“There is no Kryptonite.”
The Wachowski Brothers, who burst into genre film royalty with the Matrix and made their own adaptation of Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta, might be taking another stab at comic book movies, Ain’t It Cool News has reported.
According to the rumor, which allegedly comes from Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue, the Wachowski Brothers’ next film was slated to be… Plastic Man. While McTeigue was slated to be Second Unit director, shakeups around Warner Bros. put the film in limbo. But what makes this even more juicy is this:
- Bryan Singer has refused to undertake a re-boot of the Superman franchise and has left the Executives at WB with no choice but to take a fresh creative direction.
This is it….
- He stated the Wachowski Brothers had been approached to re-boot the franchise as a trilogy and they are currently reviewing their options as its like being asked to take the final play in a superbowl final. Says if they do agree, he will likely either succumb to providing second unit support on the movie or will champion the directorship of Plastic Man – He started to giggle as he stated its like a young child for the Brothers and they wont give that up easily.
Hm. What makes this all the more interesting is that the Matrix has apparently long been on the minds of Warner Bros. in terms of a Superman movie. AICN reported way back in 2002 about a Superman script by J.J. Abrams that had tons of martial arts violence… According to the poster: “You’ll believe a franchise can suck!!”
That said, hopefully if the Wachowskis jump on board — on either project — they’ll make the stylistic choreography fit. So what say you? Plastic Man or Superman trilogy?

I’m all for this, IF the Wachowski’s are committed to remaining true to the character, his origin, his surroundings, and his supporting cast. This means Supes wears the tradtional blue and red cape, he flies, none of this nonsense of Luthor also being Kryptonian, or any of the other garbage that went on while Jon Freakin’ Peters was involved in trying to make a Superman movie.
I’m also glad to see Bryan Singer moving on. I like the guy fine, as I loved both The Usual Suspects and the first two X-Men movies (esp X2). But his Superman was so wrong in so many ways. Trying to do some quasi-continuation of the Donner movies was the biggest problem by far. I want an epic, cosmic adventure that features legitimate challenges to Superman. Two-bit hoodlum Luthor and his dopey sidekicks were never a true challenge; not without really dumbing Supes down (and falling back on the “kryptonite Krutch” again and again).
If they’re going to do Luthor again, PLEASE make him like the Luthor we’ve seen since the 1986 Byrne reboot and make him a ruthless, powerful billionaire/industrialist with an insatiable appetite for power (but also, in his own twisted way, trying to make the world a better place as he sees it). I’d also recommend making him NOT the main character of the first film. Introduce him, but keep him somewhat benign at first, with just a hint of menace, and let his plan unfold over the course of the series.
But c’mon… It’s time to start seeing villains like Darkseid, Brainiac, maybe Metallo or Parasite, and possibly Doomsday, on the big screen.
I say start completely from scratch, re-tell the origin but make it *brief* (and not as dull and sterile as Krypton looked in 1978), recast Lois with someone who looks like an adult (I can take or leave Brandon Routh), and don’t saddle Superman with a chiild again.

Oh, and if I enjoy a Wachowski Bros. Superman film even half as much as I enjoyed V For Vendetta, I will be very, very happy guy.

I’m all for this– I have never been disappointed by a Wachowski film (I know, I am one of few). The best thing is, as comics writers themselves, they’ll probably want to bring in as many of the guys at DC as they can and will actually listen to them. You know, like how Marvel makes a movie.

Honestly, I think I’d rather seen them push the FX envelope again by doing a Plas movie.

Please let this NOT be true! The Bros shot their load after the Matrix sequels.

I really didn’t like Routh in the role. I know they thought the creepy resemblance to Reeve would let the movie coast on positive feelings of nostalgia, but instead it was like the “Uncanny Valley” effect. It’s like putting in cgi Reeve after we know he’s dead. It throws you out of the movie.
Much as we loved Reeve, it’s time to let him go. The next Superman has to look like Superman without looking like Christopher Reeve.

Well, Shaun pretty much said everything I wanted to say

After seeing Speed Racer I’d love to see their take on Superman. Might be the closest I ever get to seeing a live action version of “All Star Superman”
