Who is Batgirl?

May 4th, 2009
Author David Pepose

DC, via their blog the Source, has posted a preview image for a new #1 in August:

batgirlcov

But who is Batgirl?

Speculation has run rampant since the preview image of Battle for the Cowl, in which some people believe the limp hand appearing out of the coffin is none other than the current Batgirl, Cassandra Cain.

Since then, Cassandra had made herself more prominent by bringing together the team of substitute heroes known as the Network — yet original Batgirl Barbara Gordon is starring in a series known as the Cure. Even the Spoiler, aka Stephanie Brown, has returned from the comic book grave, and has been known to take over vacant superhero positions — at one point even assuming the mantle of Robin.

The use of a slightly modified version of Cassandra’s costume will certainly have readers abuzz — yet the lipstick on our heroine makes me wonder if it could possibly be the no-nonsense Cassandra under the cowl. (Or I could be quite possibly overanalyzing a simple choice in coloring.) At any rate, Newsarama readers voted last month in favor of Cassandra keeping the role of Batgirl — but only time will tell who will be hitting the streets of Gotham this August.

If it truly is Babs coming back, my girlfriend is going to crap herself.

  2. Sean Murphy Says:

I’d love for it to be Babs, but you’d think with the recent Supergirl broo-ha-ha they would avoid a shot that focused on a heroine’s chest. If the eye are a problem, put black boxes over them or something… be creative.

  3. The Crippler Says:

Certainly dosn’t look like Barbara to me, which sucks… BIG TIME! Especially after they’ve purposly teased Barbs Fans with the possibility of her return as Batgirl. You know, of all the silver age revival crap DC is forcing down our throats, the one thing they actually SHOULD bring back they don’t.

But oh well, as a kid of the 90s, when comics sill were fun, i’m kinda used to permanently getting disappointed and shown the finger by the current people in charge of DC Comics. I just hope it’s at least Steph under the mask. Otherwise, i for one have no interest at all in spending any money on this book…

  4. gia Says:

More distressingly, why has she sewn the cowl to her face?

(Disclaimer: I’m a manga nerd, not a comics fan, so please do not behead me and do terrible things to my neck stump if I’m just missing something here.)

  5. EvolutionAngel Says:

I would like to bring up the notion that Babs’ true fans are the ones who love her as Oracle where she has far exceeded her days at Batgirl :)

Hope it’s Stephanie Brown. She got a bad hand dealt to her, she needs some redeeming as a character.

  6. avengingtitan Says:

As long as its not Babs. Shes a much better character as Oracle. Although I think thats Spoiler in there which is almost as if its Babs. She should have stayed dead.

  7. RobRG Says:

I’d like to see Stephanie as the new Batgirl, never liked Cassandra Cain and Oracle it’s great as it is.

  8. Matt Says:

@gia: I think there used to be some fabric there that covered up the whole face, so now it’s gone, but loose stitches from where it was removed remain.

I personally like the idea of having both Superboy and Batgirl back! I’m curious how they might now interact with Supergirl, Robin, and even Wonder Girl.

  9. rwe1138 Says:

Babs as Oracle > Babs as Batgirl

  10. Korbindai Says:

I seriously hope this isn’t the Spoiler mooching the Batgirl mantle. DC’s really screwed over Cassandra’s character and there needs to be a chance to redeem that. Making the Spoiler Batgirl is like making Jamie Kennedy Superman. It’s just not a good idea.

But the mask is kinda funny. It’s still got the stitches even though the mouth is showing. It’s probably a doctored pic just to through people off.

  11. Wolfbrother Says:

While I wouldn’t mind seeing Barbara back as Batgirl, I like her as Oracle too. Instead of giving us a new Batgirl, let’s just have some more development on Cassandra. She’s not a bad character, she just needs some TLC.

I see Barbara as being invaluable to the DC Universe as Oracle. Of course, they could get her back on her feet AND have her remain Oracle. Just give her a costume so she could be more active.

  12. Barry Says:

Mixed feelings about Babs potentially being Batgirl again. In a universe filled with Dr. Fate, the Spectre, Zatanna, etc., the notion that no one could just magically repair her legs is ludicrous to me. Having said that, I like her being Oracle and I like having a hero that’s in a wheelchair. So I dunno. I never liked Cassandra, though. I’d prefer this to be Stephanie, personally.

