If early reports are correct, the Flash may be running alongside a Green Lantern film soon enough.
IESB has reported that, according to multiple sources around Hollywood, Jonny Quest writer Dan Mazeau is currently writing a script for the Fastest Man Alive. While Flash producer Chuck Roven wouldn’t confirm if the hero would be Wally West or Barry Allen — or that Mazeau was still writing the script — he did say:
I was always a big fan of the comics. I was around for… Gosh, this is embarrassing, you know, the last two Flashes. The Flash that was the policeman and Kid Flash, Wally, and his uncle. Those are the two Flashes that I grew with, so I was excited to have the opportunity to try and see if I could actually translate those characters to the screen.
Me, I’m hoping this isn’t the Hollywood rumor mill at work. While we reported earlier that most of the DC slate was currently on hold, how cool would it be to see some Morrisonian superscience on the big screen? And that’s a Flash Fact.

Don’t get your hopes up DC fans.
January 30th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Why dont they just let Johns write it? He loves the flash so much, he’d probably do it for free. Especially if its Barry.
January 30th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Now secure Ryan Reynols for the part… hes perfect
January 30th, 2009 at 11:12 am
Waid or Johns should be involved in this.
January 30th, 2009 at 11:22 am
I hate to be so cynical, but it doesn’t fill me full of confidence that the dude couldn’t identify Barry by name, considering his supposed love of comics…
The Flash/Wally West is my favorite comic book character of all time, so if Warner Brothers effs this up I will be devastated!
January 30th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Let’s hope they do this right, explain it clearly and cast it well.
I don’t see them ever using a red costume though.
January 30th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Wally is the ONLY Flash for me so I’d want to see Ryan Reynolds play the part he was born to play.
January 30th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
whatever Flash is used (hopefully all 3 long-termers), I just hope they avoid emphasis of the origin except in reference to the Speed Force. Out of all 4, Bart’s origin is pretty keen–but it’s from inheritance. Out of the first 3, Barry’s origin is “ok”, but still kind of lame. Wally and Jay’s are just bleh. I just hope the crew behind this movie focus on the ensemble characters than the origin.
I’m also hoping the crew packs the movie with so much action and intensity that audiences won’t have time to catch their next breath.
as for the red suit…a bunch of friends always bring up the red suit as a lame aspect of the character. after thinking about it, I realized that if someone was running super fast, earth tones and grays are not the best colors to wear when crossing traffic. now bright red creates a moment of hesitation that a speedster would recognize, imo. it’s probably why police are drawn to hot red or bright yellow cars
easier to see/identify.

You know, it’s funny: Warner Bros. dropped David Goyer because his script was too dark. Then after The Dark Knight made a zillion dollars, they decided they wanted their superhero films to be dark. And now they’re starting over, rather than bringing back the script by the co-writer of Batman Begins?
I’m guessing that Goyer’s script was in part about Wally West taking up the mantle from Barry Allen, and now that DC has decided to reposition Barry Allen as the primary Flash, they don’t want to make a movie about his successor.
Just keep twisting that knife, DC.
January 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
IESB also reported that Tom Welling was going to be Superman in the Justice League movie, so be careful of the credibility of their reports.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
I hope they stick with the red costume. Its iconic but as we’ve seen in the Justice League cartoon and the Mortal Kombat vs. DCU, it can be adjusted. Then again if Batmans and Superman’s costumes can change, anyone’s can.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
I don’t see why they can’t do something with Barry and Wally. Because I think the greatest part of Wally is his growth from Kid Flash to Flash, not that he doesn’t have other great qualities. Unlike trying to put Robin in the Nolan Batman movies, I feel like Kid Flash would be an easy sell for this.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
“Jonny Quest writer”?! Huh?!
January 30th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
I highly doubt this is going to happen at all.
January 30th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
How hard can it be to do the Flash on the big screen? Really? Even with a limited budget, I think this can be done with a solid story behind it. Well, we’ll see…
January 30th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
I’d love it to be about both Barry and Wally.
