BRIDGET JONES' DIARY is based on PRIDE & PREJUDICE, as well, though many of Elizabeth's motives were unfulfilled or outright removed by Renee Zellweger's character in the movie. At least Colin Firth, Mr. Darcy from the ultra-perfect BBC mini-series, reprised his role as Darcy for DIARY. That was a neat little nod of the hat.

>> After all, who wants to read a book where the heroines’ sole employment is wafting around annoying men and being annoyed by them? >>

Millions.

Of course, they got rather more out of it than that.

>> Updating Austen to a modern setting would be nearly impossible–the nuances of class and social interaction would be lost nowadays, though class certainly isn’t gone from our problems.>>

Have you seen CLUELESS?

That was Austen's EMMA, updated quite well to a modern setting.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is among my favorite novels ever -- but I'm looking forward to this version too. But I think you're giving short shrift to the original, by assuming stuff about what you'd think if you'd actually read any Austen that just ain't true.

I took a 400 level seminar in British Literature where we read every novel Jane Austen had ever written, including the one she didn't finish, and I have to say that boiling down Elizabeth's existence to "the heroines’ sole employment is wafting around annoying men and being annoyed by them" is a bit unfair to one of Austen's most compelling protagonists.

The original is a fantastic book and, speaking also as a disciple of the zombie apocalypse, I've been looking forward to this mash-up since I heard about it here months ago. Knowing that you liked it, having picked up on some of your sensibilities since your arrival, I'm doubly excited for it.

Thanks for the review.