  13. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

To repeat my comment from the boards, this may well be a take on the I AM BATMAN tagline, and we may see SEVERAL people in the Batgirl suit(s). Ironically, there’s a bit more mystery there, as there’s less for-sure-ness about WHO will be in the suit when the smoke clears.

And just to stir the pot…Who else do we know from the bat-books who stitches faces together? Female, mentioned in the BftC books?

    Jane Doe.

  14. Nicholas Post Says:

It is Barbara. She could only smile like this.

  15. PyroTwilight Says:

Many interesting possibilities here. The background color is evocative of Spoiler’s outfit color but they may have done that to throw us off. She’s a pretty likely bet though given her close friendship with Stephanie.

Of course I can’t see Cassandra willingly giving up the Bat-mantle unless something catastrophic happens so here’s hoping they don’t off my generations Batgirl.

  16. The Crippler Says:

    @ EvolutionAngel

If you ask me, the term “true fans” is pretty stupid. From my point of view, it’s something that’s mostly used by people who have a different opionion one or more aspects of a character than others and therefore telling them, they’re no true fans.

Anyway, as for the whole telling Barbs as Batgirl fans (if you’re okay with that term ;) ) about how they should be glad that her character has evolved into something unique. I seriously doubt that people who are saying that would feel the same way if one of the characters they love the way it is, even if it dosn’t make it all that unique, would be crippled and fundamentally changed into something completely different.

When i started reading comics, Barbs was still Batgirl (not for long, but she was) and i loved reading her in that role, while i never quite enjoyed her as much as Oracle. That’s why i want her back. That’s why Hal and Barry fans wanted them back as Green Lantern and Flash, even through Hal, in a IMO pretty cool turn of events, had become Parallax and Barrys dead meant more to the DCU than his return ever could. That’s why Kyle and Wally fans (like me) have a problem with the fact, that predecessors are back, even through they’re still active as Lantern and Flash, which is more than i can say for Barbs. Kinda see where i’m comming from?

  17. rme Says:

I wonder how much milage they could get if: “The Cure” gives Barbara temporary use of her legs upon use of some elixir or whatnot. Barbara maintains her status as Oracle to most the the DCU, but secretly masquarades as Batgirl upon use of said elixir. Although a bit too M.A.N.T.I.S.-like I suppose.

  18. PhoenixPhan Says:

It’s Misfit. She’d have that strewn-together look for a costume.

  19. Madame Rogue Says:

Its Tim Drake. That’s why the girlish face has been sown on, to disguise the fact that the new Batgirl is really a guy in drag.

    And s/he’ll be Batwoman’s sidekick.

  20. SouthtownKid Says:

The mask is stitched to her face? Or is that a fake mouth and nose stitched onto her mask, Texas Chainsaw Massacre-style?

Either way, it looks very weird, despite the drawing and coloring themselves being nice.

  21. Ryan Says:

I just think it would be really odd for Babs to be BatGIRL while some new chick is BatWOMAN. I’d like to see it as Casandra. Part of me would love tom see Babs back in the bat, but logically she does FAR more good as Oracle than she would in some tights kicking people. It kinda feels like Dick putting the green spedo on again…

  22. Manolis Says:

well, it sure aint Misfit cos i cant see any freckles. i’d love to see stephanie as batgirl, with cassandra and babs as her mentors

  23. Adam Says:

I’m going with Cassandra and Barbara being her mentor again, I think Cassandra was dealt such a bad hand by OYL later that she kind of deserves the chance again

  24. RavenProject Says:

@Ryan “…logically she does FAR more good as Oracle than she would in some tights kicking people.”

You bring up an interesting point! I think there’s a popular association out there that if Barbara’s mobility were restored, she would take up the cowl again. This isn’t necessarily the case.

There a several candidates for Batgirl. But if Barbara were ever to give up being Oracle, there’s almost* no one capable of taking up the role. Babs is too practical to waste her own potential lie that.

    -J

    * – Tim Drake. Maybe.

