Sarah, was Colleen joking when she said boys will read comics about girls if it has an upskirt shot?

I agree with Sarah Jaffe. I didn't think Y had a particularly sophisticatred view of the female characters. Watchmen is a masterpiece for a lot of reasons but I thought that the female characters portrayed therein were more interesting and complicated. It's hard to think of good female characters in mainstream comics because there are so few. Maybe 52 would be a good place to look, the famale detective is more than just one-dimensional. The series Powers I think has good characters too, male and female.

The book focuses on, follows, develops, and generally values three protagonists (Yorrick, Agent 355, & Dr. Mann). The two women aren't just supporting characters, their back stories and separate adventures are as important as Yorrick's.

Moreover, I do not see the problem with having a male as the titular character. When most comics are written and drawn by men, starring men, marketed for men, and frequently demean women, that's a problem. But Y the Last Man has taken modest steps to correct some of those problems, and criticizing it for having a man as the lead character is wrongheaded. If it does portray women in a cliched or sterotypical manner, then you have a point. But nether you nor Kesel have explained that assertion. I don't see anyone saying Y the Last Man is the feminist salvation of comics, but it's a step in the right direction.

Women don't have a hive mind? Well, I'll be, since that is exactly what I was suggesting in my last post.

Cheers,
Bob

I'll write about it another time.

The "best" character is not the one who's the nicest. It's the one who the entire book focuses on, follows, develops, and generally values.

And Bob, women do not have a hive mind. Nor do feminists. I'm sure there are books that you enjoy that other men don't enjoy. Same for women, even feminist women.

This was a great panel. I loved the story about Igle asking his female relatives what they thought of Supergirl's costume before he re-did it. Among other things, the panel is making me look forward to Palmiotti's Power Girl series all the more.

I was going to make exactly the same point as bob, above. i'm only up to issue 50, and while he certainly is the focus of the story, i don't see how you can say yorrick is "the best" character in Y the last man. He's a real a-hole, imo. 355 is probably the "best" character in the book (so far), or that israeli chick. but 'rick is a pretty big jerk.

Sarah,

What exactly do you find cliched about the women in Y the Last Man? Several female friends (to play the feminists I know card) have thought it was a great comic. Yorrick is not the best character and the series deconstructing the traditional expectations for a male lead in a mostly female story is half the point.

Comics need more female protagonists in comics and more homosexuals and ethnic minorities while we're at it. But doesn't your statement "We don’t need books to be 100-to-1 female-to-male characters if the male character is still the focal point and best character" imply that females will only read books about female protagonists? If so, that is silly. We ought to be aiming for people of both genders enjoying comics featuring strong characters of both genders. Y the Last Man is a good early step in that direction.

Cheers,
Bob
