Line-By-Line: Adding to the Pull List?

April 27th, 2009
Author Troy Brownfield

On Friday, I posted regarding the notion of trimming titles from your regular budget. Throughout the conversation that followed, a number of salient points were raised on many sides of the issue. Upon reflection, we thought that it was only fair to pose the converse question.

That is: in the past several months (let’s say, since October, as the big economic freak-out began), have you actually added any books to your regular buying patterns?

We all know that it’s a tough decision to drop a book, but adding one can be perplexing too, particular in the face of a) rising costs or b) potentially needing to drop a book to create space in your budget.

So, let’s hear from you. Is it all subtraction, or have you made some pick-ups as well?

66 Responses to “Line-By-Line: Adding to the Pull List?”
  1. Ken B. Says:

    The Literals and World of New Krypton, those are about it.

  2. Shaun Says:

    No new ongoing books, unless Mark Waid’s Irredeemable is an ongoing? I was the under the impression that it’s a miniseries, but either way I’m in for the full ride. Brubaker’s Incognito mini, DC’s The Mighty miniseries, and that’s it for new floppies. Whenever Top Cow starts a new Madame Mirage story I’ll be on board for that one too, as I thought the first miniseries was great.

    As I stated in the “drop” talkback, I’m just more about trades these days. I’m still working my through Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina both in trade form, picking up the next trade of one or the other every few weeks, savoring the Vaughan experiences like fine wines. I might have to start reading Brubaker’s Criminal, again in trade form.

    Nothing I’ve dropped, and it’s been a lot lately, is anything that I feel like reading anymore. Even in trade. If I end up dumping Green Lantern, however, I might swtich to trades on the book. It’s all going to depend on how I feel about the book after Blackest Night, I guess.

  3. KentL Says:

    I added Agents of Atlas and the G.I. Joe books.

    I’ll get the Muppet Show books as long as Roger Landridge is working on them.

  4. michael Says:

    I also have added mainly new minis. No new ongoing titles. Besides the addition of Incognito, myself, I have been intrigued by the possibilities this Dark Reign storyline for Marvel might entail. So There are a few minis that I’m planning to get surrounding that. Particularly Dark Reign: The Sinister Spider-Main, Dark Reign: Hawkeye, and possibly Dark Reign: zodiac.
    Cheers,

  5. Chris Says:

    I find it hard to drop books. The only books I have dropped in the last several months are all because they ended. Blue Beetle, Spider-girl, and various mini-series.

    I may eventually have to cut short some of what I collect, but not for the time being. That being said, some of the books I have recently started to pick up are:

    Detective Comics
    Sherlock Holmes
    Flash: Rebirth
    Deadpool and all the new series he’s in that are here/starting up

    I know there’s more I’m missing, but these are the main ones.

  6. Matt Says:

    After collecting comics since I was in 5th grade (I am now 28) I have stopped buying comics altogether.

    Increasing prices to $3.99 a book had a little bit to do with it. But it was more that in order to get a complete storyline now you are required to basically buy every book Marvel/DC put out.

    You can look at any of the recent solicits and you’ll see just about every Marvel book has a tie-in to Dark Reign. If you want the full Blackest Night story, not only do you need to pick up both GL books, but now you have to get the Main mini-series and the 5-6 spin-off series.

    I do not only want to read part of a story, I want the full experience, but that is too many books to buy per month, I have other things I need to spend money on right now.

  7. juss Says:

    I thought I’d give Oeming’s “Rapture” a try. Likewise Waid’s “Unknown.” I’m starting to get “Action” for the Captain Atom co-feature, and “Power Girl,” provisionally for now. I’m also giving “Savage Dragon” another try; I float in and out with that title, because while I *think* what I really like is “good, old-fashioned superhero comics,” and that is exactly what SD is, I keep failing to make a deep and earnest connection with the character and his universe. But I do admire the Kirby-like art, and Erik Larsen’s devotion to doing his best, and that too on a regular basis. So we’ll see.

    There are no quibbles about “Wednesday Comics,” though; I’m picking that up without hesitation.

  8. Simon DelMonte Says:

    I’m trying REBELS. It’s okay but the jury is still out as to whether the story will come together for me.

    And I will be adding Wednesday Comics, The Unwritten, Detective, Streets of Gothams, Sirens of Gotham and Batman & Robin. Also waiting to see who is assigned the new Flash monthly.