  25. Jorg Says:

She totally looks like Stephanie in Cass’ costume, just lok at this stupid smile and color theme. Godddamit, screw you, DC!

  26. Bloodmage Says:

    @The Crippler

Well, suppose that you were in a wheelchair yourself, and a comic reader. Is there really anyone for you to relate to other than Oracle? Professor X can walk again, so he’s out, and he’s a jerk half the time anyway. Other than that, who is there? Here you have a character whose whole life revolved around running, jumping, and what not as Batgirl. She loses the use of her limbs and rather than sulk and become bitter about it, she overcomes her new limitations and doesn’t look for the easy out. She’s a very inspirational character to a lot of disabled readers. My ex-gf LOVES Oracle, because as someone who lost the use of her legs, she has this character she can relate to.

And also, as Oracle, Barbara Gordon was JLA-worthy. Do you think she’d ever have made the cut as Batgirl?

  27. jedifish Says:

I think, based on the Oracle mini-series, that the Calculator will cure his daughter, and Wendy Smith will take over the role as Batgirl.

  28. Daredoll Says:

As much as I want it to be Babs….I think it might either be Bette Kane [she was Bat-Girl to Kathy Kane's Batwoman back in the day...] or Spoiler.

Misfit is way too much of a long shot.

  29. Spike Says:

How can you say it looks like BABS…all they showed was a nose and mouth…and even that is done “plainly’. It looks as much like STEPHANIE as Babs. Or heck..it could be Cassandra for that matter… nothing about the picture points or LEANS to one specific character.

  30. Warren Says:

The stitching reminds me a bit of Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and since her series ended not too long ago… maybe? Although she is going to be in Sirens…

  31. Scarecrow Says:

I have a strong feeling that it’s Steph from the teaser. The cowl bulges in the back a bit (extra hair?), she’s always been a full mask wearer so the edited Cassandra-version costume would be fitting, and the lipstick isn’t out of play for her.

I think it kind of makes sense for her to move up. With a general second-generation-moving up thing going on with Dick/Jason/Tim, Babs kind of falls into an elder-type role. I think Cassandra’s in trouble, though.

  32. Joe H Says:

    Bat-Boobs GO!

  33. Cisco Kid Says:

I’m saying this is a red herring and the real version will be Babs classic outfit. Remember the Nightwing Origins and Omens with him kissing Babs Batgirl?

  34. The Crippler Says:

    @ Bloodmage

Would you like to see your favorite character in a wheelchair so the let’s say 5 % of the comic book readers who are actually in a wheelchair themselfs can relate? And honestly, if you’re in a wheelchair, do you really need to have a fictional character who’s also in a wheelchair to be able to relate? I know i can relate to fictional characters, that don’t have 1:1 the same attributes that i’ve got. I mean, it’s comics… with all the fantastic context, they’re more about symbolism to me than everything else. HOW characters deal with these situations we would never find ourselfs in is what makes them relatable to me, not so much the situations they’re dealing with.

Aside from that, why is everyone assuming that if she’d be able to walk again, it would mean she would lose all the abilities she has as Oracle? She could still do all those things, would have her computer skills and be the communicating system for the DCU heroes and all that, BUT would also be able to fight her own fights instead of needing the Birds of Prey doing it for her.

  35. Erin Says:

I’d like it to be Cass again as she made an excellent Batgirl before she got a real raw deal. Steph, I’d be okay with. Wendy would be really cool potentially, on Super Friends she was supposed to be one of the every man characters that found themselves with heroes. Now she could be working with Oracle against her dad, Oracles’ enemy.

I won’t read it if it’s Babs, I’m just not interested in her as Batgirl anymore. I feel she outgrew the role.

  36. Absolutely Huge Nuts Says:

    Selina Kyle!!

  37. Likeaphoenix Says:

Ewwwwwwww, the mask is sewn onto her face?? SICKO! Is this Catwoman dressing up as Batgirl?

  38. Likeaphoenix Says:

    Muhshell PuhPiffuh that is!

  39. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

“Aside from that, why is everyone assuming that if she’d be able to walk again, it would mean she would lose all the abilities she has as Oracle?”

