And I gotta say again, this is some beautiful. Like Alex Toth good. Clean lines, expressive characters…this is gonna be entertaining.

I didn’t think that ‘Tec could be made into a more appealing package than it already was, but this has certainly got me pumped. Can’t wait!

But the art. ASDLYGRAW3YLG. I would so pay 4$ for 8 pages of Renee looking like that. Practical hair! Awesome clothing! References to Vic (and there had BETTER BE A LOT OF THEM D:<)!

But the Renee Montoya Question? Hardly.

When perfectly good characters have been sacrificed in order to develop needless perversions of themselves, that’s when I become angry. Vic Sage had a purity about him, a philosophical edge that was in it’s own way a super-power. Renee Montoya has cop-instincts and a lesbian background?

A Diomedian swap if I ever heard of one.

Greg Rucka, if you are reading this, I honestly think your attempts to create female superheroes have been lacking. Sasha Bordeaux, Bat-Woman, and The Question among the list. Sasha and Renee would have been more enjoyable to read had they remained non-superpowered. I don’t feel you had a valid reason to turn them into super-heroes beyond, “Well I love writing these characters…but the only way they can stay around for me to write them is if I gave them super-powers to earn their keep.” And the Kat Kane Bat-Woman is just a bland concept. She’s female bat-man. Check. She’s lesbian. Check. She’s Jewish! Check. I suppose that makes her three-dimensional…?

I agree with the poster above who predicts it will made good sales in the first six months, then drop off into obscurity. At which point they may change up the Detective title again. It’s Dan Didio’s philosophy of, “The great thing about comics is that you can try again if something doesn’t work the first time.” That’s great Dan, but not if you keep screwing things up repeatedly.

Cully, I loved your work on Blue Beetle and Red. However, aside from my feelings on this Renee Montoya Question, I will be honest about your designs. I don’t get a sense of any femininity in your sketches. In real life I don’t see women walking around wearing those kind of hats, super-hero or not. The nun chucks are kind of out of left field, and a bit incongruous to the nature of the Question and how he/she would operate.

Kplan, these were done for my own reference and consistency in drawing a character I haven’t drawn before. I routinely do these for myself when starting a new gig. They aren’t meant to evoke anything other than “here’s what I look like.” Methinks you’re expecting just a little too much from a peek at my reference turnarounds…!

You’ll get your mystery starting in ‘TEC #854. I’m asking you to hang on a little before you judge. I’m telling you, these scripts I’m getting from Greg are pretty damned good.

It’s got no oomph, and I don’t feel like I’m looking at — as someone else said — a “modern day pulp hero.” It has no mystery. At first I thought it was the whole female thing, then perhaps I thought maybe it was that Montoya is, generally, just less interesting and less of an enigma, than Vic Sage was, but then I remembered the old logo for “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?”…that evoked FAR MORE mystery and wonder for me (and I was in my 20s when that show was around, so I’ve got no emotional connection to it).

In sum: bleh.

I’m psyched and I fully look forward to this run joining GOTHAM CENTRAL, Brubaker and Cooke’s CATWOMAN, and Greg’s earlier run on ‘TEC as one of the best Batman-related series of the modern era. June can’t come fast enough.

And I’m not buying THIS take on The Question, either.

Why does DC miss the “core essence” of these heroes… and screw them up so badly.(Will he put some Charlton hero’s head on ice???)

It was “criminal” what they did to Peter Cannon..Thunderbolt and PeaceMaker… and to the other Charlton characters.

DC… Dan… look at the characters…and see who they are..and do them better.
Don’t contort them beyound our ability to “buy” them.!!

And the only reason Vic Sage died of cancer was so that Rucka could easily shoehorn her into his place and make it look like a “valid” sell to the audience. “Oh look, not only did Vic train her, he wanted her to take his place.” Never mind that if the writers didn’t decide to give him cancer, he wouldn’t have needed to do so in the first place!

This just smirks of DC’s stagnant creative storytelling attempts to create “new female heroes.” In this case, she also happens to be lesbian alongside the new Bat-Woman. What a coincidence. I’m looking at you Rucka and Didio.

How quaint. And totally stupid. Watch for this to fail. No way the Renee Montoya Question will ever get her own ongoing series, even with the pathetic ploy to drum up interest with a backup adventure in Detective. Might as well ship her off to Birds of Prey where B-list characters can thrive.

Detective will sell well for the first few issues with the curiosity factor, but will slowly drop off and by six months Batwoman and/or this fake Question will be gone.

And after reading Grant’s horrible take on the DCU in Final Crisis, I fear for his take on E4.

Vic death was so forced and pushing Rene Montoya into the role just leaves me disinterested in the Question mantle.

I would’ve love to see DC stay true to there “Action Heroes” and find writers that would make them shine instead of giving us “Replacement Characters”. Enough’s enough already.

I hope ALL of the Charlton characters get new lives, even if its by passing the torch. A new generation of “Action Heroes” in ongoing roles in the DCU is long overdue.

This way, we get to have our cake AND eat it too! Everyone wins!
