You may have seen earlier this week when Newsarama broke the scoop about Cully Hamner (Blue Beetle, Black Lightning: Year One) having signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics.
But his collaborator, Greg Rucka, has posted on his LJ account some interesting news in a post titled “Question Everything“:
So now I can talk about the fact that Cully and I are doing the co-feature that will begin running in Detective Comics #854, the Batwoman debut issue, this June. Starting with four eight-page chapters, then expanding to ten-pages an issue, and he’s been drawing, and it look incredible, and no, I can’t share the pages with you.
But wait — you already knew that? Well, you probably hadn’t seen these attached design images:
…Now discuss. I particularly liked the note about Charlie’s hat.
March 27th, 2009 at 7:54 am
Wow, looks great! Will put this up. Wonder how it will fit in with the Global Peace Agency, if at all.
March 27th, 2009 at 7:54 am
Well, it looks like Detective Comics just went on my “must read” list. Rucka had some interesting interaction between Tot and Renee in the last mini (honestly…the only part of it that I really liked). And I was concerned that Cully might not be the right artist for this….but those sketches knock me out. Can’t wait!
March 27th, 2009 at 7:59 am
I just can’t get interested in this version of The Question. She’s just a superheroine; even Dennis O’Neil’s exchanging of Steve Ditko’s character for a different character based on the design had a unique philosophical angle.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:00 am
Have to admit the art’s nice, though, and I like the work.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:05 am
Cully is one of the best. Detective is gonna be a hell of book.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:07 am
I’m still on the fence about the Renee version of the Question as well. But I do think that Cully is one of the most underrated artists in the industry and definitelly deserves more attention. I’m excited for this.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:25 am
I’m not keen on Renee. Vic is MY Question. Rucka managed to find a way to make me care about Renee anyway though. I was already on Detective for the awesome JHWIII art, but now it’s more of a lock for me.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:30 am
I wonder if there are any plans to use Richard Dragon (if they even can). “Trained by the best” – this made me think of him (though it could mean Batman, or even Vic, I suppose).
March 27th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Duh – forgot about 52. Thought I’d had enough coffee by now.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:45 am
“Wow, looks great! Will put this up. Wonder how it will fit in with the Global Peace Agency, if at all.”
Probably / hopefully it’s completely ignored. Haven’t seen too many efforts racing to follow on the plot-line or thematic heels of Final Crisis since it wrapped.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:54 am
except the 4 six issue miniseries
March 27th, 2009 at 8:55 am
and yeah it looks good. Did Renee always use nun chaku, or is this new?
March 27th, 2009 at 8:58 am
I’m not a die-hard Cully fan but these images do excite me.
Renee looks so smooth and kick-ass. I really hope they let Rucka go with his gut on this one and not dilute who she is.

ya…. Nothing at all except four six issue minis…. BFTC…… Mentions in a issue of JLA….. But nothing else….
March 27th, 2009 at 9:08 am
I am also among the Renee Question agnostics – she was fine as a cop, and I don’t think she has been used well as Charlie’s heir, but I also think that Rucka loves writing her and is the only one who should be writing her.
But I LOVE this art. Seriously. And I love that Tot will be along for the ride and that this seems to be about Charlie’s legacy as much as about Renee’s journey.
March 27th, 2009 at 9:20 am
I love Renee as the QUESTION. People complained about characters dying and being instantly replaced. buy with Renee…they took a whole year to develop the death of Vic and the bond with Renee so that the mantle was passed on over a year long story.
March 27th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Three for three Cully, now you need to do the Captain Atom and Nightshade redesigns! And if DC ever gets Thunderbolt back i’d love to see your take. In case you don’t know what i’m talking about, Cully has redesigned more Charlton characters than any other artist, Blue Beetle, Peacemaker and now The Question.
Judomaster was relaunched in JSA with the Kingdom Come costume, and Son of Vulcan was relaunched over five years ago.
I doubt we’ll ever see Iron Corporal, Doctor Graves, Fightin’ 5, Killjoy (E-Man backup by Ditko), Mercury Man, Mr. Muscles, Nature Boy, Prankster, Yellowjacket, or Zaza the Mystic relaunched.
