CHUCK Finale: Season, or Series??

When you’re a show on the bubble and your season’s about to wrap, it’s good to give the fans something tasty that they can savor for awhile. The season (don’t make me say series, NBC) finale of Chuck was pretty darn successful at doing just that. This final, wedding-based episode did a terrific job of tying up loose ends and giving certain characters some new direction without really closing the door on anything in a finite way. This is in no way meant to be an Post Game-style episode recap (so spoiler shields up) to get you up to speed, this is for the faithful viewers who watched Chuck this week and hope that the line “I know Kung Fu” is only the start of something special.

So, as is found in many season finales, much resolution came in the penultimate episode with Chuck (Zach Levi) no longer hosting the intersect and now ready to get on with his life. He declined an invitation by the government to use his skill set on their payroll, much to Casey’s disappointment (Adam Baldwin’s return to his old gig with a bunch of likeminded bros was a hoot too), but he’s at least ready to say “take this job and shove it” to the Buy More (was this Emmett’s coming out of the closet, in his one scene in the episode?). Nice to see that his BFF Morgan was still on the same page as Chuck in moving out of electronics retail and going to pursue his dream of hibachi cuisine.

Since the government made him flush with cash for services rendered, I was hoping to see Chuck have an actual big idea with what to do with the money, but he was thinking short term with his sister’s wedding and a beach getaway with Sarah (oh, and I CANNOT watch a scene with Sarah Lancaster as Ellie without thinking that she is the second coming of Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman). Having such a gift for breaking Chuck’s heart all season, of course Sarah got in at least one more opportunity, but I’m glad she saw the light and decided to pass on a whole new intersect mission with Bryce (alas, Bryce, I hardly knew ye).

All the network previews suggested that virtually everything took place at Ellie’s church wedding, so it was a surprise to see it only occupy the show’s first half to allow for plenty more plot development. Chevy Chase, while unsuccessful at getting the intersect from Chuck, made up for that by ruining the ceremony, all the while making it look like all Chuck’s bad. Last episode, with everything that happened at the abandoned drive-in movie theater, reminded me of Spies Like Us, and despite an invaluable turn in recent weeks by Scott Bakula, how hilarious would it have been to cast Dan Aykroyd as Chuck and Ellie’s dad? Fitz-Hume and Millbarge reunited!

But after a sweet do-over with the wedding, all thanks to the hero, how about the ending? A payoff for the ages! The creators of Chuck have been so patient with the titular character all season making sure to keep him out of the same league as Casey and Sarah, what he did when he was forced back into the role of intersect had my wife and I rolling, that was when we weren’t choked up with pride for our hero. If things end now, shame on NBC for their lack of commitment to well-rounded, inspired programming. In the same token, leaving fans cheering is rarely a bad way to go.

And am I the only one with “Mr. Roboto” still in my head? What say YE, Chuck fans?

MORE MORE MORE!! Loved the finale, but I want it to be a SEASON finale, not a series finale.

Here: http://chucktv.net/about-2/chuck-campaign-watchbuyshare/ you can find ways to help save Chuck.

Great episode and I loved the ending. Hope it comes back. It’s one of my favorite shows on tv right now.

  3. Alex Agostini Says:

“Chuck” must continue. I echo the words “MORE!!!!” NBC, please renew “Chuck” for another season.

I LOVE Chuck – it is such an awesome show. I can’t believe they are even whispering the word ‘cancelled’. Why doesn’t NBC consider giving it a timeslot that isn’t ratings-suicide?

No such thing as ratings suicide. I’m dating myself here, but I remember a time when Thursday at 8 was dominated by Magnum PI. That is, it was until Dr. Cliff Huxtable and family moved in next door. There is no timeslot that can’t be won by the right programming.

That being said, this is a show that deserves NBC’s support. It is (was?) easily my favorite show on the major networks.

I just read where on NBC’s site they “accidently” called Monday’s episode a “series” finale, before taking the article down and correcting it.

Oh, well. We’ll find out Chuck’s fate in a couple of weeks. The networks announce their fall schedules in the first few weeks of May.

  6. Sector 2814 Says:

I hate to use this phrase, but Chuck is “the best show that no one is watching”. The season finale was amazing and a perfect way to finish up the season. Not to mention i don’t think i’ve ever wanted to see two people get together more in my life. To cancel this show would be a travesty. I really hope this “talk” is rumor and nothing more…the world needs more Chuck.

  7. Horace Says:

NBC announces their fall schedule on Monday.

  8. RavenProject Says:

pastrygems: Why was the Monday slot “ratings suicide,” and what would you consider a more viable timeslot?

The whole “to be continued” thing makes it hard to believe it would be the series finale. And also the fact that chuck has finally realized that he is a spy, tells us that the show might be around for a bit. But how are its ratings? Are people actually watching the show?

  10. Samurai Says:

Chuck has to be back next season. They can’t leave us hanging after that awesome end, they just can’t. Can they? Well yeah but here’s hoping not. More Chuck! More Chuck! please?

  11. Daryll B Says:

‘Guys…I know Kung Fu’ has to be one of the freshest cliche’d moments in TV history….Looks like they sent Zach to the same dojo Kris Kreuk went to for ‘Chun Li’

Let’s just say that according to the 2 ’season’ finales.. Chuck stepped up BIGTIME while that other show spit the bit….

  12. Helios Says:

One he best, if not the best season ( series ) finale ive seen… How can they end a serie like this with such an ending, love chuck one of my favourite series, more chuck pls :D

  13. Robert Frost Says:

The Monday slot is “ratings suicide” because it is up against powerhouses “House” and “Dancing with the Stars”. Wednesday would be a good place for it because there is absolutely nothing on Wednesdays except “South Park”.

  14. Stephen B Says:

No, the best show no one is watching is Kings. And NBC really followed through with that. But they really need to keep Monday night around (sans Medium. WTF NBC?)

  15. Joe G. Says:

Robert Frost, nothing on on Wednesdays? What about a little show called LOST? I know it’s not the megabeast that it once was, but it still has a loyal following (among whom are I’m sure the creators of CHUCK – remember when Chuck flashed on Oceanic Flight 815?). Perhaps a more accurate statement would be to say that there’s nothing on on NBC on Wednesdays.

That said, moving CHUCK to Wednesdays at 8 would be fantastic, and would make a nice two hours of television between that and LOST, which I know is not NBC’s prerogative, but whatever. One can hope, right?

  16. Gerry Alanguilan Says:

Chuck’s season finale was just brilliant. I wish NBC would allow it to continue. Although the series could conceivably end right there, continuing it would be the best option, what with all the interesting new directions that have been laid out. What incredible potential. It would be a shame if the producers don’t get to pursue it, and we don’t get to see and enjoy it.

  17. jedifish Says:

Yeah, but Lost is on at 9pm, and it’s only on in the Winter (I believe). Wednesday at 8 would be good for Chuck.

Heck, I’d love to check out Big Bang Theory, but I can only DVR House and Chuck at 8, and then I’ve got to DVR Heroes and 24 at 9. Monday’s just have a lot of good action/genre shows.

  18. Robert Frost Says:

I could never understand the logic of the TV programmers, whom, two years ago, put “Chuck”, “Big Bang Theory”, and “Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles” all on at the same time – when they all have the exact same target audience. All three suffered because of it.
