Paul Pope reveals Adam Strange feature

April 27th, 2009
Author David Pepose

As you may have read a few weeks back, DC Comics Art Director Mark Chiarello, the mastermind behind Wednesday Comics, had alluded to Paul Pope doing a “1950s style sci-fi strip.” As soon as he said that, we’ve all been waiting for this:

Straight from the Batman: Year 100 creator’s Flickr feed, a page of the upcoming Adam Strange adventure in Wednesday Comics. Pope has already made some big splashes in the past, not just with Year 100 but also with a prequel comic for the upcoming Star Trek film, which appeared in Wired Magazine.

Wednesday Comics, a 12-issue weekly series printed on newspaper-sized broadsheets, will be out in stores July 2009.

  2. Mark Engblom Says:

This thing just keeps getting better and better. Apparently they’re charging $4 for it….which judging from the quality I’ve seen so far, is a pretty good deal.

So…put me down int he “can’t wait” camp as well.

  3. William Says:

When, when, when, is this supposed to be out in July? What week?
    P.S. Me likey.

  4. Hourman1941 Says:

Chiarello is just fantastic. I only wish his ego was huge and he had given one of the pages in this thing to himself to do.

  5. Dan Says:

Wednesday Comics will arrive in stores folded twice to 7″ x 10″.

16 pages, $3.99, in stores on July 8, July 15, July 22 and July 29.

    Whats matter, Rob?
16 pages, true but, way over sized.

  9. Debaser Says:

Rob, you’re a moron. Every single page of Wednesday comics is a broad sheet that is 4x larger than the average comic page.

  10. Cartoon Jay Says:

Looks fantastic! Wednesday Comics will be the first superhero book I buy in over a decade. Really looking forward to it.

  11. Anthony Schiavino Says:

But what I want to know what kind of stock it’s printed on. Because it’s 4 times the price of a newspaper. I expect it to be better than newsprint but $4.99 is pretty steep when you’re talking about whether or not the average person can afford yet another comic. Being an Art Director at an actual newspaper I tried to see if I could get this into our paper on Wednesday. I thought it was a no brainer. But the cost just isn’t feasible I guess.

I thought it would get into the hands of many more people as well as give newspaper sales a boost. If anyone at DC wants to get in touch with me just stop on over to the website where my email is posted.

oh boy, keeps getting better…not even DiDio’s contribution is going to stop me from buying this…

  13. SouthtownKid Says:

    Paul Pope never disappoints…

That Star Trek comic is awesome, as well.

Pope’s Adam Strange looks reeeally nice!!
Wished he could do a bi-monthly comic that looks this good.
Some of the talent for Wednesday Comics are outstanding.
I wished DC could hire many of them for on-going books… quality artists like this are a wonderful gift to us.

I so wish that many of them would do on-going titles.
I’d love to see Joe Kubert …with a great writer… do Hawkman, again.
Or just about any of the artists involved in this project would really add to the world of comics in a big way…if they would do on-going series…based on this Project.

Not crazy, personally, about Paul Pope. Terrific ideation, wonderful layouts, unpretty people. Give me a Carmine Infantino or a Steve Rude for the latter, any day. Still, it IS Adam Strange, and that’s very good.

And it’s amusing, as someone else said, that, when you click on the graphic, it creates a window that blows it up—TO EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE!!

  16. BigBandit Says:

Looks cool. I think I’m in.

  17. Cæu Zokul Says:

    SAY YOU Tony Schiavino!

I waited a day to post this, thinking someone else might correct your belief that DCWC was five bucks, but I guess it falls to me to say: hey man, it’s only 3.99! Give the first issue a try and then pass judgment. Also you could put off getting something from the bottom of your pull list for a week (no matter how short your weekly stack is).

Every week reveals new reasons to drop the dead wood from my list and get this. I think if I drop one more weak title, I’ll be able to get that second copy to pass on to others. I’m thinking it’ll ge worth it in the long run.
