I need to tell you what happen to my buddy Chuckles, who went to DC to sell Obama crap. The secret service seized his van, fined him for not having a vending permit, drove him to the DC city limits and dumped him on the side of the road. They told him if he wanted his stuff back, including his vehicle, he would have to petition the government. Some nice people from West Virginia drove him back to his hotel, where he had to call his wife to come get him. She was pissed. Live and learn.

Greetings and Salutations!

It's funny how everyone is going crazy about Barack Obama appearing in comics. First he's in the his own comic (along with McCain) then he's in Savage Dragon, then Spiderman, then Youngblood and Eric Larsen is complaining about how Marvel ripped him off by having Obama in Spiderman after Dragon had him in his. I think it's all pretty funny and I'm not sure what the fuss is all about because to me its just old news. If you live in St. Louis and/or happened to have attended the Wizard World Chicago Con this past summer , then you might know the real deal: they're all wrong about President Elect Obama's first comic appearance.

I just wanted to drop you a line informing you that I had the first official unofficial comic about Obama called Barack Obama: Agent of C.H.A.N.G.E. It was a 5 page mini comic that served as the flip side to my Parade of Freaks Wizard World Chicago Special that came out at the end of May. The illustration first appeared in the St. Louis Arts and Entertainment website Playbacks:STL in January: http://www.playbackstl.com/content/view/7162/269/ (obviously someone loves him some Steranko). Then the actual comic appeared on my website Parade of Freaks. You can see it here for free: http://www.paradeoffreaks.com/2008/06/02/agent-of-change-page-1/ or buy it from Indy Planet for $1.99 at http://www.indyplanet.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1089 .

I know this may seem like some shameless promotion by a no name, wannabe comic creator (and it is) but also it's about giving a nod to the Indie world for once again setting the trend that the mainstream follows and claims as their own. And actually I'm not a complete no name because I've had stuff published in national magazines before (Two Drink Minimum and Playback:STL who then both went under although Playback went web only) as well as being a December 2007 Contestant on Zuda Comics.

So anyways, I guess now you know.

Cheers,

All kidding aside, my college roomate called and wanted to know if I wanted to call off work and "take a bunch of ASM 583's down to DC on Tuesday, to sell at $20 a pop, in a van down by the mall." I told him, "Good luck Chuckles. I hope the secret service is nice to you."

I heard that when Kevin Smith needs gas money he signs a few copies of Green Arrow and puts them on Ebay. Same with Emmitt Smith. He wonders down to Walmart in Dallas, buys a couple footballs, signs them and auctions them off. Ain't America great? Plus, I think they're related! Those crazy Smith boys.

PhoenixPhan the price is not the issue, everyone please sell it for what ever price you want, but at least be honest and don't say it's something that its not! I'll buy the regular cover or the variant cover at the going rate as long as its the cover its supposed to be, but when someone tries to cheat you by saying its the variant cover and its not that's just wrong! I hope you understand the situation, not price, bait & switch, false advertising, and he knew what he was doing because for who ever bought it and did not come back to return it, he made his money and more on one single copy sold, sneaky guy, be careful is all I'm saying, buyer beware!

I find it funny that it's ok for customers to sell their copies on eBay for crazy prices, but retailers can't in their own store. Either everybody's a jackass, or no one is folks.

Hey, that jack-ass at squareone did the same thing to me he tried to sell me the regular cover of ASM 583 as the Obama variant cover for $125.00. I yelled Obama's not even on the cover, it ain't the cover! This isn't right, how can someone do this, especially to people who are only buying the book for their kids or grandkids, what can be done about this?

Does anyone else think the "story" here isn't the Obama appearance in Amazing Spider-Man, but rather the absolute greed by Marvel for upping this to $3.99 and store owners for selling the Obama cover variant for $25 -- $50 -- $100??? They should be ashamed of themselves for doing this in THIS economy. Bastards.

Final Crisis 6 (J.G. Jones cover) fetched me 7 bucks on Ebay. 7 bucks will cover my library fees but it won't cover the rent! I just hope the Daily Bugle will buy my photos of Spidey and Barrack Obama and I have to remember to pick up Aunt May's medicine. Oh no! My Spider Sense is tingling. No wait... it's just my cell phone, it's set on vibrate!

My copy of Amazing Spider-Man #583 (the variant cover)just sold on Ebay for $42.75! I'd like to thank Mr.Obama for putting some extra cash in my wallet. Keep up the good work Barrack, the country's economy will be turned around in no time. Now if I can only get that kind of scratch for Final Crisis #6 where Batman dies. Here's hoping!