  9. Spacedog2k5 Says:

    As much as I love Robert Kirkman’s ‘Invincible’, I found myself dropping it after Issue 51. No longer was as thrilled to read each issue as I was – not sure if it was the lateness in issues or what, but it definitely was not the same.

    I’ve dropped all DC books, except for ‘Secret Six’ (dear God, I wish Gail Simone was Editor instead of that death-dealing schnook Dan Didio!) and ‘Fables’ tpb’s. ‘Secret Six’, while at times violent, is not so over-the-top or laden in its own angst-just-for-the-sake-of-it feeling that Didio has encouraged in the other books under his own “dark reign”).

    Marvel? I am teetering on dropping ‘X-Men:Legacy’, but I am really liking ‘The Incredible Herc’. Favorite Marvel title over the last 10 years! So much fun, and the writing is just that good.

    Outside of that? Indy, indy, indy! Sure, the books can cost a few pennies more than what DC or Marvel are offering, but at least it’s variety, and not just gloom ‘n’ doom.

  10. Josh2814 Says:

    I recently added Green Lantern Corps to round out my Green Lantern addiction. I’ve been planning on picking up Blackest Night for awhile now, and since I’ve recently dropped other books I can now afford to pick up all of the tie-ins. I’m also considering Wednesday Comics since I just can’t see that coming out in any kind of trade.

  11. Kyle Says:

    i’ve added some of the upcoming bat books, like Gotham City Sirens, Batman and Robin and Detective comics, since i wasn’t picking up any bat books before. But i caught up on them in trade.

    but over the last 6 months i’ve been dropping marvel books and adding DC books.

  12. Phil Says:

    I’ve picked up some books that have been new books – Literals, World of New Krypton, Flash: Rebirth, etc. The only ongoing I’ve added is Outsiders, and it’s very much on the bubble for how long it sticks around.

  13. Duke Harrington Says:

    Titles/one shots added
    Action Comics Annual
    Adventure Comics
    Batman #686 (special order)
    Batman and Robin
    Batman – Brave and the Bold (dropped with #6)

    Detective Comics (with #854)
    Fables #83-85 (special order)
    Final Crisis Secret Files
    The Flash – Rebirth
    Green Lantern (with #40)
    Guardians of Metropolis (became Adventure Comics Special)
    Jack of Fables #33-35 (special order)
    JSA Kingdom Come Specials (Magog, Kingdom, Superman)

    Wednesday Comics

    Titles dropped
    Brave and the Bold (last issue #24)
    Trinity (last issue #17)
    Legion of Super-Heroes (series canceled)

    Still waiting on
    Ambush Bug Year None #6
    Legion of Three Worlds #4
    The Twelve #9

  14. "The Guvnor" Paul C Says:

    Just ‘Incognito’, although that’s basically a straight switch for ‘Criminal’ while that takes a break.

    Honestly, it’s just hard to get excited enough by Marvel’s current output to take the plunge on some new additions and their insistence of $4 price tags just makes it harder.

  15. ScottyQuick Says:

    I’ll be adding some of the upcoming Bat books as well. Streets of Gotham solely because of the Manhunter co-feature, Gotham City Sirens out of Harley <3, and ‘Tec because I don’t hate myself.

  16. Jim Kosmicki Says:

    Batman Brave and the Bold for my 12 year old (and me!)
    Agents of Atlas
    Wednesday Comics

  17. Nick Says:

    I added Dark Avengers but dropped Mighty Avengers to balance it out. I’ve dropped other books as well and don’t see any others getting added anytime soon.

  18. Jesse Blaze Snider Says:

    Just wanted to say thank you to all of those who added

    DEAD ROMEO

    during these difficult times, I won’t let you down! =)

    Sincerely,
    Writer Jesse Blaze Snider

  19. Yowza Says:

    No drops for me. I may drop the G.I. Joe titles from IDW if they don’t hold my interest, but I haven’t dropped anything else.

  20. Yowza Says:

    Oops…forgot to add the “added” titles. I am going to give DE’s Buck Rogers a shot. And I will probably also try out the new Batman and Robin title at DC.

  21. Alexa Says:

    I added Secret Warriors, but I may drop that just because the story hasn’t grabbed me yet. Secret Six I’ve been picking up since day 1 and nothing will take it away from me– if I could only buy one comic a month, it would be Secret Six. Even if I was homeless on the street, I would save my change until I had the $3, and only then would I think about eating. Seriously, I love Secret Six.

