Not tuckered out from yesterday’s Wednesday Comics previews? Good!

DC’s blog, the Source, has revealed two more previews for their 12-part upcoming weekly series: this time with Neil Gaiman and Mike Allred’s Metamorpho, and Dave Gibbons and Ryan Sook’s Kamandi!

wow, this thing really looks to be shaping into something special. the kamandi strip looks vaguely prince valiantyish, no?

  2. Zawisza Says:

Kamandi is the absolute last character I’m interested in in the DCU. This offering, however, makes me reconsider that statement. The art looks amazing! Sook is really bringing his “A” game.

  3. bSmithy Says:

freakin’ awesome. I’ve given up monthly books in lieu of TPBs, but THIS…this I’m getting.

  4. Greymattersplat Says:

Definitely looks like Prince Valiant…which is kinda genius, if you ask me.

Mike Allred on Metamorpho is inspired as well! It’s hard to find an artist with more “funk” in him than that guy, and Metamorpho’s a funky character.

  5. SouthtownKid Says:

Holy schnikies. That Sook Kamandi art is beautiful. Very Alex Raymond.

  6. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

I gotta ask again, how did Kurt Busiek let a Kamandi project slip through his fingers?

  7. RolandGunner Says:

Oh man I’m psyched for this. Wednesday Comics: great idea for a comic book or greatest idea for a comic?

  8. eaglesfillthesky Says:

yeah, i said vaguely, but i mean “total homage”

  9. htes Says:

I click on the images to make them bigger & they just pop up at the original size. This happens on every image on this site, which is lame for a site that traffics in visual media.

Ryan Sook on Kamandi? Wednesday Comics gets better and better!

  11. Devon Says:

I was incredibly psyched for the Kamandi strip, but beyond Ryan Sook’s art, it looks pretty disappointing. I’m not digging Gibbon’s work here at all, and it’s been a bit since i read Kamandi, but it seems slightly contradictory to Kirby’s stories.

  12. Ron Motta Says:

I am very excited by the concept and execution (thus far) of “Wednesday Comics.” It’s a brilliant idea and I hope the format catches on. It’s a great way to bring new readers into comics.

  13. karl Says:

    That looks great.

  14. Kurt Busiek Says:

    >> I gotta ask again, how did Kurt Busiek let a Kamandi project slip through his fingers? >>

Every time I ask, they say someone else has dibs. Ah well.

This looks amazing, and I’m dying to read it all. Dave and Ryan are gonna do a great job.

And I think I’m officially out of any future KAMANDI sweepstakes, because I’ve figured out a new series idea that has what I like about Kamandi without being Kamandi itself, and accordingly doesn’t come with the weight of “It ain’t like Jack, so you’re doing it wrong” that any Kamandi project has to contend with. [Plus, of course, if it's my own project, no one can tell me someone else has dibs!]

But wow — everything I see from WEDNESDAY COMICS looks great. I’m honored to be included with these guys…

I can’t comment on Gibbons writing as it is just one page and seems introductory more than anything else

Don’t see any contradiction to Kirby in that page at all either.

And to Kurt. So do your own type of story.

  16. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

I’m wi’ya, Kurt. Awesome after awesome.

I’m going to keep saying it - I hope and pray DC does something bold and outlandish to get news of this series (and through that, the series itself) into the hands of the public at large. This is almost wasted on comics fandom alone. If it goes well, maybe it’ll open the door for other non-standard format fare that might be more attractive to magazine stands and bookstores.

  17. Kirth Says:

    ..

This has got to be the coolest thing DC has come up with since….they thought up “sliced bread”, right?

    Pretty, pretty.

  18. Corey Says:

htes, I agree it’s a bit silly that the pictures posted here don’t get bigger. You’ll have to go to DC’s blog The Source, where they’re posted.

  19. Bobby Timony Says:

I read the headline and thought “Allred on Metal Men? Really?!?” and was disappointed. Not that Metamorpho isn’t cool and all, but can we fix the headline, please?

  20. BiffordMichael Says:

    My word these look STUNNING…

    Biff

  21. kcekada Says:

This looks to be the best thing to come out of DC in years. Maybe the just need to forget all of that tedious DCU continuity, and let creators tell the stories they want to tell.

  22. Craig Hewitt Says:

    Hominahominahomina…this is gonna be great!

  23. HDO Says:

I can’t wait to have these for my classroom!

  24. marcus Says:

Wednesday Comics looks like it’s going to be amazing.
What’s gonna be the cover price for these?

  25. durkadurka Says:

Gaiman and Allred?? Holy sweet Jebus!!

  26. Chuck McKinney Says:

Wow! All the Wednesday Comics pages have been amazing! Can’t wait!

  27. Dave Elliott Says:

Both of these look stunning. Allred captures the essence of Ramona’s work wonderfully. And Kamandi? What’s not to love?

  28. hondo Says:

I’m with everyone else. This is like a dream come true.

The last panel with Kamandi crediting Jack Kirby and published by Detective Comics. How cool is that ? Great touches.

Allred & Metamorpho - Another phenomenal hit.

Why can’t we get more dream teams on stuff like this ? If we could get this caliber of quality all the time I’d be buying the weekly for my fix and the collected edition later too.

  29. om Says:

“Definitely looks like Prince Valiant…which is kinda genius, if you ask me.”

…I was thinking more Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon strips myself. And while I really have never cared one iota for Allred’s stiffer-than-John Fortesque style, it’s obvious here he’s at least *trying* to channel Ramona Fradon’s classic work on the original Metamorpho book from the 60’s.

This experiment may actually be worth buying, kids.

  30. Julian Says:

This is the only superhero comic I want for forever. This is the kind of thing you mount on the walls.

  31. Rich Naran Says:

The Kamandi does bring me back to thoe original Terry and The Pirates -Prince Valiant- Tarzan style strips. This is really well thought out. Now hopefully Moms won’t line the kitchen full with it after mopping like they didn with the Sunday papers in the 50’s.
