Is the Wolverine movie in trouble?

January 16th, 2009
Author Corey Henson

Collider is reporting that extensive reshoots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine are underway in Vancouver. The article states that director Gavin Hood had a difficult time on the set the first go-around, as Fox executives undermined his authority and micromanaged the shooting. Rumor has it Richard Donner was even on set working in some capacity.

If the rumors of reshoots are true, this could be bad news for the movie. Reshoots tend to mean that the original cut of the movie is crap, and the studio in charge is scrambling to fix it. Hood is said to be at the helm of the reshoots, so hopefully he’ll get to make the movie the way he intended. And hopefully it won’t suck.

Your really think so? On the contrary, it tends to mean that the focus groups made up of Christian housewives have found something that offends them, and consequently the studio is scrambling to change whatever it was, so the movie can’t possibly be offensive to anybody. The movie then becomes acceptable to everybody – and consistently boring to discerning audiences. Hollywood is much like DC Comics – they want dependable mainstream material rather than have any of their creators do anything artistic to it.

Possibly, but considering all the other rumored problems that went on during the filming, it doesn’t sound like that’s the case.

  3. Matt M. Says:

I was gonna say, when reshoots are called for, it’s often because the movie didn’t do well in focus groups or the producers/studio saw stuff the didn’t like (and chose to exercise their muscle). Quality is often an independent factor in that.

You can’t trust anything made by Fox any more; there’s always rumors surrounding their movies that the execs are knee deep in it.

    I mean, just look at X-Men 3.

  6. Ed Says:

As bad as the original cut may have been, no changes dictated by studio suits ever result in anything other than making a movie worse. Period.

    Go away.

Aint it cool has an e-mail from Hugh Jackman regarding the reshoots…

He basically says that it’s just to fill in some shoots that they weren’t able to get the first time around do to scheduling conflicts. Again, it could be just Jackman trying to cover up.

  9. Joseph Says:

That’s quite a few conclusions drawn from unsubstantiated rumors. Doubt reshoots in this case are the result of focus groups, since no way Fox actually showed this movie to any members of the public this early. Also, reshoots on films are quite common, could be something as simple as a few “pcik-ups” like Jackman mentioned.