    I’ve been getting the Marvel 70th anniversary books, because I love the Golden Age.

    I will be adding Power Girl, Gotham City Sirens, Streets of Gotham, and Detective Comics. Also, Wednesday Comics intrigue me. But with all these additions, I may end up dropping JSA if Willingham doesn’t deliver the goods the way Johns did.

  22. DarthProzac Says:

    The only books that I have added is Dark Avngers and War of Kings. But War of Kings is on the bubble. I am only into the X-Men portions of the story. I was never into the Inhumans or the the Kree.

  23. Morgan Leigh Says:

    I added Agents of Atlas and Secret Warriors but dropped Amazing Spider-Man.

  24. MurrayC Says:

    I did ADD four titles to my pull-list (even though three of them are mini-series)

    Flash: Rebirth (Geoff Johns never disappoints IMO)

    Blackest Night (see above)

    Incognito (I picked up the first issue on a whim, and now I’m hooked)

    Batman & Robin (Cautiously optimistic. I geeked over Morrison and Quitely’s run on All Star Superman, but I hated, HATED, Morrison’s bat-work so far. I will get the first issue, and we’ll go from there. But I can’t be bothered buying all the other new Bat-titles. Simply no point to them)

    Speaking of new comics…

    Attention Dan Didio and Joe Quesada (an open gripe to both of you)

    Why, WHY, are there so many spin-offs and one-shots and tie-ins stemming off from “event” stories that were not well received? Seriously, Dan, why do we “need” so many titles that relate to “Final Crisis”? The same goes for Secret Invasion, Joe.

    I sorry to say that most of these titles are simply not worth the paper they are printed on. And that’s not just my opinion, take a look at last week’s responses as to why people are dropping titles in droves (in addition as to why comics are too expensive): http://blog.newsarama.com/2009/04/24/line-by-line-trimming-the-pull-list/

    Can we please just get back to telling good basic stories within the core titles that do not tie into an event and muck-up things up for both the readers and your writers? We’ve had our fill, and our wallets are empty.

    Here is how I’d like to see things fixed…

    1. No more “events” (after Black Night, that’s IT! Enough already!)
    2. No more dozens of spins-off, tie-ins, etc to any of the aforementioned events
    3. No more reboots or re-imaginings (**cough**spider-man**cough**)
    4. No more second-tier, third-tier, B-List characters running the show while the heavy hitters are missing or out of commission.
    5. No more destroying your heavy hitter characters only to have them replaced and then find some way of bringing them back since everyone KNOWS you will bring them back anyway because NO ONE ever likes the replacements (gasp)
    6. And, Jesus Christ, stop with all those useless weekly comics. Save a frikin’ tree already will you?

  25. David Uzumeri Says:

    Looking at what I was getting six months to a year ago, it’s been a pretty steady progression of DC books to Marvel books, simply because DC’s running a lot of my old favorites into the ground while Marvel’s introducing too many books I like for me to buy, which is pretty rare. I’ve dropped the whole Titans franchise, Wonder Woman, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle (pre-cancellation), Green Arrow/Black Canary, Outsiders, Brave and the Bold, Justice League of America, and probably a bunch of other books I’m forgetting, and JSA’s on the chopping block after this week too since I really don’t have too much interest in Willingham/Sturges, especially not with superheroes. With regards to new books, I guess I’m getting, um, Batman and Robin and Blackest Night. And that’s it, on top of the Superman franchise, GL books and some of the Bat-titles.

    Meanwhile, Marvel’s just — even their little event miniseries are good now, with Fantastic Four, Hawkeye and Elektra all being surprisingly entertaining. Then there’s Dark Avengers, Secret Warriors, Spider-Woman, Agents of Atlas, and all their mainstay midlist titles that rule (Iron Fist, Hercules, Thunderbolts, etc.) so… well, I guess I’m not really pinching my wallet yet.

  26. Brandon Yates Says:

    I don’t know if minis count, but I added Seaguy. $3.99 but worth supporting a project I enjoy in serial form.

  27. RobRG Says:

    I follow nearly all DCU titles, so in the last few months I’ve added most of it’s new series (except for Solomon Grundy and a few things like that).

  28. Cisco Kid Says:

    I have added minis to my pull list, like many others, but no more ongoings.

