Tell Me What to Read: The I Got Nothin’ Edition

February 24th, 2009
Author Sarah Jaffe

It’s one of those bizarre weeks where there are NO comics coming out that I’m regularly reading. They always make me feel like a lousy comics fan, so I’m really desperate for your help this week, guys. The budget’s a bit tight, but I can afford a few comics, so I need your suggestions.

And since I’m in such dire straits, go ahead and recommend something older that you think I should pick up. Got a favorite OGN that doesn’t get enough attention? A series that doesn’t get enough love?

(I did indeed read something new–and awesome–last week, but it’s going to get its own post in a day or so. But I want to hear from you.)

  1. Preston Says:

Wait, Incredible Hercules comes out this week so you’re telling me you’re not reading that??

You should definitely check it out, the book’s a solid mix of humor, buddy adventures and mythological stories. Plus Herc #126, the one out this week, is a jumping-on issue which is extra sized to tell Hercules’ origin for the first time, and set-up future arcs. I would definitely proclaim that it is currently my favorite series.

Another suggestion would be Mighty Avengers #22, it’s the second part of Dan Slott’s recently helmed run, so you could probably find part one, #21, pretty easily. It’s essentially a return to epic old-school Avengers stories, away from all the grim and gritty Bendis era Avengers.

  2. Rich Says:

Ha! Tomorrow is one of my heavier days lately in terms of my pull. Three Avengers books, Incredible Herc, and Captain America. I’ll be getting Thunderbolts too. I’ll second Preston in saying you should check out Herc’s book if you haven’t lately.

I’m sure I’ll get that Starman Omnibus Vol. 2 HC eventually, but not tomorrow.

  3. Josh Says:

You don’t read Green Lantern, Captain America, Nova, or New Avengers? You’re missing out!

  4. Joe Says:

Are you not a Rick Remender fan? Two of his indie books are coming out; Fear Agent, and Gigantic. But I’m not sure how new reader friendly Fear Agent is.
Mouse Guard: Winter #5 is coming out which is a gorgeous book.
And does nobody buy Soleil titles but me? Ythaq: Forsaken World #3 is coming out, but it’s #3 of 3 so you might be better off reading 1 and 2 before picking up the new issue.

  5. O. Says:

Try Thunderbolts. I’m not in love with it yet but that’s what I’m getting new.

  6. Scott D Says:

IDW’s one-shot “Doctor Who: The Whispering Gallery” features *gorgeous* art from Ben Templesmith and, well, the Doctor. What’s not to love? :)

  7. Douglas Says:

Given your tastes as you’ve described them here–Vertigo stuff, unnerving things, Neil Gaiman–I’d say that if you haven’t read Charles Burns’ graphic novel “Black Hole,” I bet you’d love it. (And would it help to sell you on it to note that Gaiman was working for a while on a film adaptation of it?)

  8. The Hipster Dad Says:

I’ll second Scott’s suggestion of “The Whispering Gallery.” Also, the hardback volume three of “Black Jack,” with the bonus story, if you haven’t already picked up the paperback.

  9. Brian Says:

If you’ll accept the suggestion, Starman Omnibus Volume 2 ships this week (or is scheduled to). Really beautiful stuff.

    Cheers,

    B

  10. Jay Faerber Says:

May I suggest Dynamo 5 #20? You can even read the first issue online to see if you’d like it.