A store in mississauga was scamming people by telling us he had the ASM 583 Obama variant cover First printing and was selling it for $50.00 bucks plus tax, when you get there he pulls out the regular cover with Peter Parker and the girls on the cover and says here it is that will be $50 bucks, when I pulled him aside to tell him that your not fooling anyone here that's the regular cover which is available everywhere for cover price, he told me that I was wrong and I should look into it, I then told him I did and that's why I can tell him what the cover looks like what the cut off date was to qualify for it was and what the 2nd print looks like, he shut up quickly, and said I understand if you don't want it, I said that's not the point you are telling people that this is the Obama variant cover first printing and it's not, Its called the Obama Variant cover because Obama is on the cover which you can see he is not on this cover, he blurts out well this is the only cover I got, I said good for you, but don't tell people that its something that its not, you can expect people coming back for their money or you will be seeing a number of civil lawsuits coming your way, I said good luck and walked out.

The 3rd store is called 'Jelly's' and they had a computer print out advertising the Obama cover. Then they only put out the regular cover instead of the Obama cover and then they said that that is the only cover that they had. It was just frustrating how many comic shops resorted to lying, false advertising, and resorting to cynical tactics just to gain a buck. This happened all in Hawaii folks.

My shop was 'sposed to get 3 and didn't get any.

Yay for the Spider-Man fan loyal customer who didn't get something that even during flagging sales they've continued to buy.

By the way, there were no lines of people standing in line to get an ASM 583 comic. You would think that due to the long lines across the nation and also the fact that Hawaii is Obama's home state where he came from that there would be droves of people lining up for the comic. There was none. Only a handful of people that numbered to below 6 in both stores combined (Collector Maniacs and Gecko Books). This is probably due to the local people knowing how these 2 comic shops are and how they are run. Collector Maniacs and Gecko Books have a history of hiding new comics that are perceived as 'hot' and selling them for a premium instead of selling them for cover price. Perhaps this is the reason that many people shied away from buying comics from them altogether.

Almost every single time I went to 'Gecko Books' for comics I seem to be the ONLY customer in there and I'm not exaggerating. Why did so many people ditch these stores? Poor Customer Service. The people know better than to deal with cynical comic shop owners. I was a little late in finding that out.

Here in Hawaii where Barack Obama was born and raised, I went to 3 comic stores to try to get the variant cover. I called 1 store a few days ahead of time and the store owner said that he doesn't know when it will sell out of his store but he is not taking reserves for the Obama comic. So I thought that everyone has a fair chance at getting an Obama cover since he is not taking any reserves on it. When I went to his store when he OPENED, he lied to me and said that he sold out of all of his Barack Obama variant cover comics and that he only has the regular cover. He basically lied to me when I called ahead of time. I KNOW that the store owner is holding the variant Obama covers and is selling them elsewhere for a premium because I remember he tried to sell the WildC.A.T.s premium covers for $40 each the week that they came out. The problem is that the Obama variant is not a premium comic--comic shops could order as much as they want as long as they order more copies of the regular edition than ASM 575.
I went to the other store and they also had sold out of the Obama covers AND also the regular editions. They also said that they were only taking orders for the second printing. How could you sell out of ALL of the covers including the regular editions BEFORE they opened. That's BS. They're just holding onto them and selling them for a premium on eBay even though they bought all of their ASM 583 comics at a heavy discount. By the way, the 2 stores are 'Collector Maniacs' and 'Gecko Books'. Both comic shop owners are liars and full of sh!t.

To the greedy comic book store owner in the Chicago suburbs who kept all copies behind the counter and was selling them for $35 each only an hour and a half after the store opened: I hope that your short term gain was worth it to you. I have been shopping at your store for YEARS helping you make your hefty rent payment every month in a struggling economy. The fact that you wouldn't sell a copy of that book to me at its already inflated cover price of $3.99 was absolutely apalling to me. You can keep your crap comic and your bad attitude. Your insatiable greed and lack of understanding of the concept of customer loyalty has cost you a heavy price: my continued patronage. I will celebrate the day when you go out of business you greedy bastich. And Marvel, shame on you for creating this supply/demand problem in the first place. You should consider your loyal customers as priority when concocting a racketeering scheme like this. You won't make it through this recession unscathed, mark my words.

This does remind me of the 80s. Special books would come out and everyone would flock to get their hands on them, often buying multiple copies because they were going to be valuable someday. Of course, the fact that the market was so flooded with them caused an opposite effect and today you can't get more than cover price for many of those books.

I'm not sure why people are equating this with the go-go early 90's foil-hologram-platinum-variant craze. It may be a gimmick cover stunt, but there are plenty of copies with the normal cover available. They're doing a second printing next week, with the Obama cover. It's not that big a deal.

This comic is indicative to me of everything that is wrong with the media at large (both print and video), and the fact that there is a sycophantic reaction from the public towards this guy. I sometimes feel like I am the only soul out here who will not jump on the "Obama will change everything!" bandwagon. It isn't called the first 100 days for no good reason. I want to think that the guy will make things happen, but the expectations for his presidency are so high, that the inevitable come down will be a bit too much for a lot of folks.

Turning him into a quick buck is just bad form. I always hated these types of books.