    It’s not a financial decision with me, it’s time. All of the books are now so bogged down by continuity, reading and really enjoying a new series has become cumbersome. Comics used to be my lifestyle, but now as an adult with a job and a wife, it has been demoted to hobby.

    I have always been a DC guy, but I hear about how good a lot of Marvel titles are. Problem is, all of the new Marvel series started during or tie in heavily to Civil War, Secret Invasion, or Dark Reign, all of which I have either not read or not enjoyed. I am more likely to pick up a spin off of a current series so I don’t get caught in another crossover trap.

    What I’m looking for in a new series is something I can pick up and read without having to know an encyclopedia’s worth of lore. Jonah Hex is a great read for this. Blue Beetle did a good job of being self contained for most of its run. So is Invincible and Walking Dead. Captain America seems to exist in its own corner of Marvel.

    I want more of that!

  29. Kelson Says:

    I’ve added several books since December, but they’re all miniseries. Although Farscape is turning into a might-as-well-be-ongoing.

  30. Kevin Says:

    Oh yes. Far too many to list here. And far too many more to come.

    I need help.

  31. Kevin Says:

    Cisco Kid, for Marvel books in that vein, I highly suggest you check out the trades that have been published so far for the following books: The Immortal Iron Fist, Astonishing X-Men and the current run on Fantastic Four.

  32. Kevin Says:

    Also, Wolverine: Old Man Logan when it hits trade.

  33. Casey Says:

    Added Flash:Rebirth because its my favorite character, I pick up most of the DC books, not really into marvel. Way to go Jesse Blaze Snyder on “Dead Romeo”! Its great stuff..

  34. Thomas Says:

    Incognito
    Irredeemable
    Back to Brooklyn
    Epilogue
    Unknown Soldier (does that fit the timeline)
    Warlord
    Detective (when Rucka’s run starts unless it’s too involved in the Cowl crap)

    Most of my drops have been because they’ve ended, but I am thinking about dropping Captain America, Daredevil, and Thor because Marvel is putting out those nice hardcover editions.

  35. Timg138 Says:

    I’ve been a DC guy my whole life. But lately I’ve been adding a lot of Marvel books, and sacrificing DC books to do so. Main Marvel stuff I’ve been buying are the “cosmic” titles. (War of Kings, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy – Guess I like Abnett and Lanning, huh?) Oh, and SKAR because is has the Silver Surfer in it lately.

  36. Sean Says:

    I add by quality/intrigue, but it’s typically been balanced out by dropping something. Added Air, Secret Six, Supergirl, Mighty Avengers, and World of New Krypton. I also have bought a couple Absolutes, will add Wednesdays Comics, Flash, and Blackest Night.

    But Dark Reign and price hikes made me drop books that made up for those.

  37. lanternut Says:

    From May of 08, I’ve dropped all the Batfamily book. I’ll come back when Bruce does. This means for the first time in over 25+ years of collection Batman and Detective there will be a gap in my collection. I’ve also dropped JLA and both Superman and Action. I will also be dropping JSA after Johns has left, one more issue to go I believe.

    What I’ve added:
    Wolverine (For Old Man Logan)
    Flash:Rebirth
    Blackest Night and all tie-ins
    Sherlock Holmes

  38. Mark Says:

    Ive actaully found a job with better pay and benefits, in todays economy with all the lay offs and what not i was shocked that this would happen, so i myself have added a whole mess of books, around the neighborhood of 15, which brings my monthly total to 40

  39. thequestion Says:

    THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER

  40. TRTMatt Says:

    I’ve dropped several books or intend to drop them like Wolverine once OML ends, but I picked up Weapon X and I’ve also added the GL books and the Avengers books and I also plan to pick up several of the new Bat books once they come out.

  41. Ortiz Says:

    Since october, added Unknown Soldier, Punisher, Secret Warriors, Dark Avengers and Agents of Atlas. Don’t have plans for any new ongoings at least till july. Peace.

  42. Cisco Kid Says:

    Thanks for the advice, Kevin. Iron Fist is one that I have been eyeing for a while, but I heard it was being cancelled. Is that still true? If not, I may jump aboard.

    I have been dying to pick up the Millar/Hitch Fantastic Four, but I never went with the monthly because I expected Ultimates-like delays. I’ll be getting the HC collections for sure. Ditto for Old Man Logan, I have been staying far away from reviews and spoilers because I want to enjoy that HC when it comes out.

