MySpace’s My Cup O’Joe: Diggle to Daredevil and more

March 20th, 2009
Author Troy Brownfield

In addition to revealing the above cover to Dardevil #500 by Marko Djurdjevic, this week’s My Cup O’ Joe at MySpace Comic Books with Joe Quesada discussed the fact that the Man Without Fear will be handled by now-Marvel-exclusive writer Andy Diggle.

Other choice bits from Joe?

Dark Reign will take us right about to the end of this year.”

“You may see a few smaller, “Planet Hulk”-sized events, but nothing quite as sweeping as a Civil War or Secret Invasion for a little while.”

“Andy will be playing a very, very large part in one of these “Planet Hulk”-sized events. At least one of them.”

“…if you want [more Gambit], there’s a one-shot about his origin coming out in June and more Gambit goodness in July.”

“Not only will Venom be playing the role of Dark Spider-Man in Dark Avengers, but he’ll also be headlining his own “Dark Reign” limited series: The Sinister Spider-Man.”

Quesada also had more to say about X-Men Forever, the rather intersting project wherein Chris Claremont and Tom Grummett will be picking up X-Men continuity from around issue #4 in 1991 as if Claremont had kept writing the book.

XMF‘s continuity is a unique beast. Marvel’s never done anything like this before, where we’re literally picking up from a storyline from 15 years ago and letting the creator go the path not traveled. By its very nature, it can’t be considered cannon to the existing universe proper, and with that comes the promise that there will be things that no X-fan would ever see coming, including the unexpected death of a character writer Chris Claremont is closely connected with (PS. Not who you think).

  1. Mark D. White Says:

So I guess they’re resuming DD’s old numbering? Where are they now, according to that?

  2. Mark D. White Says:

Just read the MySpace article – seems both Daredevil and Captain America are picking up their old numbering at 500 and 600 (respectively), and Diggle starts writing DD at #501 (coming this fall).

  3. KB Says:

Just when I started buying Daredevil because of Brubaker, they change writers! Sheeesh!

  4. Dave Phelps Says:

    DD’s at “#496″ and Cap’s at #596.

  5. snarfery Says:

Not that I dislike Diggle (only read a few things from him) but I want my Brubaker, seems like the guy has been cutting down on his Marvel work (dropping x-men and now DD) and I enjoy his stuff immensly. Please keep him on at least Cap.

  6. Mark Says:

I’m getting tired of this Dark stuff ALL OVER THE PLACE. Its getting to be rampant in everything like a disease. When are the characteristics of real heroes coming back????

  7. Mikey Boy Says:

That’s funny because 1991 was about the last time Chris Claremont did anything good.

  8. PhilipAMoore Says:

Dardevil sounds good to bad Diggle will only be on the title for twelve issues
there is only one series that I have seen Diggel do for a longer period of time and that is losers

    good day

  9. Kevin Tribelhorn Says:

Yes, I agree with snarfery, Brubaker needs to stay with Captain America as long as possible. As for Bru leaving Daredevil, sad but things eventually change anyway. But I think Cap need Bru and vice versa.

  10. Adrian Thawne Says:

I remember it was rumoured that Claremont wanted to kill off Wolverine and have him resurrected by the hand (before Millar did it). I wonder if this is the character he’ll kill off. He us closely linked to Wolvie after all.

  11. Frank Booth Says:

I like Diggle and I like Daredevil… BUT something tells me that the renumbering is just another excuse for Marvel to bump a $3 book up to $4. If that’s the case, I’m out. This $4 shit from a company that pulls in more than half the market share is getting tired.

  12. Brian Real Says:

Brubaker’s situation on Cap is the same as Johns on GL. I want to read as much as possible by them and I’m always disappointed when they have to leave a book to make time for something else, but they both have their one series that they absolutely should not leave for at least a few more years.

  13. Michael Says:

I think I’m agreeing with Frank Booth. A $3.99 price point is getting too steep. I’m finding I’m dropping more and more good books that I will want to read again and opting for the trades. It’s easier to find a run of a book on a shelf rather than in a longbox. I know the problem with that thinking is if everyone does it, sales on the individual issues will go down, and good books may not get made. That’s Marvel and DC’s problem, not mine. Mine is to buy as much as I can for the money I have.

  14. Bob Shubey Says:

    “Canon” not “cannon.”

  15. preston Says:

    >>DD’s at “#496″ and Cap’s at #596.<<

What about Hulk, has anyone figured when that will gturn 600?

  16. John Smith Says:

    Guys, 3.99 comics??…..my response….MININOVA!!

  17. bean6344 Says:

Potato not potatoe. Just kidding. Please cut Dan Quayle a break.

Back on topic. Kudos to Mr. Diggle. Hopefully he will have a long and memorable run of DD.

  18. Christopher Says:

    Oh, for Christ’s sake.

Either stop rebooting, or stop resuming original numbering. This worthless marketing maneuver is infuriating, and cheapens the value of a #1 launch. What’s the poing in getting excited about a relaunch if they’re just going to throw it back in with the old in a few months? Its simply a marketing ploy to get more people to pick up a book because its a #1.

  19. ScottyQuick Says:

Yeah! How dare they relaunch a book that was failing 11 years ago if they’re just going to resume the numbering!

  20. Lord Bane Says:

Cristopher – “Its simply a marketing ploy to get more people to pick up a book because its a #1.”

More people buying comics? F that!

Really, what’s the harm? If it gets people to try something they otherwise wouldn’t, hurray.

  21. kilroy Says:

Nope, the plan is to launch the book with a #1 again after Diggle’s run. But it won’t be followed until a special mini-series called Daredevil Disassembled: Battle for his Scowl. At that point, the new series that follows will end after 7 issues, after it is revealed that the Editor in Chief is an idiot who does not know how to manage any of these properties since taking the helm. By this point it’s not so much about the marketing gimmick as it is pissing the hell out of you.

Personally, I think triple digit numbers that high just make a book sound archaic.

  22. Ed Says:

Why on Earth would anyone want more Gambit?
And yeah, it looks really bad for a professional to let an official statement appear that says “cannon” when they mean “canon.” That’s strictly for drooling subtards on message boards.

  23. OCM Says:

Or maybe it’s for the drooling subtards like you that read the statements and get bent out of shape out of a typo.

Besides, since it’s typed up by the interviewer at Myspace perhaps it’s HIS fault that it’s cannon and not canon, and not Joe Quesada’s fault at all.

  24. mfactor0 Says:

I want more Gambit. Not everybody falls in line with the internet nerds and say that they don’t like the character.

  25. dave abbruzzese Says:

andy dirk diggler? i just want to see what they have planned for next year as part of the non avengers event. spiderman? another hulk event to relaunch incredible hulk? another stupid x-event? not many other corners of the marvel universe out there with multiple books. forget dardevil and punisher.
