I did NOT come up with that “Shell-ebration” bit, as it was actually in the press release. Ubisoft and Game Arts, the development team behind Super Smash Bros. Brawl, are bringing a new Turtle Power infused fighting game to the Wii this year. TMNT: Smash UP looks like it will share more than just a developer and the word “smash” in its title with its cousin, providing a similar gameplay experience in the world of the 25 year old Daredevil parody. Turtles co-creator Peter Laird is writing the single player story, which promises to be all original, “not tied in to any movie, comic, or tv show” storyline. And these are the first two screen shots. Enjoy!

Does it have to be a Wii game? No good can come of this, and it makes my inner 8 year old cry.

I always loved the Turtle games. I just hope they stick to the old school formula. 4 players getting together and kicking the sh** out of bad guys. Throw in a couple of cut scenes and what else do you need?

The Wii is the perfect place to this, the spiritual successor to “Smash Bros.” And besides, Nintendo and the Turtles have a long history together. This makes so much sense despite some of the system snobbery going around.
There’s a nice article about this in the new Nintendo Power magazine, about four pages of pics and interviews, and this is going to be one of the dark horse contenders for 2009’s Game of the Year. Mark my words.
I’m most excited about the fact that its not tied to any particular universe or incarnation (like a movie), and the guys at Mirage helped the developers pick a huge roster of TMNT characters from around the multiverse.
I’m just saying… I call dibs on Wingnut and Screwloose.
