Pop culture website Gawker.com is running an article on their blog today taking pot shots at the New York Comic Con and its attendees. Featuring a number of pictures of attendees in costume, there’s no real “article” to accompany them but only the headline “Nerd Alert” and a nasty paragraph that makes jokes at the expense of both comic fans and New Jersey. Typical of Gawker, they cover this story without ever actually attending the convention, taking their photos from wire service offerings.

Gawker is worthless, an example of how the Internet can reduce any and all information to insult and innuendo. And their utter contempt for anything fannish is widely known. Their “coverage” of the 2007 controversy involving LiveJournal and fanfic writers portrayed all of them as deviants, and the recent cutbacks at LJ were treated as the inevitable result of fighting and losing to said deviants. (It was also inaccurate coverage.)
My best suggestion is ignore Gawker.

Hates me? Nothing I saw in the photos on Gawker represents me. Just because I enjoy reading comics doesn’t mean I like to play dress up.

Does anybody really pay attention to Gawker anyway? It is to entertainment news what Paris Hilton is to entertainment. Gossip Porn, and nothing more.
Pop Candy, on the other hand, at USAToday.com, is doing a pretty good job, I hear.

What’s Gawker and why in the world should I care? ^_^ That’s my attitude.

Oh come on, Gawker hates everyone and everything.