January 30th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

this sounds terrible…it seems like for all he knows, the second flash was joe friday…
January 30th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I don’t want to be the one to say it but…I’m afraid WB will screw both the Green Lantern and The Flash films up…How I know this…well, they’ve only been good at bringing Sups and Bats to the big screen! And why have they been successful, because ppl know and love BATMAN and Superman…not because WB has done a good Job (except of course TDK and Batman Begins!!!)
Hope they don’t mess up though!
January 30th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Why does everyone say Ryan “Deadpool” Reynolds is “born for this”?
He’s already Deadpool!!! Now I personally think that Josh Hartnett or Ryan Gosling could pull off the role.
January 30th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
I must be missing something. Why is there a doubt about the red costume being used? Are people afraid he’d look like the devil or something?
While I’d love to see a Wally West Flash movie, I think it will be Barry Allen, considering Didio’s insistance on returning all of the main characters to their “classic” versions – and the great pains he’s gone to in order to resurrect Barry. A Wally West film would just undermine all of that. Besides, even the TV series had a Barry Allen Flash (with Wally West elements) while Wally was The Flash in the comics.
January 30th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
I guess its good news. I just don’t understand why evry super heroe has to be a movie. I grew up with the Hulk and Spiderman on TV. Why can’t some of these characters be on some of the pay channels in mini series? I don’t believe they can match the success of The Dark Knight and will be seen as failures by the company standards of profit if they don’t all make billions.
January 30th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
Bah… I take all this with a grain of salt. “Flash Fact”? I see nothing but rumor and conjecture here. As others have pointed out, a guy who wrote for Jonny Quest and a producer who claims to be some big fan but doesn’t know Barry’s name aren’t exactly stoking my enthusiasm.
Anyhow, if this were to somehow happen I’d side with making it about Wally. He’s, IMO, just a more fun character than Barry is. Barry, again IMO, just seems too white bread, too old fashioned.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Barry or anything, it’s just that I’ve read more of Wally as Flash (and we have Wally in the JL/JLU series). The old Flash TV show, with a variation on Barry, was OK for its time but that’s the direction I’d want to see this movie take. Having seen it again on DVD, it’s somewhat entertaing but also campy and simply not on the level of the better comic book films we’ve had in recent years.
I dunno, maybe something with both Barry and Wally would work. Maybe the baton could even be passed down to Wally at some point, if a first film is successful.
What happened to the Green Lantern movie anyhow? There was all this talk about definitely happening, now there’s been nothing of late. No casting, no nothing (they should cast Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan, BTW).
January 30th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
@NeoSamrai: There’s no way they’d do this movie and not do some kind of origin story. Flash isn’t as well-known as Supes or Bats, and I don’t think they’d risk trying to appeal to the masses without some kind of proper introduction to the character(s) and how he/they got that way.
January 30th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
I really hope this is true, and it’s Wally West. No offense to Barry Allen fans, but Wally is the greatest Flash ever.
January 30th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
@Dave: When the 1990 Flash TV series was in development, the network wanted him running around in a gray track suit. Seriously. Bilson & DeMeo got Dave Stevens (yes, Rocketeer Dave Stevens) to do a concept sketch, and that convinced the network that they could do the bright red costume.
So yeah, there could be issues with the costume.
January 30th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
The Flash is my favourite character.
I have every single issue of Wally’s run.
I have the TV series on DVD.
I would give my left nut for a great Flash movie about Wally West. (and my right nut for a great GL movie) Why DC decided against Goyer’s script is beyond me. The guy has proven his chops with Blade & Batman Begins, what’s the hold up??
There’s also no question in my mind that the scarlet speedster HAS to be dressed in scarlet!! Hell, the suit from a TV show 20 years ago STILL looks good! Imagine what they could cook up now.
January 31st, 2009 at 12:30 am
Okay, I’m going to say this once, and once only. Ryan Gosling was born to play Barry Allen. By everything holy, if Gosling plays Barry, we’ll get the perfect mixture of action and real, strong, acting ability. And then we’d just need a sweet, nice, Iris (Elizabeth Banks) , and some people who could pull off some rogues (Mirror Master, Captain Cold, Heatwave, Trickster), and Zoom as the main villain, and this, as fast as a SONICBOOM, will be a movie of the ages.
