I just think that when all is said and done, each character will only have a 12-page story to show for it and the physical size of the series is unwieldy. Folding and unfolding all of that requires too much “hands-on” from the reader, which increases chances that the comic will get damaged. That’s always a turnoff.

Each issue is the equivalent of 4 pages so 12 issues translates into a 48 page story which is more than enough time for character development. You’ll likely only unfold it once and it’s not intended to last forever anyway…it’s a newspaper!

Why would having a comic at a comic shop be a failure? If they got this onto mainstream newsstands it would be great but far from necessary. You certainly wont see it at the checkout as Archie still has that sewn up and frankly the cost would make it untenable (You have to PAY for placement in the supermarket…getting this at checkout stands would cost tens of thousands and require a sell through in the hundreds of thousands to make it worthwhile…won’t happen.

Lovely. I’m very enthusiastic about Wednesday Comics, but I’m quite worried about the format and size, and the durability and archivability of the format. How will I shelve or store this so that it remains pristine?

Not to be Rude but, Who Cares? This is intended to be read, collectability is secondary.

Considering that most current comics lose value a newspaper likely will have little to none.

It will fit into a standard comic bag when folded. If you want it unfolded I’d invest in some newspaper sized bags and store them flat in an art drawer.
Lastly, they’re on newsprint which will deteriorate no matter what so Archival is not a possibility.

Anyhow, I wasn’t caring much about this until I saw the Superman artwork. AWESOME… That alone might get me to try this out. I hope the stories are as good as the art. The Batman art didn’t knock me out as much as the Supes art, but it’s nice. And it’s Azzarello, so that’ll probably good too.

As for getting this into newspapers, it’s a great idea that I wish DC had thought of. It would be a lot of work, yes, but it could be done. In fact, it has been done! Did anyone else get those Amazing Spider-Man reprints (the original Lee/Ditko stories from the 60′s) in their Sunday papers a few years back? I loved those, and I collected them all. I wish they’d kept it going a bit longer. They never got to any Green Goblin stories.

Image tried that oversize thing years ago with a mini called “Clock Maker” that was a bomb, so they had to reformat the last part of the series as a standard prestige format comic.

It’s a cute idea to bring the idea of the Sunday newspaper comics section to comic books, but I think this is one of those things where the reality will quickly highlight the flaws in the concept.

Christ, that’s beautiful. I know it’s cliche but I would pick up literally anything this team worked on.

As for price, I’m hoping for 1.99 but that’s just wishful thinking. They’re trying to attract new readers, right? (that old song and dance again) If that’s the case, they couldn’t realistically go over 2.99 and even that’s pushing it in this economy.

Granted, telling a comic story one page at a time in a weekly format isn’t new. Webcomics have been doing it for years. Its almost ballsy of DC to go in the opposite direction with this. Everyone is talking about Digital Comics and DC goes in the opposite direction with something that’s kind of old fashioned. I’m just wondering if this will work for them or not.

You’d have to work with every company that owns papers to get them in. Some cities and towns could miss out

With the way papers have been selling I don’t think the newspapers would be to up for it.

Dan Didio said in a recent 20 questions that they’re still wrestling with the price point. they really want to make sure it’s profitable, but not so expensive that people won’t buy it. It’s a grand experiment, and deserves ALL our support, but if it’s too much money, a lot of people will balk, and walk.

IIRC (correction please), each issue will be 16 HUGE (10 X 14″ I believe) pages, each story one page long, in cliffhanger format. What’s a fair (and moneymaking) price for that? I’ve no clue. I’d love it to be a dollar, but that might not be enough. Maybe they try keeping the price down and try to make it back on the inevitable trade sales? That’s quite a gamble as well. Much like films now expect to get drawn into the black by video sales (where that used to be considered gravy) it seems that many comics are being supported by their trade sales. I’m not sure that’s a healthy model to follow, but for an odd duck like this book, it might be worth it. But I’m not a businessman, so I can’t say I’m right.

I don’t expect to see it any real papers on a regular basis, but as a single promotional issue I think it’d result in some massive interest. Played right, this could really get some interest in comics again. Heck, for cities with more than one paper (not as many now, alas) they might even be willing to help spring for the cost in exchange for the circulation increase. odds are it’s too late to do such a thing – those color supplements are scheduled quite far in advance.

I agree with Vinnie, but let’s see Wednesday Comics in the Wednesday paper, not the Sunday one!

I haven’t heard about price; I wonder if any deals with actual newspapers are up in the air, making the price nebulous until said deals are complete. Or, it’s either surprisingly cheap or unfortunately expensive.
