Terrence Howard on Iron Man 2: “I believe in karma”

Eesh.

Parade reports that Terrence Howard, whose departure from Iron Man 2 has been widely discussed, has made some angry words on the upcoming film:

“Marvel made a choice, and it was a very, very bad choice,” Howard said. “They didn’t keep their word. They didn’t honor my contract. They produced a great bounty with the first one but they put it all in the storehouse and you were not allowed in.”

He wished Don Cheadle, who will be playing Rhodey in the next film, the best of luck, saying that it was due to the Cheadle he managed to get a role in the Oscar-winning Crash. But otherwise…

“I’ve seen the script, I know what’s going to happen, but I’m not revealing anything… I believe in karma,” he continued. “When someone does something wrong, you don’t have to get them back. Everything right will return the favor for you.”

This could be simply some bitterness, or could be indicative of a real drop in quality. While the first Iron Man film was written by the screenwriters of Children of Men, the sequel has been written by Justin Theroux, the screenwriter behind Tropic Thunder. Which is not to say he isn’t a good writer, but does pale in comparison. “I’m a dude, playing a dude, disguised as an Iron Dude!”

Terrance Howard believes in karma? The guy who was arrested for punching his estranged wife in the face?

And he thinks Marvel did HIM wrong?

  2. silvanthalas Says:

Will Terrance Howard please STFU already.

  3. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

As the fox slunk away, he thought, “Those grapes are probably sour anyway”,

  4. Shaun Says:

Have fun hanging out with Cuba Gooding, Jr. doing… Well, whatever the hell Cuba Gooding, Jr. does with himself these days.

  5. Josh Says:

Anyone who puts out an album as crappy as his should not be tempting karma. And let’s not even get into his recent string of bad movies like Pride [AKA Hustle & Float].

  6. Ortiz Says:

    Great comment Vinnie. Totally agree.

    Peace.

If you had a multi-film contract and the film you worked on goes on to make crazy money and they plan a sequel that will make even more money, you guys are saying that if they just ignore your contract, fire you and replace you with someone else, you’d be fine with that?

    AE.

  8. Shaun Says:

AE, from what I remembered reading, it was more than that. I can’t remember if it was Howard wanting more money or what, but it was more than just Marvel deciding to break contract. Even if they did decide to break it, for whatever the reason, I’m sure there’s a payout Marvel had to make for doing so.

Anyhow, I hadn’t heard about Howard punching his estranged wife (as Alexa mentioned above)… But if that indeed happened I wouldn’t want him in my movie either.

  9. AnTwan Says:

Contracts exist so that they can’t just be broken. If he isn’t a part of it, they did what they had to do to make it so he wasn’t a part of it which probably means they bought him out of it as were the terms of the contract. If I were Terrance Howard would I be a little upset about getting removed from the film? maybe. but that’s show business.

  10. Alexa Says:

IIRC, they wanted him out of the movie because a) he was getting paid WAY too much. More than RDJ. And b) because “they” weren’t happy with his performance. Paying someone more than everyone else to do a job the boss is unhappy with wouldn’t fly in any other industry, and I doubt the movie industry is any exception.

As for his arrest for assaulting his wife: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/0217091howard1.html

  11. preston Says:

The screenwriters for Iron Man wrote Children of Men? Well, color me surprised because that was a completely underwhealming movie undeserving of the praise it received.

On the other hand I actually enjoyed Trophic Thunder and even though it’s supposed to be a completely different film than CoM and Iron Man, I think I have a little more faith in the current screenwriter.

  12. Hudson Says:

I got a great comment on my Comic blog about this ha ha. STFU Terrence I agree

If Terrance Howard had an ironclad contract for him to be in the 2nd film would there not be a lawsuit? So, I highly doubt TH had a contract with Marvel saying he was ‘guaranteed’ to be in IM #2 and #3. Hell, Marvel probably gave him some money to just get him to go away. Perhaps TH should be more pissed at his peeps for not being able to lock him into the role.

From the news of him being difficult on set, to having a high price tag to punching his wife in the face to his ho-hum performance, Iron Man 2 will be better off without him.

And I am sorry, even IF the script for IM 2 is not ‘great’, it is still going to make boatloads of cash. I think most people will read the article that it is just a whiny actor’s sour grapes at being dumped for a better actor(and what version of the script could he have read?) whose career is going down the toilet (“Fighting” anyone?)

TH whining is older than yesterday’s news. Good riddance and goodbye.

  14. Shaun Says:

@Preston: Not trying to argue with you, but what did you find “underwhelming” about Children of Men? That was a rare movie in this day an age: An intelligent piece of screenwriting, AND an incredible piece of cinematography at the same time. It wasn’t going to be accessible to a mass audience, the same way that IM was, but it was easily one of my favorite films of the past decade. I’m guessing, by way of your comments, that you didn’t like IM either. To each their own, I guess.

I never saw Tropic Thunder, though I heard very good things about it. It just looked kinda silly to me, and I can’t stand Jack Black. So that doesn’t fill me with a whole lot of confidence for IM2, but I trust Favreau (who’s earned that trust after the first IM) so I’ll reserve judgement until IM2 actually comes out.

  15. Mightor Junior Says:

Howard would have made a great Ironman. If you know the story of Ironman, Rhodey will wear the Iron suit once alcohol takes over Tony’s life, if not in this film it will happen in part 3. I was looking forward to seeing Howard play the part. He would have been great. As always the black actor is always the one who is expendable. What a shame.

Cheadle would look ridiculous in the Ironman armor!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I won’t buy into this! hollywood takes something good and ruins it!!!!!!!!!

  16. Rick Evans Says:

He had a sealed contract with a buy-out clause. He still got some money, but Howard wanted to be in it and was replaced. That’s like being benched from a team when you played as well as the next guy.

  17. Tori Kulinski Says:

    |I don’t ordinarily interrupt brilliant conversations such as this with my own personal issues, but I really need the help of anyone who is in a position to lend me a hand. I’m thinking about doing business with http://lawncaremaintenance.net/ and I wanted to ask if somebody here has employed them in past times. I am hunting for both the positive and negative areas of their business. Please make contact with me as fast as possible for this is extremely important. Thanks a lot.