    I collected Astonishing during Whedon’s run, but I haven’t enjoyed the new arc since Unstoppable. I like most things by Ellis (even Gah-Lac-Tus). I like Bianchi from his Wolverine covers and Seven Soldiers Shining Knight. I dunno, for some reason their powers combined aren’t giving me Captain Planet, y’know?

  43. dcist Says:

    Just added Green Lantern Corps after catching up on trades in preparation for the Blackest Night.

    The Literals (to be fair, I kind of wish I didn’t have to add this and that Bill Willingham and company would pour all of their efforts into Fables alone)

  44. Quetzal Says:

    Mostly all of what I´d add is DC stuff but there´s one or two titles from independent publishers, but also I had to let go some titles from other publishers like Conan or the League, Thor, Hulk, what I´d add so far and that I can remember is:

    Dead Romeo (because I like vampires so much)
    Flash Rebirth
    Batman and Robin
    Detective Comics
    Superman
    World of New Krypton
    Solomon Grundy
    Tales of the Corps
    Battle for the Cowl
    Azrael Death´s Dark Knight
    All BFTC one shots
    All Final Crisis Aftermath
    JSA vs Kobra
    Rebels
    Strange Adventures
    Buck Rogers (From Dynamite)
    Fusion (from Top Cow)
    And every miniseries that radical comics publish

    But I´m sure that I will drop some of this on the road

  45. Abraxazzz Says:

    Rebels
    flash rebirth
    action comics which i may drop if the art does not get better
    and ill probably be adding red robin, batman and blackest night

  46. Paul Moua Says:

    I have one ongoing book only on my pull list now. B.P.R.D. which I will never give up.

    I also have anything Hellboy, Fear Agent, Walking Dead, and X titles.

    This after maintaining atleast 12-15 books per month for the last 8-9 years. I have tried to stay as loyal as I could, but I feel I may have to finally drop the X-men titles, and also Walking dead which has it’s releases slowed to a crawl. What is it with Image? I used to have 6-7 Image books on my pull list, but their sporadic release schedule is driving me crazy. Looking at their latest market share and I’m not a lone in this.

  47. dwolfanger Says:

    This weekend I went to a comic convention and bought around 50 books for 60 dollars. I got the 1st 20 issues of Fraction’s War Journal-most of them for $1 each.
    With book prices and the economy the way it is, I will add books: On the “secondary” market.

  48. Kevin Says:

    Iron Fist is going on some kind of hiatus while an Immortal Weapons mini-series is being churned out in its place with Iron Fist back-ups for a bit. Following that, Iron Fist will return as a regular series at some point, most likely with a new number one issue.

  49. Cisco Kid Says:

    I’m on board with Iron Fist as soon as it returns.

    I was thinking about Hercules as well, Previews hinted that it would be dropping Hulk’s “Incredible” moniker/numbering, and starting a new #1.

    Also, I might start Deadpool. I wasn’t familiar with the character at all (thought he was leftover 90s X-Mess), but all the stuff on Daily Scans over the past few weeks has me really interested!!

