I went out and bought all the Morrison "approved" tie-ins and read the whole thing in one long sitting. It felt disjointed, and still I could barely keep the plot together when I got to FC7. While the art in Submit was disappointing, I liked how the issue slotted into the event and stretched it out a bit. It was a long action sequence that worked as a relief from the crazyass cross cutting in FC proper. I think the Superman Beyond issues totally worked in the same way. The Batman issues were disjointed, too, but I think they helped the pacing.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl died? How the heck did I miss that?

I THINK so. I'm really just going off the one panel with the two feathers in itnear the end, next to Batman's cowl and J'onn's pyramid. I guess Hawkman was just like, Well, I'm going on a suicide run now, and she was like, not without me, and then they were caught in an explosion. So maybe they're not dead, and if they are, they'll just reincarnate anyway.

But why do you think the story occurs out of continuity?

Oh, parts of it seem to and others don't. I thought the changing the title was DC kind of admitting that. I haven't reread it since it came out, but if I recall correctly, it was set as the Anti-Life Equation was about to be broadcast and the world about to end (which the heroes didn't really know about well enough to prepare for as they were shown doing throughout the book). At that point, Batman was captured by the evil gods, but he's shown there hanging out with his boys. Superman was either at Lois' bedside, or in the future, or Beyond, but he was shown hanging out with his dad. Green Lantern was arrested on Oa, and Wally was hanging with Barry, but they're seen hanging out together.

The Geo-Force plot line doesn't really contradict Final Crisis, but he blames Slade for his sister's death, not Black Adam, who actually killed her in World War III.

I actually rather enjoyed Brad Meltzer's "Last Will and Testament" one-shot, even though it was essentially a Geo-Force revenge story. I found it fascinating that Meltzer kind of delved into how the heroes of the DC Universe handle the thought of the so-called "real" end of the world. (I absolutely loved the vignette with Captain Cold.) But why do you think the story occurs out of continuity?

Yeah, I was kinda confused on the Hawks' deaths as well. (Not that they die for long periods of time, anyway.) But just as Kendra's really on her own from her origin in Johns' JSA run, Morrison offs her kind of peripherally in this issue... and even so, not very obviously so. I've had to re-read the issue multiple multiple times to try and make sense of who lived, who died, where the Fifth World gods ended up, and what the point of the Cosplay League really was... and I still can't quite make heads or tails of it.

This might just be the first time I actually appreciate the seemingly normal groundbreaking ideas he put into his JLA run.

I dragged out my entire Final Crisis set all the way back to DC Universe 0 (which I had totally forgot about until I found it in the stack next to FC1). I bought the whole shebang, but never actually read Revelations or Superman Beyond. I plan to read it all start to end in "proper Morrison order" this weekend to see if it reads better collected.

What's been done here....i.e. the past 7 to 8 months of Morisson's work will not get its full appreciation right now. But in the long run I think people will finally come to understand the boundaries he's broken in mainstream comics.
The array of mind blowing concepts and the ever super dense continuity can be seen as a hallmark. Doing all this with big time characters such as Superman and Batman together with the rest of the DC universe/multiverse could only have been done by this man.
Though I hate the whole Fourth World idea of there being "gods" metaphorical or otherwise...I must as a comic book reader applaud this guy's imagination.

You missed Rogues Revenge.

Wow, I sure did. I honestly forgot that was ever even released (Um, I didn't read that one. Obviously).

I think this should lead directly into a Morrison Brave & the Bold series set in the Stone Age

I'm definitely down for The Brave and The Bold: B.C.

When Superman beyond is collected will it have the 3-D sections or not and will it come with 3-D glasses or not?

I'm not sure how it would work in a tpb, but the last LOEG story, Black Dossier, was a hardcover with a little plastic envelope on the back jacket flap with the glasses tucked in, and that worked out nicely.

When Superman beyond is collected will it have the 3-D sections or not and will it come with 3-D glasses or not? Trying to put the glasses in a paperback seems like a nightmare to me, but I know nothing about publishing. I already have the issues, just curious if the trade waiters will be screwed in another way somehow, either by being robbed of the 3-D or given a 3-D book missing the means of reading it.

Disco Dan DiDio really ought to consider a phonebook-size Final Crisis Omnibus with Grant's "essential" chapters:
Final Crisis #1-3
Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #1-2
Final Crisis: Submit
Final Crisis #4 -5
Batman #682-683
Final Crisis #6-7
