Barack the Barbarian vs. Ann Coulter hits SNL

In case you guys weren’t watching SNL this weekend, Weekend Update had a nice little shout-out to the latest in Obama-themed comics from Devil’s Due, Barack the Barbarian:

The cover — which you can see in full below — is the match-up between Barack vs. Ann Coulter, “the screeching enchantress.” Ouch.

Shock novelty aside, I’m curious to see how the Larry Hama-penned book goes — this is the first time I can remember of a standard 22-pager (not a daily strip) trying to do day-in, day-out political satire. If they can keep things fresh and timely — which is a challenge, considering how much prep time is needed to produce a comic — this could be the first of a new genre for the standard pamphlet system. Thoughts?

It can only work if they make fun of Obama too (and there’s a LOT to make fun of). And not just one token joke just to say “we made fun of him too.” If it’s just a fan wank to Obama, well, I guess Brian Wood and Mark Millar would like it.

If they can even try and make it a 70/30 ratio of insulting conservatives/liberals, then that’s a good start (I’m realistic in that you won’t get anymore in a predominantly liberal medium).

  2. Lawrence Says:

Sorry Ken, I’m pretty sure you only put Ann Coulter in a comic to lampoon conservatives. If you were going to create a comic that was fair to both conservatives/liberals you’d probably put two political “equals.”

John Stewart vs. Ann Coulter would probably work better since they’re both “political” entertainers. Or pair Barack Obama with another politician (it’s old news, but McCain would have worked better). Heck it would be funny if you had Obama fight former Presidents.

  3. Ken B. Says:

But you can still make fun of Obama, especially if this is an ongoing (and all I see are different covers, are these all one-shots or what?). Have “Tel-u-promtur,” some mystic elf tell him what to say all the time, and follows him wherever he goes. Have him travel with a mirror because the dude’s so narcissistic, or robbing rich people just to give their money to the shady guild AKORN, something.

  4. Jack Harkness Says:

Thing is, Ken, those things are only funny to the tiny fraction of the population that slurps down every quarter-baked Glenn Beck tantrum. No sane person cares that this president, like so many before him, uses a teleprompter to deliver prepared remarks. No sane person thinks this president is any more egotistical than anyone else who wakes up one morning and thinks they should run for president. No sane person cares about ACORN, let alone places it at the center of a nexus of ill-defined conspiracy theories that fall apart under a moment’s thought. Truly, President Obama has been blessed to have enemies who are incoherent loons.

  5. Dave Says:

Yes Ken, when I read that someone’s doing a comic featuring Barack Obama as a barbarian fighting Ann Coulter, I know I sure think “man, what this comic needs is some wildly distorted bullshit right wing talking points shat all over it to make it seem more ‘balanced’ to the lunatics who sent their picture in to the 9/12 project.”

Incidentally, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and pretty much every other president for the past few decades have all used teleprompters you blithering idiot.

  6. Ken B. Says:

    Wow, that was……weird.

Just wanting some shots at both sides and now I’m a Ron Pauliac or something. Way to be overly defensive about wanting both sides to get the piss taken out of them.

“Have “Tel-u-promtur,” some mystic elf tell him what to say all the time, and follows him wherever he goes.”

    Why?

  8. Dwight L. MacPherson Says:

I’m holding out for the Rahmbo Emanuel versus Rush the Magic Dragon comic.

DDP is in favor of Obama. They are Chicago-based. I am doubtful that Obama will be ridiculed.
