I thought that they went through all of the troubles that young couples do, compounded by the Parker luck and Peter's super-hero alter ego. Especially during JMS' run I thought he did a brilliant job of really fleshing out Mary Jane as a character and wrote their relationship in a very realistic way: troubled with ups and downs but ultimately sweet and validating.