    ~~~~
    Paul Moua, Walking Dead has been very consistent monthly since the beginning of the year. Are you still having problems getting it regularly? I feel for you about the X titles, I am having the same dilemma with the Superman books, despite collecting every title monthly since the mid nineties.
  50. Milleniumcyke Says:
    Nothing since the start of the new year.
  51. O. Says:
    Actually, I’ve added a decent amount. I finished Sinestro Corps War, so I was caught up and now I’m reading Green Lantern and GL Corps. For awhile I was looking for books to try out as my weekly visits to the shop were especially light. As long as I can pay $3 for 32 pages, I’ll buy it. It’s basically about if I’m getting my money’s worth. So for $4, I want at least more than 32 pages.
  52. wolfspider Says:
    Marvel titles I currently get: Daredevil (will drop when Brubaker leaves), Captain America, Incognito/Criminal, and Mighty Avengers.
    Marvel titles I may add: The two new Brubaker books, one of them is a Golden Age Era and the other is called Reborn (I think), which I assume is the return of Stever Rogers.
    Marvel titles I will never add: Anything written by Bendis.
    DC titles I currently get: Seaguy
    DC titles I will add: Batman and Robin & Detective
    DC titles I may add: I’m a huge fan of Doom Patrol, but I’m not a big Keith Giffen fan and I don’t really like what he’s had to say about his plans for the team. Plus, I despise Kevin McGuire’s art (in the back-up stories), so that is a big negative.
    I will also get anything written my Alan Moore or Grant Morrison (even when it isn’t great, like his recent work on Batman and Final Crisis). I will consider books by Brubaker, Rucka, David, Busiek, Johns, and Slott. I would like to pick up Slott’s Spiderman, but I hate both the “Brand New Day” crap & the rotating writers on that series.
    I’ve hated most Marvel books since Bendis seems to have influenced the entire universe. Slott gives respect to the history of the Marvel universe while still keeping it fresh and modern. Unlike Bendis, he doesn’t need to write cuss words and sex in order to sell books.
    I’ve only recently dropped my DC picks, but what they have planned seems promising (except for, sadly, the Doom Patrol).
    Comics cost too much money to buy any old crap anymore.
  53. Tim Seeley Says:
    Man, every time I read something like this, I get so mad that people say they’ve stopped reading comics ALTOGETHER cuz they don’t like all the crossovers stuff. Really? There’s a simple solution to that. BUY INDEPENDENT COMICS. I mean, obviously, those that hate it are a minority, but you’re a minority that could be well served by some good quality indy and creator owned books.
    I’ve added SOUL KISS, BAD DOG and INCREDIBLE HERCULES in the past few months. All great stuff.
    TIM
  54. Laimbeer Says:
    Compared to this time last year, here’s what I’ve added or plan on adding:
    1) Trinity (soon to be over with, but I will likely replace it with Wednesday Comics.)
    2) Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam (wonderful book when it comes out)
    3) Secret Six (loved the mini-series and loving the monthly)
    4) Power Girl (going to give it a try based on the strength of the creative team)
    5) Agents of Atlas (again, loved the mini and loving the ongoing)
    6) Dark Avengers (although I’m dropping it after issue #6; I decided to try the first issue, thinking it was $4 because it was oversized. Once I discovered it is normal sized at that price, I decided to ride out the first storyline, then drop it. A good book, but not a $4 book. Plus, I keep wondering why this couldn’t have just been Thunderbolts.)
    7) Metal Men (I love the characters and the creative team, so I’ll give this title a try)
    8) Flash: Rebirth (will likely give the ongoing a try as well)
    9) Atomic Robo (a fun book with great art that really fits the tone)
    10) Echo (I missed out on the Strangers in Paradise bandwagon, but I’m enjoying this book a lot)
    11) Umbrella Academy (a wonderful trip for both the mind and the eyes)
    12) Back Issue magazine (a great publication on comics from the 70′s-90′s; I dropped Wizard, get my current comics news online, and get Back Issue for my magazine fix.)
    Out of the above, I’m getting the Marvel and DC stuff monthly, the other books as trades. I often get @ 2-3 mini-series as well.
    Overall, I’ve dropped my monthly output from 42-48 books down to 22-26, which shows the drastic turnover I’ve gone through. As I mentioned in the “sister thread” to this one, I’ve dropped all $4 monthlies as well as a number of mainstream super-hero books. I get my books at discount and am keeping to @$50 a month; any new book I get means I have to drop another book (i.e. I added Power Girl but am dropping JLA.) My wife and kids often pick up a trade or two for me around holidays (like the ones listed above), which also helps.
  55. ScreamingSilence Says:
    I’ve added Secret Warriors annd both Green Lantern series. Congrats to DC for finally making me pick up a series of theirs consistently for the first time EVER. I’m planning on getting Dark Reign minis for The Hood, Mr. Negative, Zodiac, Lethal Legion, and maaaybe Sinister Spiderman.
  56. Ill Diablo Says:
    I’m not afraid to add new series, but they almost always come to the detriment of dropping a series I’ve become lukewarm to. This keeps my weekly comics bill roughly the same–last year was about as bad as it’s ever gotten, with my pull list topping out around forty books a month! I’ve, eh, taken steps since then to prevent that from happening again.