January 31st, 2009 at 12:42 am
Get Ryan Reynolds. He’s the perfect Flash.
Way better than that guy from the OC.
January 31st, 2009 at 1:14 am
I hope DC can take something away from the success of The Dark Knight AND Iron Man, the latter being a more colourful example of what CAN work on film when the source material drives the film.
Flash really does have the potential to do something very exciting to set itself apart in the glut of superhero blockbusters. Something that doesn’t have to be a dreary, track suited rehash of Batman, terrified of the spectacle of fiction.
January 31st, 2009 at 2:24 am
Rob, DC obviously had some problems with Goyer’s script.
Sure it was dark, and that’s what DC seem to be going for these days, however that’s only one aspect of a script.
The dialogue could’ve been off, the science could’ve been wrong. There’s any number of reasons DC opted out of Goyer’s script.
It could’ve been that Blade Trinity didn’t do too well and neither has Goyer’s other recent projects.
Personally I think it’s a good thing DC have someone else penning the script. It gives someone else other than Goyer a chance to shine.
And even if the movie is dark, as long as it’s realistic (which is what The Dark Knight really was) then I’m happy.
January 31st, 2009 at 9:18 am
…What’s realistic about the Flash? Let me answer for you–nothing. Moving at the speed of sound/light would burn you to a cinder, or the air itself would cut you to ribbons. The Speed Force pretty much HAS to exist to explain away all the fact that the Flash, essentially, breaks physics in half.
So nevermind the realism–just tell the best Flash story you can. I’m with Jimmy–right now I’m just hoping they cast it right.
Also: A Green Lantern movie and a Flash movie in a single summer would be a brilliant move by Warner Bros.
January 31st, 2009 at 11:45 am
^ WHat he said. It shouldn’t be realistic so much as crazy science concepts. The only realistic aspects should be the rogues
February 1st, 2009 at 12:49 am
The movie has to be epic. They have to show full use of the flash powers unlike what they did in superman returns which only had like 1 scene (The airplane scene) where you see superman use his major powers.
They should follow the writing scheme of Iron Man. A movie full of CG showing the full impact of The Flash’s powers with some controlled doses of comedy tossed in the mix while still maintaining the flow of the story and it’s seriousness.
February 1st, 2009 at 7:38 am
A convincing origin will be the key to this one. All comics to movies suffer from the ‘origin’ problem, ie no time to get to the story so the origin IS the story. If they throw in too many other characters it’ll be a disaster. Focus on the important elements in the same way Iron Man did. Superman Returns … what a absolute dud!
February 1st, 2009 at 9:43 am
You know what this film really needs?
Gorilla Grodd. Apes invade Central City, the Flash has to stop them. Can’t go wrong with that one. Never mind all the lightning-bolt origin stuff, and God help them if they try to make the Turtle his arch-enemy.
February 2nd, 2009 at 9:17 am
my dream treatment of a Flash movie would use Vandal Savage as the villain linking to a trans-generational story with (a very slow aging/aged) Jay, Barry and Wally. The origins of the Flash would be glossed over except to eventually give way to the Speed Force concept that Savage accidentally stumbled across while fighting Jay and confirmed with Barry, but was never ready to progress in stealing due to some sacrifice Barry made in some unknown circumstance. In either case, Vandal Savage wants to steal/capture the Speed Force because he is tired of living off of his genetically altered clone organs and can use the Speed Force to slow his aging in the same way that Jay Garrick isn’t aging.
of course the Rogues and Grodd would be in the movie, but they wouldn’t be the stars (Rogues make better characters with buildup like in a sequel). The reason to have as many bad guys as possible in the story is because the Flash is supposed to be able to deal with all of them at exhausting speeds.
seriously…picture it. Wally West running at breakneck speeds, riding on the debris being thrown at him in order to deal whirlwind punches at Gorilla Grodd in the first 10 minutes of a movie.
