13. Jamie Says:

I’d recommend Aaron’s MANIFEST DESTINY miniseries, Sarah, which — mercifully — completely ignores the somewhat ill-defined M.D. crossover, to instead drop Wolverine into Kurt Russell’s role in BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA.

  14. Lucas Siegel Says:

I’ll second Manifest Destiny (or third or fourth it or whatever), give another shout for the Claremont/Miller mini, and be all incredulous that no one has mentioned my favorite Wolverine story of all time yet, Spider-man Vs. Wolverine. It takes place in cold war Germany, and it’s SPECTACULAR (and you can borrow it from me. :D )

  15. KentL Says:

    “It’s not.”

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn’t heard a lot about this series, but assumed it was good. Also didn’t realize what the price was for the TPB in comparison to the original issues. That stinks.

Thanks for saving me some money there.

  16. Rich Says:

I’d echo Warren Ellis and Lenil Yu’s ‘Not Dead Yet’ from about ten years ago. Good, self-contained Wolverine story with no ties to the X-Men.

  19. Tom Daylight Says:

Weapon X, Weapon X, Weapon X. That’s the only Wolverine story you should be reading. It’s Barry Smith’s masterpiece. It’s an intense thriller that completely strips the character of Logan down to the bone and shows you where he comes from. All the other origin stories are basically “add-ons” to this (and I find it kind of disturbing that most people haven’t read it and think of Weapon X as being this government sponsored supervillain agency or something, which in the original book isn’t anything like that).
