Hey critics, did any of you see the new Wonder Woman DVD? How was it?

March 6th, 2009
Author J. Caleb Mozzocco

“Wonder Woman has always been considered the third most-important DC Comics superhero, behind Superman and Batman, but when it comes to an original DVD film, she beats them both.”
—Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly

“Some might try to dismiss Wonder Woman without a closer look—it’s an animated film and it’s direct-to-DVD—but they’d be fools to do so. This updated take on the classic warrior-in-a-strange-land tale is an enjoyable mix of butt kicking and empowered romantic comedy that will satisfy geek guys, gals and kids alike.”
— Ken Denmead, Wired

“I though the movie was great: beautiful, funny, well-written, and an altogether pleasure to watch… and watch again.”
—Kellen Rice, Blast Magazine

“Well, that was disappointing”
—Johanna Draper Carlson, Comics Worth Reading

“This is not a perfect film. A first act dogfight goes on much too long, and the story is still a relatively conventional origin story. Furthermore, I still bemoan the inexplicable demand for a mere 75 minute run time, especially in a film that is aimed at older kids. But in every other way, Wonder Woman is a terrifically entertaining action picture, with fully drawn characters, clever dialogue, and a clear and specific point of view. And the final scene provides an absolutely perfect capper that will have fans and geeks grinning from ear to ear.”
—Scott Mendelson, Film Threat

“[W]hat the non-comics-reading world needs is a property that allows them access to a character whose potential has virtually never been lived up to and the upcoming Wonder Woman direct-to-DVD animated feature from Warner Brothers may go a long way to improve that state of affairs.”
—Steve Bunche, The Beat

Um, I reviewed it for this very site.

One negative review, and that person and her husband have both been fired by DC in the past. I’m guessing I’ll check this out.

Indeed you did, Sarah, and it’s got me interested in seeing the movie. I think I’ll wait to pick it up though, since Gotham Knight ended up being such a big disappointment to me (I think the concept, as an Adult Swim weekly show, still has great potential though). I paid for that one new, and now I see copies in used DVD bins frequently. I think I’ll wait a few months and get WW on the cheap, unless Amazon’s got it at a nice markdown. I’ll have to check… I think the one disc version will suffice.

Anyhow, I hope this is as good as most people think. I really liked WW on the JL/JLU series, and I like her when she’s written well in the funny books. Sadly, I just haven’t too many examples of that in time. I also hope this is the start of really good things for both a live action WW movie, and more good animated JLU films (I am DEFINITELY looking forward to the GL film).

Now if they would just be willing to make these movies longer than a mere 75 minutes.

  4. Alan Poole Says:

This movie was astounding, aside from the quickness of the pacing in certain dialogue scenes, which took away from the weight it should have had. I was floored by the animation.

  5. C. Towns Says:

    the movie was damn good.

  6. Daniel Says:

It was witty and kicked ass, 2 thumbs up.

So wait, the ONLY negative review from the original piece and all the links from Steve belongs to Johanna Draper Carlson?

IO9, Wired, IGN, Newsarama, CBR, ScreenRant, Ugo, AICN, Film Threat, The Beat, Blast and EW . . . they ALL liked to loved it, and Johanna Draper Carlson is the only dissenting voice.

    That’s funny.
