The Thing returns

And I’m not talking about Mama Grimm’s favorite son.

Universal Studios will be producing a new film version of John Carpenter’s shapeshifting alien cult classic, Variety reports.

Battlestar Gallactica executive producer Ron Moore will be writing the film, and Army of the Dead co-developer Matthjis Van Heijningen will direct.

According to Variety, this new film will draw much of its inspiration from the John Campbell Jr. story “Who Goes There” and the Howard Hawks screen story for “The Thing From Another World”.

“The Thing From Another World” was a movie. Carpenter’s The Thing was a remake/ reimagining.

I’ve really liked Moore’s work on Star Treks TNG, DS9 (esp. DS9!!) and now on BSG… But does The Thing really, honestly, need yet another remake. I’ve seen the first two, and I’ve liked them both (then there was that X-Files homage/ripoff back in its first season… Which was also good). It might be a good movie, this new one, I just have to ask “why?”

I’d like to see Moore tackle an all-new creation, and not just play with someone else’s toys, so to speak.

The worst part of this news is that you just know that they’re going to try to “improve” upon the already-perfect effects of the Carpenter version with CGI, and that there are actually going to be idiots out there who will claim that it looks more “realistic.”

Hard to imagine that they’ll improve upon John Carpenter’s brilliant version – one of my all-time favourite films, and one that I’ve watched easily 8 or 9 times – but I’m sure they’ll try. I love the original, too, but it hasn’t stood the test of time quite as well as the remake (granted, the remake’s less than 30 years old, so who knows?). There are scenes in the Carpenter “Thing” that are absolutely mind-boggling… in a good way! And few movies, made before or since, have as much suspense in them as we experience when McCready gathers the remaining “men” in one room and begins testing them. Now that’s some fun!
