A Call For Questions

April 3rd, 2009
Author Russ Burlingame

Regular readers will know that a loose, Q&A-style version of my Comic Related columns The Gold Exchange and The Truth, With Liars–they follow Booster Gold and Young Liars on a monthly basis–go up here a day before they go live at CR. Last month, we had some fun following up with Dan Jurgens, using a number of fan questions generated here on Blog@Newsarama. As such, I’ve decided that this week–before next week’s releases of Booster Gold and Young Liars–I’m going to solicit some questions from fans for Dan Jurgens and David Lapham. The interviews this week will go live here first, then at Comic Related, and finally be available over at CR as part of the weekly Related Recap podcast. So your questions and attributions will go wide and maybe I can get some prizes for people whose questions really impress me, or the creators.

Dan- Any plans for members of the supporting cast of the original series like Trixie, Dirk, or Jack to show up in the new series?

  2. Ricardo Amaral Says:

I do have one for Jurgens.

even though he was the creator of Booster Gold, his personality and probably greatest success was when he was introduced to JLI. He gained a more 3-dimentional personality, and became more unique than before. However, Geoff Johns transformed him into a buffoon in order to justify his new series (he was never a buffoon in JLI – maybe a bit full of schemes but hardly a hero nobody took seriously as Geoff implied).
So, who is the real Booster after all? The good humored clever trustworthy hero or the tragic buffoon who became all serious after JLI?

A question for Dan Jurgens: when you’re writing questions for Booster Gold do you start with a story idea first and then figure out characters from different timelines he could meet (such as Enemy Ace) or do you start with the character you want to use and then build a story around that?

A question for David Lapham: I’m loving the series and especially loving having my mind messed over by the unreliable narrator. What are some of the challenges and opportunities presented in having a narrator that the reader cannot trust?

  4. Owen Says:

Correction, the first question should read “when you’re writing STORIES for Booster Gold”, not “questions”. Sorry about that.

Thanks for doing this, by the way. I love the interviews.

rwe1138–I’ll ask yours, but I warn you that he probably won’t answer it. I’ve asked that before (plenty of times off-the-record, and once on). He won’t rule out Trixie or Jack, although I do think that Dirk remains persona non grata.

Ricardo, Dan needs to take the first crack at yours so I won’t touch it.

  6. Russ Burlingame Says:

Owen, thanks for the kind words. I love spotlighting books that I are consistently good, since comics don’t have marketing budgets like movies do. We’ll be featuring a regular Q&A with Marc Andreyko when MANHUNTER comes back (as a backup feature in one of the new Gotham books). And I’m copyediting everyone’s questions before they get to Dan and Dave anyway. ;)

  7. Geek Gazette Says:

Any chance of seeing Booster in a reunion with his JLI teamates? It would be great to see them together again, either as an untold story from the past or as a current team up.
How about some stories involving Dan Garrett, Captain Atom, or even some multiverse stories. A story where Booster meets his female counter part (I don’t remember which earth that was) could be interesting.

  8. rwe1138 Says:

With Blue Beetle soon to be added as the second feature, what are the odds of Jamie, Paco & Brenda showing up in Booster’s story?

  9. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

Even the most time-travel-heavy shows have episodes where no time-travel is featured. Doctor Who went several seasons on 20th-century Earth. Might we see any stories coming with Booster in the modern DCU and interacting with his friends? He’s already become more of a hero than he was at the beginning of the series – seeing if the other heroes pick up on the experience he’s gained might be of interest. I know there’s that Batman story coming up, but hanging around modern times for a while might be fun.

I can live without hearing more of the Ultra-Humanite, and Despero always seemed an odd choice (plus he’s getting lots of play in Trinity), but whither Per Degaton? He’s the closest thing to a threat to Hunter’s title of Time Master there is; surely he’s still got an iron or two in the fire.