  57. Steve Says:
    I’ve added Secret Warriors, Agents of Atlas, every War of Kings tie in for the duration at least, R.E.Be.L.S, the Superman title featuring Mom-El and will soon add Detective and Batman for the first time in years. Economics has never affected my decisions to add or drop in the entire thirty plus years I’ve been collecting!
  58. Andrew Says:
    Let’s see, I dropped Amazing Spider-Man post-One More Day but that’s a while ago now. I’ll be dropping Justice Society when Jerry Ordway’s issues are done. I dropped Booster Gold when Johns left. I’ve dropped Batman. I dropped Detective when Dini left, but will be getting it when Rucka returns. I dropped The Brave and the Bold after the Jerry Ordway issues. I dropped Mighty Avengers after Bendis left. I dropped Punisher War Journal when Chaykin finished. I dropped Punisher when Ennis left. I dropped Green Arrow/Black Canary when Winick left. I’ve started getting Hellblazer in trades. I’ve added Incognito and Viking and I will add Wednesday Comics. Off the top of my head, that’s all I can think of.
  59. skullduggery Says:
    I added a couple of mini-series (Soul Kiss and Hexed) since they are finite and don’t require a lengthy time and cost commitment.
    I will be adding Detective Comics and Gotham Sirens in May.
    I’ve added:
    Every ALL AGES Titles from BOOM! STUDIOS
    ALL BONGO COMICS Titles
    MARVEL – NEW MUTANTS
  62. Richard Says:
    I have added Air, Viking, Beserker, The Sword, The Literals, and Sherlock Holmes to my pull list so far this year. I’ve also been picking up the trades of Transmetropolitan. There are too many spin offs and side stories to even want to try and get into the Marvel or DC’s mainstream comics, but I still do enjoy reading Deadpool.
  63. Brian Says:
    I don’t collect any regular titles anymore. I try to check what is good in the market. I may get some trade books in the latter part of the year.
    You know it’s an interesting question in light of the previous question, and it got me thinking. I just realized that ever since I went straight to trades I have been buying more variety of titles. Having the luxury of not being pigeon-holed to a title on monthly basis has allow me to use the time (known as “waiting” for trade) to seek out new books.
    Back when I was a monthly reader (’97ish), all I ever bought was everything Image put out and just one Marvel and DC title. I spent probably $50 a month. I never strayed from my usual books because of my budget. But as soon as my budget started shrinking I switch to trades. At the time there was a lot of “waiting” (there’s that term again) and it allowed me to save money, but as time progressed I fell behind in every single book I was reading because trades weren’t coming out as frequent as monthlies can. So I found myself looking at new titles and just picking up the first trade available. I remember one the first trade outside of my usual reading was QUEEN & COUNTRY, I was blown away. Then I picked up WHITEOUT, I was on a roll and I knew all I had to do is listen by word of mouth or read the online reviews. Most the trades I pick up had some solid reviews and have made buying them that much easier instead of sampling a monthly issue.
    In fact I find reviews and word of the mouth for monthlies to be less reliable than trades because the analysis is generally incomplete because the story hasn’t finished. Can you imagine what critics what say about the first 3 issues of WATCHMEN. It would’ve been condemned as slow moving and barely entertaining plot, and a bunch of talking heads with no end in sight. I like to give a book some maturation before I look at the reviews. Of course there are some monthly issues that are surefire hits like Brubaker’s CAPTAIN AMERICA run. Which I’ll probably eventually get in hardcover when at reasonable price.
    So I guess you can say I’ve added quit few books. Though I must say I really think readers need to move away from having a pull list and just buy what intrigues you when you shop for a book. Pull list have allowed publishers to become complacent with storytelling and focus too much on marketing. Crossover events are general created to bring readership back to a low selling title. Of course there are exceptions to the rule like Blackest Night which is more or less just a highly publicized storyline going on with GREEN LANTERN.
    You know if I ever somewhere down the road decide to read Blackest Night via trade, it will likely be just a GREEN LANTERN story to me. Not some mega event that publishers market it as. I look back at some the crossovers I’ve read and they really aren’t that much different than just your regular monthly story. Just a crapload of marketing.
  65. C. Skaw Says:
    While I read a lot of Marvel and DC(only Batman really) when I was younger, I find them a little too convoluted these days (not to mention the effort required to get all the facets of a story and my compulsive need to have them all).
    I find myself drawn to independent comics as it is easier to collect all the issues and the stories are more varied.
    In the last two months or so, I have added:
    Zenescope: the Wonderland mini, Grimm Fairy Tales, and Salem’s Daughter
    Aspen: Fathom, Soulfire, and Executive Assistant Iris
    Dabel: Dresden Files, Dog Eaters, Take a Chance, Frankenstein, Mercy Thompson, and Wheel of Time
    And of course Mouse Guard.
    I was pondering the new Deadpool though. He has always been a favorite of mine.
    Shaun (way back to post #2)… IRREDEEMABLE is ongoing!