Because the current Action Line of the easily disgruntled Internet fan is that Dan Didio wants to drag the DCU kicking and screaming back to the Silver Age, one character at a time, so it would once again be the safe and wonderful land that he loved as a child before his girlfriends started dumping him. And no amount of facts to the contrary will shift that.

Except, apparently, for Ted Kord. But he’s just the exception that proves the rule.

I dunno about anyone else, but the number of “Leave Babs Oracle” posts FAR exceeds the “Babs as Batgirl” posts. “The people who want Babs back” are like “New comics readers” – often discussed, rarely seen.

  40. Hellstone Says:

    The Crippler:
“Would you like to see your favorite character in a wheelchair so the let’s say 5 % of the comic book readers who are actually in a wheelchair themselfs can relate?”

I can relate to the character of Oracle even though I’m not in a wheelchair, not a crimefighter, not a woman, not a redhead, I don’t wear glasses, and I’m not an American. (I am a librarian, though.)

The idea that one can only relate to characters that share your superficial characteristics (gender, skin color, nationality, religion) is a popular, but completely ridiculous, myth.

That nonwithstanding, I prefer Babs as Oracle over her going back to becoming a Batman derivate.

  41. The Crippler Says:

    Vinnie Bartilucci
“I dunno about anyone else, but the number of “Leave Babs Oracle” posts FAR exceeds the “Babs as Batgirl” posts. “The people who want Babs back” are like “New comics readers” – often discussed, rarely seen.”

People with a certain point of view are kinda always acting like that is the genernal opinion, just like you’re doing here. As far as i can see, it’s pretty much balanced in that case, for everyone who says Barbs should be Batgirl again, there is someone who thinks she should remain in the Oracle role. Not only as far as board-, blogposts and so on goes, but also according to polls and stuff. Which is actually kinda fascinating, if you think about it. I mean, cause of how many people never really read Barbs as Batgirl one would assume that Cass should be able beat her pretty easily, like Wally does with Barry for example, but even if she does it’s only slightly.

Anyway, as far as the back to silver age stuff goes, aside from Barbs being able to walk again, which within the DCU should logically happen sooner or later and wouldn’t take anything away from her abilities but only give her more, i agree with you there. DC creaters seem to have the strong desire to relieve their childhood instead of acutally being original, forgetting the age of a big part of their non silver age revival appreciative taget audiance in the process.

Annd Hellstone, you’re completely getting me wrong. The relatability thing wasn’t my idea, i was only answering to it, as you can pretty much figure from the rest of my post.

  42. Kel-El Says:

Why would ANYBODY want Barbara back in the Batgirl uniform?
    That’s total character regression!
Should we expect Dick Grayson to pull back on his Robin togs?

    Please!

  43. Michael Says:

If you ask me just keep Batman and Robin as well as Nightwing get rid of everyone else

  44. J.R. Says:

It isn’t stitched to her face. The mouth part of Cass’s costume was ripped off and the stitches are hanging down.

  45. devilguy Says:

I’m really not sure who this is but I’ve got a feeling it’s not Cassandra. Didn’t she just recently have a mini that didn’t sell great? I’m thinking this is either Stephanie or Barbara.

  46. Misto1481 Says:

I have a feeling it’s going to be Wendy, the Calculator’s daughter.

  47. Hipkarma Says:

Newbie poster. I’ve read Babs as Batgirl, I’ve read the entire run of BoP. Not everyone chooses to post regularly.

It’s not credible in the DCU as it stands, that Babs is still in a wheelchair. Nor does it follow that if she can walk again, that she would choose to don the cowl.

Still, after all she has been through, Babs deserves both mobility and the choice of how to define her future insofar as to cowl or not to cowl.

  48. Ace Says:

My guess is Spoiler. My hope is Barbara!

  49. whothewhatthe Says:

There are too many freaking bat-characters. What fucking purpose does this new Batwoman serve if you already have a Batgirl, whoever she is. Enough already.

And David, you must have special optical powers if you see her wearing lipstick in this art.

  50. AO Says:

    Obviously Wolverine.

  51. AO Says:

Seriously though, to the people concerned that the mask is attached to her face, it’s not. It’s Cassandra’s outfit and there has always been a small piece of the costume that has covered her mouth that is attached with those little straps. That small “mouthmask” is missing, but obviously the straps were included in the image for artistic or other reasons.