March 27th, 2009 at 10:29 am
This looks great! When DC announced that they would be bringing back co-features, a Batwoman/Question pairing was a no-brainer. Not only are they both written by Rucka, they also have terrific artists.
So what’s it gonna be, folks, DC’s co-features or Marvel’s “… eight pages of Director’s Cut extras!”? Give me a break.
March 27th, 2009 at 11:17 am
I hope Batman never comes back to Detective…I love the new line-up for this…I like the idea of using the title for different characters in 2 features.
For the first time in forever, DC has some plans in motion that I’m excited about.
March 27th, 2009 at 11:24 am
Also not wild about the nunchuck – Renee always seemed more of a “baseball bat” wielder to me. And I’ll miss the ponytail. But other than that, those pictures sure look pretty.
March 27th, 2009 at 11:38 am
The Question as Katy Keene. Interesting. Not to say that it won’t work, or even be really, really good. But interesting. But nunchaku, no matter how effective, are quite a cliché. I think it would be more creative, and more intimidating, if, like Hannibal Lecter, or Bullseye, she could make use of any random objects in her vicinity at the moment.
March 27th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
hope they collect it separately, like they did for doctor thirteen
March 27th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
looks good.
March 27th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Can’t wait for Detective. These characters have been waiting since 52 for a place to really shine.
March 27th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Not that I care really (I’ll still be picking it up), but isn’t DC worried that Detective may carry more than a few lewd taglines amongst readers? “Detectives hate D—s” or “The Lesbian Book”, for instance.
March 27th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Man, I was a bit uncomfortable with this latest iteration of the Question character until now, but Greg Rucka knows how to make compelling crime stories that fit street-level characters such as the Question like a glove and Cully Hamner just showed me that he has what it takes in the art department to make it work! He made she look a bit like Vic Sage but looking sweet and modern at the same time. I will definitely check this out!
March 27th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
I was going to save myself money and not buy all of the new Bat-books coming out. It just keeps getting harder to resist. While I miss Vic, I trust Rucka to do great things with Rene while honoring what’s come before. I might be more interested in this than in the Batwoman part.
March 27th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
ya, looks good. ‘but I miss Vic!
What was wrong with a male … The Question???
Creative problems.
Let’s see an alternative Charlton world with the Charlton gang:
The real Captain Atom.
the real Blue Beetle… Ted Kord!
the real Nightshade!
The “real” Question… Vic Sage!
the real PeaceMaker!
the Real Judo-Master!
the Real Peter Cannon… Thunderbolt!!
I’m preety unhappy the way DC has ruined the “real” thing!
You can make amends, DC,… in an Alternative World kind of way!!
March 27th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
And have Cully do it!! Geeesh!!
March 27th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I still feel this should be in it’s own book and not Detective.
March 27th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
“But nunchaku, no matter how effective, are quite a cliché.”
Really? who else uses nun chaku, beyond donatello (i think)
March 27th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
It seems to me that DC is focusing on characters that were once great but because of a constant need for change in the modern medium is causing it to fall flat on it’s face. This is horrible in my opinion(good design but I don’t care about the character) and much like Dini’s boring run on Detective, this has the smell of something that will not progress anything; not even sales.
March 27th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
They look great. I especially like the “street-level” turtle neck look. Has that modern day pulp hero look.
March 27th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Captainzero, your prayers have been answered. Grant Morrison is doing a book about Earth-4, which is essentially the Charlton earth before it was bought by DC.
This way, we get to have our cake AND eat it too! Everyone wins!
March 27th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Is it my imagination, or does Professor Aristotle Rodor look like Denny O’Neil?
I hope ALL of the Charlton characters get new lives, even if its by passing the torch. A new generation of “Action Heroes” in ongoing roles in the DCU is long overdue.
March 27th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
I’ll be spending a little extra on a comic for pages I have no intention of reading (just great). Bette Kane and Batwoman will get me to buy Detective instead of dropping it after the announcement of a Montoya/Question co-feature.
Vic death was so forced and pushing Rene Montoya into the role just leaves me disinterested in the Question mantle.
I would’ve love to see DC stay true to there “Action Heroes” and find writers that would make them shine instead of giving us “Replacement Characters”. Enough’s enough already.
On a positive note I like Cully’s art.

I don’t like Renee as The Question. I refuse to buy any book her character appears in until Vic Sage returns.
