Suicide Squad casting call!

Now that we’ve reported that Amanda Waller’s favorite group of scoundrels, ne’er-do-wells, and out-and-out criminals might be hitting the silver screen, the real question on everyone’s mind — which villains will make the cut? And who might be playing them?

Rick Flag: The glue that binds this machine together. A leader who is ruthless enough to keep this band of crooks in line. How about Max Martini from Saving Private Ryan?

Captain Cold: An underappreciated villain next to icons like the Joker and Lex Luthor, this is a guy who not only shoots ice, but oozes character. If they want to stick to the grizzled old vet characterization from the Geoff Johns run of the Flash, I’d say Chris Cooper from American Beauty would be on the top of the list.

Deadshot: Another mainstay of the group, Deadshot’s deadpan honesty and downright scummy behavior makes him a jerk you love to hate. Yet his perfect aim also gives plenty of opportunities for some hard-core action sequences. If he’s not too overexposed after his turns in Watchmen and the Losers, how’s about Jeffrey Dean Morgan?

Bronze Tiger: The squad’s resident tough guy (and considering their membership, that’s saying a lot). He’s also the least amoral of the bunch (which also says a lot), given his relationship with Vixen. But the square haircut has got to go. Shemar Moore from the dearly departed Birds of Prey is a possibility.

Nightshade: With her shadow-wielding abilities, Nightshade can even make Superman stop in his tracks. This one isn’t quite as hard, considering she wears a mask — Summer Glau from Serenity could certainly play the part.

Count Vertigo: A smarmy royal with the power to turn your world inside out. Paul Bettany I think could pull this part off, so long as he keeps his accent to an obnoxious-enough level.

Poison Ivy: Boy, this is a character that’s seen better days. While I’m not sure if we’ll see the sultry siren of science since the debacle that was Batman and Robin, if we saw a new Poison Ivy, I would nominate Portia de Rossi from Ally McBeal.

Amanda Waller: CCH Pounder, from Face/Off and the Shield. ‘Nuff said.

What say you, Rama readers?

CCH Pounder is a terrific actress, plus she already provided the voice of Waller in the JLU cartoon.

  2. Ken B. Says:

The guy who played Lt. Daniels on The Wire should be Bronze Tiger.

  3. Shaun Says:

Yes, Ms. Pounder is a great choice… Not the least of which is because she already knows (even “owns”?) the character.

But I have to ask… What’s with her name?

  4. Richard J. Marcej Says:

Wait-a-minute, yeah, I know he’s “currently dead” in the DC Universe, but any Suicide Squad film HAS to have the original Captain Boomerang!

  5. Troy Brownfield Says:

    @Shaun

Her full name is Carol Christine Hilaria Pounder. She went by C.C.H. Pounder in early credits, then just made it CCH going forward.

  6. Rich Says:

    CCH Pounder is a definite.

I’m so-so on the rest of the casting, but Chris Cooper as Captain Cold is genius. Bravo, sir.

  7. Kevin Huxford Says:

    Captain Cold? Poison Ivy?

Wouldn’t more appropriate inclusions be Captain Boomerang and Plastique?

  8. batmansgirl Says:

I want Robert Downey Jr as Deadshot. He was great in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, why not play another badass guy in this movie? Finish up Iron Man 2, then move on to this character, please.

  9. Rev. O.J. Flow Says:

    Sam Rockwell for Deadshot, please.

  10. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

CCH Pounder’s best genre moment was in Tales from the Crypt: demon Knight, where she plays an amputee. Making her last stand against the demon (Billy Zane, who was DAMN good), she hold her stump arm to him. “Are you surrendering? he asks. “No, I’m givin’ you the finger”.

Having said that, Chandra Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy could be very good as well. She’s got the build and the attitude – I get the impression she could barrel through a wall.

    Fabulous choices all, BTW.

  11. Filip Sablik Says:

Paul Bettany as Captain Vertigo is a great pick!

When suggesting Portia de Rossi you cite Ally McBeal? Wouldn’t the geek audience be more excited by the Arrested Development connection?

  13. Zoink Says:

I gotta agree that Captain Boomerang & Plastique seem like they would make more sense, especially since they won’t want too crazy over the top powers in it I’m guessing so it’ll be more dark like Dark Knight and those two would fit better in a movie then Cold and Ivy I think and Hugo Weaving would make a good Boomerang I think.

  14. Jeff Says:

Patricia Belcher, from Bones, is the only actress I can think of to play Amanda Waller. This wonderful actress takes command of every scene she’s in and is very good at ordering people around. I can’t imagine anyone else in the part. CCH Pounder would be a second choice I guess! :-)

My first thought was “David needs to watch Arrested Development.”
