There are obviously spoilers below the cut…
Seriously, folks, if you don’t want to get spoiled, don’t read after the cut…
All right, I warned you…
AM New York, one of the many newspapers floating around the Big Apple, had a front page announcement of Marvel’s latest Mayor of New York City. A subplot building in the thrice-monthly Amazing Spider-Man, the two previous candidates for Mayor had both left the race due to the machinations of Green Goblin-eqsue villainess Menace. So who’s in charge now?
That’s right. J. Jonah Jameson. Sorry, Spidey.
“I think Jonah doesn’t think he’s evil,” writer Dan Slott told AM New York. “He’s wonderfully rounded out. He’s a proud American; he’s very proud of his son the astronaut; he’s very petty; he very much likes being in the spotlight. He can’t stand that Spider-Man — Parker — kind of gets on his nerves, too. There’s all these different aspects of his personality. How do you explain Jonah? He’s an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in a newspaper.”
I dig Mark Waid’s response to this: “[Peter] tries a few things to figure out how to cope with this. … Ultimately he decides, well, if being Spider-Man eight hours a day makes Jonah miserable, then I will be Spider-Man 24 hours a day and make his head explode.”
And that, my friends, is democracy in action. Waid’s Amazing Spider-Man arc, “Spider-Man 24/7″ kicks off next week.
(Update: Obviously the hotlink didn’t take. Erg… let’s try this again. So with many apologies, Marvel’s Ryan Penagos for the above image.)

That’s a ridiculous line, there – That Peter is callous and nasty enough to rile up Johah after several heart attacks by being Spider-Man 24-7 is horrible, and yet another reason why it’s difficult to support this so-called hero.

I totally dig this

wow… quite unexpected! Should be a fun dynamic for the writers to play with – i guess while he’s stuck in the microverse time moves on enough for all this to happen!!?

Wow, this picture looks familiar. I’m doubting you took it, eh?
Give credit where credit is due.
Please&thanks.

…President Lex?…

Ugh. Pass.

I dunno, kind of a fun way to mix things up without throwing too many things into the pot- Jonah/Spider-Man dynamic is preserved and freshened up at the same time. Sounds kind of fun to me, and definitely in the BND tone or vibe.

Someone is really bugging out over credit for this “photo”? lol

Wonderful idea. I am so glad Mark Waid is writing the first story about this. It will surely be brilliant.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
…Heh, heh, heh. And I thought letting Luthor be president was an evil thing to do. This could actually make me start wanting to read Spider-Wimp even if it is Mark Waid writing.

These look good now all they need to do is kill spiderman off
April 15th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
While I saw this coming a mile off, this is still an excellent idea!
April 15th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I also like the possibility of Jonah and Spidey being step-brothers soon.
April 15th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Well, technically not step-brothers. Step-cousins?
April 15th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Heh. Watching Spidey piss off Jonah continually looks like fun. Maybe I’ll check out the Spider-Man books again!
April 15th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Wait…a comment from someone getting snippy about a photo taken by an EMPLOYEE OF THE PUBLISHER being taken of a fairly FLUFF cover story about THE PUBLISHER’S book going uncredited accidentally in a piece of news undoubtedly brought to the attention of bloggers everywhere by THE PUBLISHER so it could get even more attention for their product? Will wonders never cease…
At least now I know why Kevin Church desperately wants a page of original art from this comic.

This is the STUPIDEST thing to hit Spidey-land in a very, very, VERY long time.

I was actually getting interested in the developments occurring in Amazing Spider-Man enough to consider picking it up again. I do dig the idea of Jonah being Mayor, but if that’s the reason Peter does Spider-Man 24/7 then that is not deep or profound at all.
I understand that he’s been on the receiving end of Jonah for years, but Peter never really retaliated so much outside of shooting webs in Jonah’s face every once in awhile to shut him up.
I dunno. I don’t really like the reasoning behind 24/7, but I guess I’ll have to think of it more.

With great power comes great … spite.
April 16th, 2009 at 9:45 am
So THAT’s the story that needed a single Peter Parker before…wait, what…no? Oh. Never mind, people – false alarm!
April 16th, 2009 at 9:56 am
Brilliant! Because if running a metropolitan newspaper didn’t kill him THIS surely will!
April 16th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Yeah I think this is my last BND issue. In this comic, Spidey said if he unmasks then all of the memories of him will come rushing back. In New Avengers when he unmasked, that is not what happened. No one said “Wow it’s Peter Parker, we used to live with you!” No, Jessica Jones just remembered him from High School which had nothing to do with anything. And for both unmaskings he said something along the lines of “No one knows my secret identity!” As a reader I’m insulted that they can’t keep the storyline straight between TWO BOOKS

Continuing – As a reader I’m insulted that they can’t keep the storyline straight between TWO BOOKS when Stan Lee was able to do it with 20. The whole JQ approach “We’ll explain it later! Keep reading!” Bothers me more than OMD itself. I popped in to BND every once in a while because of Slott, but unless Obama shows up again I’m through. I’ll stick to New Avengers and Spider-Man Family (for Spider-Girl) from now on.

24/7 lol!! That was hilarious! Atta boy, wayda get’em back Spidey!