Detective will sell well for the first few issues with the curiosity factor, but will slowly drop off and by six months Batwoman and/or this fake Question will be gone.
And after reading Grant’s horrible take on the DCU in Final Crisis, I fear for his take on E4.
March 28th, 2009 at 2:33 am
The Renee Montoya version of the Question is just ridiculous. Aside from looking just idiotic in a man’s suit and hat, there is no creative spark in her that would qualify her to be The Question. Where is the paranoia, the relentless drive to find the truth, the eccentricity? That is all replaced by a sense of “upholding the mantle.” How novel.
And the only reason Vic Sage died of cancer was so that Rucka could easily shoehorn her into his place and make it look like a “valid” sell to the audience. “Oh look, not only did Vic train her, he wanted her to take his place.” Never mind that if the writers didn’t decide to give him cancer, he wouldn’t have needed to do so in the first place!
This just smirks of DC’s stagnant creative storytelling attempts to create “new female heroes.” In this case, she also happens to be lesbian alongside the new Bat-Woman. What a coincidence. I’m looking at you Rucka and Didio.
How quaint. And totally stupid. Watch for this to fail. No way the Renee Montoya Question will ever get her own ongoing series, even with the pathetic ploy to drum up interest with a backup adventure in Detective. Might as well ship her off to Birds of Prey where B-list characters can thrive.
March 28th, 2009 at 7:03 am
Shame Montoya isn’t the main feature in ‘tec or I’d be picking it up, Batwoman just doesn’t interest me.
March 28th, 2009 at 8:00 am
should have kept the ponytail thats all I’m saying
March 28th, 2009 at 8:11 am
Really enjoyed Dini’s run on Detective and his leaving was making me plan to drop the title. Now seeing this I think I will keep getting it after all. The Question storyline in 52 was a major reason I enjoyed that title and I have enjoyed all of Renee’s appearances since. This looks great.
March 28th, 2009 at 10:41 am
Steve Bates: “Is it my imagination, or does Professor Aristotle Rodor look like Denny O’Neil?”
March 28th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Renee Montoya as the Question is like getting one lousy character for the price of two good ones.
March 28th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Danny,
That’s great. Wonderful news!! Can I ask… where did you read about it?? I would like to see “what’s shakin’”!!
thanks,… more than you know!!
March 28th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I agree with Bryan:
And I’m not buying THIS take on The Question, either.
Nice art… but it should have..and could have …been used on Vic Sage.!!
I worry a little about Grant’s take on these heroes, too…
Why does DC miss the “core essence” of these heroes… and screw them up so badly.(Will he put some Charlton hero’s head on ice???)
It was “criminal” what they did to Peter Cannon..Thunderbolt and PeaceMaker… and to the other Charlton characters.
DC… Dan… look at the characters…and see who they are..and do them better.
Don’t contort them beyound our ability to “buy” them.!!
Lesbians… how cutting edge progressive of you, Dan. Just what we want to see. The Question and Batwoman in bed together!! NOT!!
March 28th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Dan Didio… do you come with batteries on this one??
March 28th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Cully & Greg – If you’re reading this, feel free to ignore the haters. They’re just trying their damndest to keep the “fanboys hate it when top-tier titles have female leads” stereotype alive and kicking.
I’m psyched and I fully look forward to this run joining GOTHAM CENTRAL, Brubaker and Cooke’s CATWOMAN, and Greg’s earlier run on ‘TEC as one of the best Batman-related series of the modern era. June can’t come fast enough.
March 28th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
I can’t help it, as much as I normally love Cully’s work, all I can think of when I look at these pictures is Where’s the dotted line?
They remind me of the paper doll cut-outs of Betty and Veronica’s outfits in the old Archie books.
It’s got no oomph, and I don’t feel like I’m looking at — as someone else said — a “modern day pulp hero.” It has no mystery. At first I thought it was the whole female thing, then perhaps I thought maybe it was that Montoya is, generally, just less interesting and less of an enigma, than Vic Sage was, but then I remembered the old logo for “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?”…that evoked FAR MORE mystery and wonder for me (and I was in my 20s when that show was around, so I’ve got no emotional connection to it).
In sum: bleh.

