Vendetta? No, This V is for Visitors.

Jane Badler as Diana; image from Entertainment Weekly's EW.comCan you see the new intro now?  “They came to us with the promise of friendship.  They lied.  They eat people.  And they have a plan.”  That’s right; V is slated for the re-engineering wagon by ABC.

As The Hollywood Reporter tells us . . .

The network has given a pilot order to a reimagining of the 1980s miniseries about an alien invasion . . . Written on spec by “4400″ co-creator/exec producer Scott Peters, the new “V” will center on a female Homeland Security agent . . . Two ABC pilots picked up so far this pilot season are presold titles based on 1980s properties, “The Witches of Eastwick” and “V.”  Both are being produced by Warner Bros. TV.

This could be either terrific or diabolically bad.  Though the original had its moments of brilliance (primarily in the two mini-series, V and V: The Final Battle) and its moments of cheddar (the remaining series that followed), Peters did solid work on The 4400.  It’ll be interesting to see how this one turns out.  At this point though, what science-fiction properties are going to be left to be reimagined? The Man from Atlantis?  Dear Lord, Automan?

Yep… This COULD be horrible. On the other had, it could be a great idea. Maybe it’s because I’ve finally started watching the new BSG and I’m enjoying it, but I’m willing to give this one a chance when it comes out. Besides, ABC’s going to need something when Lost (sadly) goes off the air next year. Nothing’s likely to ever top Lost, but I’ll give ABC props for trying.

  2. Corey Henson Says:

This show will be nothing without Robert Englund.

While we’re at it, how about a remake of “Voyagers!”? Or “Finder of Lost Loves”?

Curse you Brownfield for making me feel incredibly old. CURSE YOU!

I’m still holding out for a Quantum Leap revival.

I’m hoping for a WISHMAN or GEMENI MAN revival.

Or, dare I hope for a CLIFFHANGER resurrection?

  5. Daryll B Says:

Ah I always wondered who would dust this off first annnnd ABC’s done it….

What’s next, the “reimagining” of…. MANIMAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Ike Iszany Says:

At least it’s a scripted show and not “Who wants to marry an overweight millionaire rehabbing drug addict transvestite who’s stuck on an island doing a game show?’

  8. Sallyp Says:

Hey, I’m just waiting for a Manimal revival!

  9. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

A classic example of the mindset that somethat worked before, however long ago and however slight was its success, is infinitely safer than to try something new. I would MUCH rather see Alien nation back againaginagin.

If you can find a copy, seek out Keith Laumer’s “The Monitors”, the book many claim is V’s spiritual forebear. The ending is totally different, and will astound you with its left-field thinking and cool logic.

The film starring most of the cast of the Second City at the time is a kick as well.

  10. Shaun Says:

It’s a good point you make, Vinnie, but it’s also why I brought up BSG. There’s a show that was long ago, had very slight success (it only lasted one season in its original form, but several things happened that killed the show), and who the hell would’ve expected to see it reborn in the 21st century, let along be any good?

Well, maybe it’s not that surprising. Ron Moore did excellent work for Star Treks TNG and DS9 both. But I don’t think many people ever thought they’d see a new BSG. It took me a good long while to warm up to it, but I’m glad I did.
