I’m pretty sure this motivational poster is pretty appropriate just about now:
And the critics agree. Earning an astounding 94 percent Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes — or 64 positive reviews out of 68 — the J.J. Abrams-helmed reboot of the Star Trek franchise has been getting some critical acclaim for its fast-paced, continuity-shattering take on James Tiberius Kirk’s ascendancy to the Captain’s chair. Here’s some of the highlights from these positive reviews:
For the first time in 15 years, Star Trek actually matters.
Phil Villarreal, Arizona Daily StarThis Star Trek essentially turns out to be a war film, with the occasional philosophical timeout to discuss love, friendship, and duty until the next bone-crunching fistfight or multi-weapon rumble with the Romulans.
Bill Weber, Slant MagazineTrading on affections sustained over 40 years of popular culture, Star Trek does what a franchise reboot rarely does. It reminds us why we loved these characters in the first place.
Ty Burr, Boston GlobeYes, it’s a popcorn flick–and a first-rate one at that–but it also grants these figures a freshness they haven’t possessed in a long time.
Rob Vaux, Mania.comIf you care about this universe (and I do, damn it), you won’t sit passively through J.J. Abrams’s restart Trek. You’ll marvel at the smarts and wince at the senselessness. You’ll nitpick it to death and thrill to it anyway.
David Edelstein, New York Magazine
UPDATE: The Onion‘s review was also pretty good, too. And by good I mean backhanded and funny.
Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As ‘Fun, Watchable’
Yet, there have been a few dissenters in the ranks — most notably that grand poo-bah of reviewers, Roger Ebert, who found the film fun (with 2.5 stars) but also found its pseudo-science a bit off:
I understand the Star Trek science has never been intended as plausible. I understand this is not science fiction but an Ark movie using a starship. I understand that the character types are as familiar as your favorite slippers. But the franchise has become much of a muchness. The new movie essentially intends to reboot the franchise with younger characters and carry on as before. The movie deals with narrative housekeeping. Perhaps the next one will engage these characters in a more challenging and devious story, one more about testing their personalities than re-establishing them. In the meantime, you want space opera, you got it.
I don’t know — I oftentimes find myself agreeing with Ebert, but my reviewer sense is still stinging a bit from his four-star Watchmen review (a film I was not particularly keen on myself). I’m pretty excited to see Chris Pine swagger his way through this film — and maybe through a Green Lantern film, if the speculation is true. What say you, Rama readers? Let us know what you think of the film!

The poster is only appropriate in that it’s a reminder about who the REAL Captain Kirk is and always be… Just sayin’. I remember watching the “Jurassic Park meets Empire Strikes Back” scene that was shown during last week’s LOST and I thinking “Meh… The real Kirk would’ve stood his ground and fought the monster.” Yeah, so I’m a bitter geek. What of it?
Anyhow, I thought the Pine as GL rumors were shot down weeks ago, weren’t they? I don’t care for the guy, but I think, while he certainly wouldn’t be my first choice as Hal Jordan, he’d be better suited for a GL movie than he is for playing Kirk. I just don’t think he’ll be “the guy” in two potentially major franchises though.
I’ll have to read Ebert’s review. I generally agree with him far more often than not, but I agree with you, David, that his enthuisasm for Watchmen was surprising. But then, he made it clear he’d never read the book and I have to wonder if I might’ve liked it more if I hadn’t read, and loved, the book for two decades. But anyhow, since I’m just not the least bit excited about the Trek movie myself (my wife’s going to see it tomorrow night, but I’m sitting it out) I am curious to find out what Ebert didn’t like.

Oh, and regarding Phil Villareal’s review? First Contact was a fine movie, so he’s full of crap. Also, unless he wasn’t counting TV, he clearly never watched Deep Space Nine. That show was ALWAYS relevent. It had more social and political commentary than TNG ever did, tackling current issues in much the same way the original Trek series did back in its day.
I’ve mentioned it before, but it really is a shame DS9 never fully got its due. It was successful (running for seven seasons), and the critical acclaim grew as the series continued on, but it always lived in the shadow of the other Treks. Maybe because it was a bit darker, more serialized, and simply a more challenging show. But that’s what made it great.
BSG’s Ron Moore was one of the driving forces behind DS9, and people who enjoyed BSG should really go back and check and check DS9 out. People who didn’t give DS9 a fair chance 16 years ago should also go back and see it again. It’s too bad DS9 will never have an on-screen revival, because the potential for a return was always there.

Is Kirk the new Chuck Norris?

I’d be more excited for it if it were some unknown sci-fi movie instead of “ABRAMS TELLS THE UNTOLD STORIES OF STAR TREK!”
It looked good as a generic sci-fi movie, but I never had any interest in pre-original series continuity.

Can’t wait to see the new movie. I’m really looking forward to it!

I’m a Star Trek fan from the first season of the original series (yes, I’m that old), so the whole retconning of Star Trek TOS bothers me. I’ll probably still see the movie, but it’s not my top priority. And after TOS, I also think DS9 is brilliant. It wasn’t afraid to portray the various allied races in confict with each other, which was a more realistic view of interstellar relationships.

The new Star Trek keeps up the pace and thus keeps the audience’s attention so much better than the other Star Treks… there is something fundamentally wrong with a movie that feels like a chore to watch (like most of the other Star Treks)

I guess I’m “old school”. I prefer the original star trek series, back
in the day when doing endorsements was unheard of. But if Kirk did
do endorsements, would it be like this cartoon??