  52. Dalarsco Says:

@The Crippler: Why does a Babs fan have to want her back as Batgirl? She’s found her own unique and important role as Oracle. Walking or no walking she should keep that role.

  53. Matt Says:

It’d be retarded for Babs to take over as Batgirl. BatGIRL. Why would Babs, who is far from a girl, return as Batgirl? Comparatively, Dick is going to be the actual BatMAN.

There’s a Batwoman that now looks EXACTLY like Babs in her Batgirl costume which would make Babs’ return as Batgirl even more embarrassing. Its laughable. Won’t happen.

Its down to Steph or Cass. I think its going to be Steph. Cass is probably going to die and Steph will step up to carry on in Cass’ memory… :(

  54. Herowatcher Says:

lipstick, hands on hips (posing) …. I’d love it to be Bette Kane. She deserves the spotlight and the mantle …if only for a time. That would be cool!

  55. Dom Says:

    Bette Kane for Batgirl!

  56. misterclock Says:

Batgirl is probably Barbara Gordon, but only temporarily. Does anyone remember a movie called ‘Awakenings’, starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro? Well, Barbara Gordon would be playing the part of Leonard Lowe, with the exception of Babs being paralyzed instead of being in a coma.

  57. Statham Says:

Why the HELL is everyone suggesting the damn mask is sown into her face?

Cass’ costume in the past had a mouthpiece sown over her jaw (because she didn’t speak initially, or at least, not too well), and this is clearly that costume, just with the mouthpiece torn off. It’s loose stitching, it isn’t sown into her face.

Also, regarding the main article – ‘Even the Spoiler, aka Stephanie Brown, has returned from the comic book grave, and has been known to take over vacant superhero positions’ ? What? She played Robin for about four or five issues, in the Robin series and in other books, and that was it.

  58. Wilbur Lunch Says:

Unless the new Batgirl is Yvonne Craig, I just don’t care.

  59. charles david haskell Says:

I AM HOPPING THAT THE BATGIRL WILL MADE A COMEBACK AS A TRUE HEROINES WHO CAN HANDLE HERSELF IN ANY CRISIS. IT WOULD WOULD BE NICE IF BARBARA GORDON’S ORACLE WOULD GET HER OWN COMICS BOOK AND STAR WITH THE BATGIRL AS A ALLIES. HOW ABOUT A TEAM-UP WITH SUPERGIRL AND BATGIRL OR SUPERGIRL AND POWER GIRL. GOOD LUCK WHEN THE BATGIRL TAKE OFF HER MASK AND SHOW WHAT SHE LOOK LIKE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL

  60. Matt Says:

I actually think it would be kind of cool if it was Catwoman (Selina Kyle). Honoring Bruce’s “memory” until his eventual return.

  61. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

“Unless the new Batgirl is Yvonne Craig, I just don’t care.”

Looking at that pair, she might be.

  62. The Crippler Says:

    @ Dalarsco

I think i’ve already answered that:

“Anyway, as for the whole telling Babs as Batgirl fans (if you’re okay with that term ;) ) about how they should be glad that her character has evolved into something unique. I seriously doubt that people who are saying that would feel the same way if one of the characters they love the way it is, even if it dosn’t make it all that unique, would be crippled and fundamentally changed into something completely different.

Kinda see where i’m comming from?”

And that’s what it comes down’t to really, what we enjoy reading. I think everything else, justifing justifying stuff with more logical and neutral arguments can always be done either way, but still is just based on nothing more than what you personally like.

  63. Greg Says:

Would love to see Barbara back as Batgirl! I’d actually be interested in the Batman books again.

  64. glutamate Says:

Wilbur Lunch said: “Unless the new Batgirl is Yvonne Craig, I just don’t care.”

Apparently, you do. You cared enough to post on a blog you pretend to no care about…. Poser…

  65. foxhound Says:

wont care/read/pay attention unless its barbara

  66. YotaruVegeta Says:

I’m going with misfit as well. Where does Misfit have her freckles?

I don’t see Barbara Gordon being Batgirl- at least not THIS Batgirl. I think Spoiler is a more believable candidate for Batgirl, though.