Kplan, these were done for my own reference and consistency in drawing a character I haven’t drawn before. I routinely do these for myself when starting a new gig. They aren’t meant to evoke anything other than “here’s what I look like.” Methinks you’re expecting just a little too much from a peek at my reference turnarounds…!
You’ll get your mystery starting in ‘TEC #854. I’m asking you to hang on a little before you judge. I’m telling you, these scripts I’m getting from Greg are pretty damned good.
March 29th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
D. Peace, I could care less whether or not top tier titles have female characters. I only care about good story-telling and good characters, period. Brubaker’s Catwoman was great. But lets face it, we would error in saying that it was a financially top tier title by any stretch of the imagination. Andreyko’s Manhunter was great too, a character with a valid back-story and narrative I quite enjoyed.
But the Renee Montoya Question? Hardly.
When perfectly good characters have been sacrificed in order to develop needless perversions of themselves, that’s when I become angry. Vic Sage had a purity about him, a philosophical edge that was in it’s own way a super-power. Renee Montoya has cop-instincts and a lesbian background?
A Diomedian swap if I ever heard of one.
Greg Rucka, if you are reading this, I honestly think your attempts to create female superheroes have been lacking. Sasha Bordeaux, Bat-Woman, and The Question among the list. Sasha and Renee would have been more enjoyable to read had they remained non-superpowered. I don’t feel you had a valid reason to turn them into super-heroes beyond, “Well I love writing these characters…but the only way they can stay around for me to write them is if I gave them super-powers to earn their keep.” And the Kat Kane Bat-Woman is just a bland concept. She’s female bat-man. Check. She’s lesbian. Check. She’s Jewish! Check. I suppose that makes her three-dimensional…?
I agree with the poster above who predicts it will made good sales in the first six months, then drop off into obscurity. At which point they may change up the Detective title again. It’s Dan Didio’s philosophy of, “The great thing about comics is that you can try again if something doesn’t work the first time.” That’s great Dan, but not if you keep screwing things up repeatedly.
Cully, I loved your work on Blue Beetle and Red. However, aside from my feelings on this Renee Montoya Question, I will be honest about your designs. I don’t get a sense of any femininity in your sketches. In real life I don’t see women walking around wearing those kind of hats, super-hero or not. The nun chucks are kind of out of left field, and a bit incongruous to the nature of the Question and how he/she would operate.
March 29th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
I dislike the idea of Renee using nunchuks, they seem really dangerous and unsafe. Why not give her brass knuckles?
But the art. ASDLYGRAW3YLG. I would so pay 4$ for 8 pages of Renee looking like that. Practical hair! Awesome clothing! References to Vic (and there had BETTER BE A LOT OF THEM D:<)!
March 30th, 2009 at 7:02 am
I really liked Vic as the Question, but the transition was so well-handled and part of such an enjoyable story that I can’t help but appreciate Renee now. And if I really start to miss Vic, I can always just go back and read my O’Neil Question issues.
I didn’t think that ‘Tec could be made into a more appealing package than it already was, but this has certainly got me pumped. Can’t wait!
March 30th, 2009 at 7:49 am
“They remind me of the paper doll cut-outs of Betty and Veronica’s outfits in the old Archie books.”
The Question Paper-Doll cut-out book.
This is money just waiting to be made.
And I gotta say again, this is some beautiful. Like Alex Toth good. Clean lines, expressive characters…this is gonna be entertaining.
March 31st, 2009 at 3:54 am
Cully Hamner exclusive? Someone at DC really knows talent. This guy is one of the best and most under-rated. He’s so talented. His artwork is deceptively simple and so beautifully elegant. His Blue Beetle was so much fun. It’s going to be a HUGE treat to have him on The Question. It’s a great idea to have Renee wearing different clothes rather than a set costume. Cully’s notes make good sense, especially that she’s “low-maintenance” yet stylish. I love when a great artist meets a great character. I hope DC works Cully hard and we see a lot of his work.
April 8th, 2009 at 7:50 am
One of the things I’ve always loved about the Question is that you can wear that mask with *anything* and be recognizably the Question. It gives the artist enormous flexibility and the Question the ability to show up anywhere, blending in while standing out.

Why does ‘Tot’ look like the British Chancellor of the Exchequer alistair darling? Well Tot has a personality.
April 26th, 2010 at 1:13 am
I asked my self det same thing:)
